They're all incredibly knowledgable... but only when it comes to a narrow time frame. Overall, I'd ballpark it as the last 20 years. This comes up in the comment threads all of the time, how crazy it is that they can name a random player's OPS+ from 2019 but then have never heard of Rogers Hornsby or someone on that level. And I can never criticize because I'm the total opposite. I can recall with strange detail the lineup for, say, the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers or tell you precisely the top five MLB stolen base leaders in 1980. Yet I couldn't guess within 100 either way what Spencer Strider's career strikeout total is or even what Luis Arraez' batting average was last year.

It’a also a shame that nobody knew anything *about* Ty Cobb. I get that he’s not super relevant to much of modern MLB, but he’s a 150 WAR player with the highest career batting average of all time. Makes me want a Ref Guess of inner-circle Hall of Famers who retired before the Divisional Era…just as a means of assessing which Jomboy regulars could use a remedial viewing of the Ken Burns docuseries. Wagner wouldn't have been a correct pick though. The player with the lowest ERA wins! Just an idea, keep up the great work!

This particular game is why it probably pays to know the old-timers, as they were far more likely to stick with a single team. For every Derek Jeter in the last few decades, there are people like Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Honus Wagner, et al who played their entire careers in one place. In fact, there is a great book called Hometown Heroes that features profiles on all of the players who lasted 10+ years (or something like that) with only one MLB team. The author, Clay Sigg, was a real estate guy in Sacramento but was a huge baseball fan in his free time. As I understand it, he went around and interviewed the living members of his list, which had to be the coolest project ever for a seamhead.

The Jose Canseco A's answer was bad answer but looking at it not nearly as bad as it seemed initially- while the A's are a historical franchise with lots of legendary players they've always had a thing about getting rid of their best players early due to finances (I guess that is how you move three times). While guys like Al Simmons and Rickey Henderson would both be much better choices for A's outfielders they are still much further down the list than you would think for, again, a historical franchise for the A's.
