An interesting episode would be each contestant choosing one player (homers and/or hits) for each decade starting in the 1930’s through the 2010’s. For example, Jake, Shelfy, Jolly each select one player in the 1930’s, then one player in the 1940’s, then one player in the 1950’s and so on filling up the positions in the lineup!
@dwightsutter
@dwightsutter 8 ай бұрын
The best possible lineup that was provided at the end can be improved if Michael Young is moved to DH and you use 02 Miguel Tejada at Shortstop. Michael Young primary DH'd in 2011 for 213 hits so it is better even if you don't use that spot as like a free space.

They literally brought his name up and discussed where he was eligible at, only to have Shelfy fill his last OF spot with Chas McCormick (after stupidly taking Mickey Moniak earlier). It's almost as though he doesn't care about trying to put together the best team. Meanwhile, Jake's over here pulling out Michael Young's career year.

True, but it at least proves that they're not cheating and researching ahead of time. Unless you have memorized that Ichiro set the record in '04, it's a good assumption that the guy that won ROTY and MVP while leading off for a 116-win team had a pretty good season that year.

A bit of a deep cut, but one of my favorites growing up was Juan Gonzalez (OF, Texas Rangers). In his second MVP season (1998), he had a career high 193 hits (and also mashed 45 homers to go with 157 RBI). Not the most prolific hitter, but he was a masher before he moved to Detroit into the canyon called Comerica. He had a bounce back year in 2001 with Cleveland, but injuries (mostly his back) meant he was never near the same after that. (edited to clarify his back injuries really became a problem after his year with Cleveland.)

Ohtani isn't a contact hitter, and before the Ohtani rule he couldn't hit after exiting the game as a pitcher. This year he finished with 197 hits, but prior to this his best season was only 160. That's still good enough to be #1 DH or at least top 3 in most seasons, but there are def better options.

Was there a rule limiting AL West players to the three-division era? Because I would have grabbed some of the stud contact hitters from teams that were in the previous version of the AL West. Immediately, it's Twins-era Carew when he was still a 2B, George Brett for almost any year in the 70s, plus 80s Kirby Puckett was a beast. I'm not sure if it's the No. 1 shortstop pick but I'm immediately going for 1982 Robin Yount, since he pretty much had all of his career highs in that one WS season. Then on top of that, Paul Molitor and Cecil Cooper from that same team both had 200-hit seasons. (Seriously, Jolly, have a look at the '82 "Harvey Wallbanger" Brewers. It's a weird-ass team with a scary batting lineup that had to overcome one of the weaker pitching rotations ever to win a pennant. They hit more than 200 home runs in an era when 150 often put you among the best HR teams.)
