One of the most unique and sobering songs I've ever heard. It has meant a lot to several friends who were in the "Service" back then. Mark is famous for playing a Fender Stratocaster, but makes that Gibson Les Paul cry beautifully in this song. Nice choice.

Played at many UK service and ex service personnel funerals. I've got it booked in for mine when the time comes. Mark wrote this from the perspective of a dying soldier surrounded by his mates on the battlefield, in the'82 Falklands war. The live version at the Mandela birthday concert with Eric Clapton, was a masterclass.

Such a haunting song that has become an adopted anthem for service men and women, written at the time of the Falklands War between Argentina and Britain, the back story for this is of a soldier laying dying on the battlefield, surrounded by his comrades who will not leave him, the moral being you never leave anyone behind, you bring them home, may I suggest you check out the version of this by the Band's of the HM Royal Marines, it is so moving being played and sung by the military, thank you to all ex and current personnel for their service 🇬🇧

I recall living in London whilst at Uni in the early eighties listening to news about the Falklands war . Listening to Dire Straits was de rigeur for us Brits back then and they were magical then and are still. We definitely had the best bands back then !

The lyrics are from the voice of a solider who is dying in the Falkland war so he will not live to return to his valley in England. There are so many worlds, but we have just one but we live in different worlds...we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms 😢❤

I just read that this song was done at a concert for Nelson Mandela’s seventieth birthday. It was so popular in South Africa that the powers that be asked who should get the royalties. When Mark said “Amnesty International” they were banned from performing in that country. I believe South Africa has improved somewhat since about their racism problem.

This short version has the benefit of the video but I'd recommend that you a live version of this song. Many may disagree with me but, for me at least, the "On The Night, 1993" video is the best.

Just one criticism of the way Knopfler skips/trips out the word "brothers" far too quickly. That key lyric/title word is surely screaming to be delivered slowly - softly drawled out - not delivered quickly tripping off the tongue pop-music-style the way Knopfler does. It just doesn't fit the very sombre mood or vibe. I wonder if he changed that in any later older-wiser live versions. Paul G
