Yeah, while its obviously kind of wierd/depressing/horrifying/ that billionaires are spending entire GDP's of small countries on a guy who is really really good at a game. He's totally right. It's the same reason they all give money to get their names on colleges and hospitals (while ironically, at the same time, often donating to politicians who want to cut funding to both, at the same time). They have gross amounts of money & often just use it to be remembered. This is definitely on the fun side of what billionaires can do to be remembered (like at least he's not buying twitter to destroy it from the inside lmao). So go off, cohen, I guess. I get Trev's point about superstars getting paid, but something doesn't feel right about Soto passing Ohtani. For what Ohtani is, he should own, in perpetuity, the record contract for a ballplayer. Soto is a generational talent as far as hitting is concerned, but he isn't the literal GOAT and all of a sudden, he owns the record. It's just kind of silly. I also worry about what it begins to mean for the fans of certain teams when these business owners realize that prices and such need to start climbing even higher just to go to the ballpark as a whole. It ain't exactly a cheap outing already. 🤷♂️

@lauracoover37383 күн бұрын
Exactly. When he bought the Mets, Cohen said he didn't do it to treat as a business but as a service to the fans & the city. Unlike Hal S, he doesn't need the team to generate money. In fact, he's losing plenty by investing in the organizational infrastructure, tech, the land redevelopment, etc. But when it all turns around at some point, he knows that will pay off in revenue too. Meanwhile the team's value is rising along with our confidence that winning a chip is near.

AAV-wise, I think it still doesn't quite reach what football (soccer) players like Messi and Ronaldo were getting at Barca and Madrid. I know Messi's AAV in his last Barca contract was somewhere north of $100m a year. Baseball contracts are also structured differently. Football contracts for big-name players typically come with release clauses (I know Yamal's is something ridiculous like €1bn) which impact the "true" value of the contract and player. $800m total is still ridiculous, generational hitter or not. Imagine paying a guy $50m a year to learn how to field a damn ball properly. What kind of ROI are the Mets even looking at in terms of revenue he'd bring in?

I’m a Mets fan, and _I’m_ stunned. I did not think that the Yankees would let Soto get away, especially not to the Mets. And I have to say, he DID look at home in the Bronx. Seems as if he likes what he sees with the Mets more than the Yankees. It does say something that they took the Dodgers to Game 6 of the NLCS in a year that they weren’t going all-in (the payroll argument is disingenuous because of all the dead money, and you know it). Of course, $765mm/15 is absurd, but as long as it doesn’t prevent the Mets from doing other things, it’s fine. Now go bully the White Sox into handing over Garrett Crochet. 😈 25:45 There’s no reason to extend Vientos in the immediate future, Soto or not. I suspect that he just had the best season he’s ever going for to have (on a rate basis), as his underlying metrics scream regression. He’s only a year younger than Soto, but his below-average plate skills and contact ability make him less likely to age well.

14:15 Yankees fans ARE stunned and upset, but as would be the case with any fan base in such a situation, there’s some denial. It’s natural, and completely understandable. Their emotions are manifesting as sour grapes (whinemaking, if you will), i.e. “Soto’s not worth it,” “he’s selfish,” “his contract is going to age horribly,” “he’s a DH,” “he cares about money more than winning,” “he’s not Shohei,” “LOLMets are still losers,” etc., and trading barbs with jubilant, occasionally self-satisfied Mets fans about “RINgzz!!1!” It’s not unlike how many Nats fans reacted in 2022, when Washington traded Soto after he rejected their extension offer. It’s only natural. And not for nothing-and I say this as a Mets fan-would it actually be all that surprising if the Yankees won the World Series in 2025? We saw something similar happen a few years ago, after the free agent departure of another 26-year-old generational talent (and Juan Soto was center stage). One never knows. 🤷🏽♂️

Mets have to win at least 10 more Word Series to even be in the conversation with the Yankees. I don't wish Soto anything bad, but if he gets hurt the Mets are screwed for the next 15 years.

Crazy Soto is taking the pay cut to go to the Mets. 760 over 14 years is 54 mill per year. 765 over 15 years is 51 a year. Would he be worth another 50 million by the time that 14 years is over? Maybe not, but if he's still decent he could get that 5 million to make the difference in the contracts. Just lured him in with the bigger number when it's not even the better deal.

if he has an opt-out in 5 years, this is NOT a 15-year contract. It is a 5-year one.

I think Soto preferred teaming up with Francisco Lindor and the youth movement of the Mets
