Granted he still goes with what he has in his head, but I'm sure we've all been to the point where the metal is just telling you what it wants to be. At that point you make the decision to either listen to the metal, or do what you want. Thanks for the video.

I've had very lil experience with a friends home made forced air forge and my best memory is the night I put a quarter in the forge and heated the coin to the point where it looked as if it was a molten oval orb of glowing metal , kinda like a bead of water but upon cooling it SNAPPED BACK into a coin. Now this could be some hallucination from many yrs of drugs but my scientists mind tells me that the stamp left memory that kept the untouched molten metal a coin . corny ? Must be blessed, for all I do is free style forging as you would describe. Finish all of them. Don't draw, as many great blacksmiths and bladesmiths have asked that are great seems to be split in agreement. The ones that draw think that is the only way, if you don't the outcome would be better if drawn out to finished product. Being an artist can be just bringing an idea to completion regardless of course taken.

@Kevin I work in a steel mill and make structural I-beams. I have a pretty good working knowledge of metallurgy and mechanical properties and you are absolutely correct. I understand, all things being equal, having an exact known part of an equation is ideal, but some really great blades have been made throughout history without the benefit of the modern technology we have at our fingertips. My initial question is based on the fact I'm a pretty new maker and have acess to a bunch of really good materials that I know will make good blades. On a couple of different pages I've been told how stupid it is to use something like a roller bearing (which I can get for free) because new steel is just so cheap. I disagreed.

You're probably tired of hearing (reading) this, but it would have been cool to see your personality, from the dozen or so videos you put out after discovering you like two days ago, on FIF. There's some comedy, but yours is a flavor the show could have used. In any event, my entire blacksmithing shop was destroyed by a flood about 12 years ago. All the tongs and tools I made, gone. Thousands in equipment, deleted and absorbed into a riverbed. I found one of my cheap anvils sticking out of the mud and a couple chunks of rough forged steel. Maybe 4 or 5 years later, I got back into smithing using a fire pit, hedge and cedar wood, a kayak inflator pump connected to a pipe with a bunch of holes drilled and worked fine until I moved. I have this hypothesis that I can fast forge a chopper out of this chunk of spring steel without a blower for heat treating. I use hedge and cedar for the bottom fire and build another fire on top with maybe an 8 inch gap to draw heat from the lower fire into a frenzy. I'd normalize a couple few times after straightening and hammering in bevels first. I'm in Southern Illinois, we have a crap ton (a lot) of blacksmiths around these parts. I came here for grad school and stayed for a gig in prop making and stage direction. I need to learn how to be precise and not use backstories or whatever.
