I Adopted A Cat! 🐾 First Day Vlog + Supplies Haul

After literally two decades of wanting to adopt a cat - and being grounded at home for the foreseeable future - I finally decided to make that dream a reality! After many months of preparation and searching for the right feline forever friend, I finally found her; meet Bonnie! She's a black, 7-year old adult cat and is an absolute darling. I already love her so much 😭💕
I wanted to vlog our first day with her, because I was SO NERVOUS (but also super excited, of course!) about adopting a cat and in the lead up to her adoption, I spent many, many hours getting everything ready at home and doing a tonne of research, including watching countless cat-owner advice / adoption videos to prepare myself. But a lot of them were very brief or didn't show a personal experience of what to expect - so I hope that if you're looking to adopt your own fluffy companion (they're the best, and you'd be the best for doing so too ❤️), that this video helps you out!

So great that you chose an older cat, and a black cat. Sadly those are often "the least adoptable". As a long time expat (mostly in Korea over the last 23+ years), I lived catless for almost two decades. When I decided that I could afford them, commit, pay for cat sitters when I travel. . . and basically give myself and some cats a better life (or just a life at all), I looked for an older bonded pair. I got 4 1/2 year old Korean black and white shorthairs. They'd been together since birth, and honestly, I think if they were separated or left on their own they would not have done well. Now they are 8, fat, and happy. We also have a 3rd cat-- another black and white about the same age. He was a street kitty I fed and then he got sick and chased me down . . . and the next day when I went back for him, he came home. He has been an expensive kitty, but seeing him thrive over the last years has been priceless. My 3 black and whites have given live to my apt and now with COVID they have been awesome therapy cats.

Me to but this the hack for you i do it and my parents buy a kitten for me. So 1.always create a name for a pet and wrote it on clear paper 2.left the paper at the table and wait for your parents see the paper 3.gave the paper to them and choose the name 4.bagging to parents and cry at in front of them 5.your parent going to buy it for you😊 That the hack so if this not helping so im sorry😓😢 So good luck @Rino

I tell you what works ahaha (this is what worked with my dad although he had never said no) 1. Ask your parents and state that you will look after her. You’ll feed it, clean up after it, play with it, be responsible for it ruining shit. 2. Tell them that you will need help paying for vet bills and supplies (if you’re not old enough to get a job yet) but you will take it on once you are able to.

Cat collar tip: You will likely find you want a bright collar that's easy to see, in case your cat gets out. If she's very prone to getting out, a reflective or glow-in-the-dark collar is a good idea. 2 tags (so you always have a spare at home while the cat wears the first one) with the cat's name, your name, and some contact info (what you're comfortable with being public for her to wear around). These can be cheap mail-order via pet stores or Amazon. -- Cats typically groom (lick and scratch) all over, including their collar, so you'll want to replace it periodically or toss it in the washer before then. So you can try a few collars and find what you like. -- They can really vary in quality, but. you can get good ones for cheap, with colors and patterns you'll like for your cat. :)

I’m also in Melbourne and adopted a 5 yo black cat from the Cat Protection Society. Best decision ever. A couple of months later I was diagnosed with cancer. Mastectomy, chemo, radiotherapy then along came covid and I’ve been in iso. I don ‘t know what I would have done without my Nina. Kittens are fun and very cute but an adult cat can provide a different kind of companionship. Please consider an older cat when you adopt.

Now the real work begins. Cats are great. Dogs are great. They take a whole lot of love and understanding, because they don't always behave the way we think they will. They sometimes misbehave, and we and they can read each other well or misread each other badly. -- She looks like a wonderful kitty and a good cat can be a joyful and/or calm lifelong companion. -- Currently have one who's 14.5 and one who's now 0.5 a year old. :) -- Having a senior kitty is that other big thing we have to deal with. Eventually, we likely find another cat, or a cat finds us. :)

Sarah G thank you so much! 🥰 I couldn’t have been luckier with her, she’s everything I’d hoped for and more! They didn’t have much info on her at all, she’d actually spent about a month and a half at another shelter before moving to this one, and that first shelter did all of her desexing, microchipping and vaccines! She seems like she came from a loving home, but based on her medical history, she might have been a stray as it’s unusual for her to be 7 years old without having any of those things done before.

Awwww adorable. My own shorthair black cat, Stiles, was so energetic right from the get go after getting home. Explored the bathroom then requested to explore other rooms. My other fluffy black cat, Onew, we got at the same time spent hours under the bed, then under a table before plopping next to me and Stiles one random hour at night. Omg, i just got one of those scratching toy combo things. Onew loves it. Stiles likes to sit on it.

A big thank you for letting us see your cat resting because that shows your cat is very happy. Reminds me of when I adopted my last cat because he cried all the way home then after I let him out I found out he climbed back into his carrier as if he wanted to go back home. He would only sleep in the living room so if I wanted to sleep with him I had to go into the living room too. But after a few days of that I carried him upstairs and he has been going upstairs on his own since then.

I’m from Melbourne too! I’m getting a cat tomorrow from Caroline Springs through the RSPCA! She’s 11 months, has had kittens and was surrendered when she had them because the owners couldn’t look after her and the kittens. She’s still a kitten herself!! And once she settles in, and I have had her a little while, they suggested getting another cat but a male so I guess I’m getting kitten in less than a year too! I’m very excited.

For some reason, people don't like to adopt a black cat. She is so pretty. Congrats. Adopting an adult cat is the best! They are trained and know how to adapt to new environments. Adult kitties can be so friendly. All of my cats were adopted as adults and I can't imagine what life would be without them.

She came with us on a 3-day trip last December and she was great! But yes, we’ll likely get friends or family to look after her if we go away longer than that / interstate / overseas (lol one day 🙃).
