🌟 Thanks for tuning in, everyone! It's clear this video strikes a chord with so many of us on a profound level. Mark Knopfler's brilliance, along with the incredible talent of the band, is undeniable. I usually don't revisit my own videos once they're up, but upon watching this reaction again, I noticed something intriguing. Can you all help me out with this? Around the 10:30 mark, did it seem like MK was getting emotional, maybe even shedding a tear? That part of the song really resonated with me personally, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. 🎸✨

0:40 I see that you reacted to the album version of Tunnel of Love already, but the live version is magical (Wembley 85), Mark exhibits that vulnerability, and it oozes from his guitar in the final solo. The song is more autobiographical, thus personal. Would love to see you react to this. Thanks again. 🤟😃

A couple of other things to say: Mark's Father came to some of the shows and maybe he caught a glimpse of his Dad in the audience? Secondly, the whole song in some ways resonates with the fact that during the late 70s Margaret Thatcher's UK government oversaw a great deal of industrial decline in the North East of England where Mark grew up, with many key industries closing down, leaving those areas with high unemployment, rising crime rates etc. The story of industrial rise and decline, although not initially written about England, certainly resonates poignantly with the challenges that Marks part of the UK had in the 70s and 80s

Absolutely, MK's genius as a composer shines brilliantly in "Telegraph Road." His ability to craft intricate melodies and captivating arrangements is truly remarkable. It's one of the many reasons why this song is considered a masterpiece.

What’s great about the Alchemy concert is that everyone in the band has their moments to shine. Keys/piano is such an integral part of Telegraph Road, whether studio or live, and Alan Clark is masterful here. As for MK, well he stands out in any performance, even ones where he’s in the background. Telegraph Road is a masterpiece in songwriting, it evokes so much emotion.
@RideAcrossTheRiver10 ай бұрын
It's sad how Alan's abilities didn't get used on studio albums after _Love Over Gold._ Knopfler ended his Springsteen phase by the mid-80s, so Clark's talent was relegated to live shows.
@CuzKatieSaysSo10 ай бұрын
I love Telegraph Road, but the one thing that I still find annoying, is how loud the crowd was, to the point of being disrespectful. During those quiet moments, where every single note should be alighting on your soul, some yahoo is whistling and hooting. They can't hear the music themselves, and they're ruining it for their neighbors. Can you imagine someone doing that during a symphony? There is a time to let the band know you love them, and a time to keep one's mouth shut. Such great lyrics, great story, to Telegraph Road, but this is one time I wish the sound engineers could have cut out the crowd noise. Sorry for the rant. I've been wanting to get that off my chest for a long time. 🕊
@RideAcrossTheRiver10 ай бұрын
@@CuzKatieSaysSo The band clearly enjoyed the crowd's enthusiasm.
@CuzKatieSaysSo10 ай бұрын
Oh, there's no question, a band always enjoys crowd feedback, they feed on it. The band/crowd chemistry at Grateful Dead concerts was part of what made their concerts so magical. But there's a time to let the music alight in your soul, sink down deep, your ears take in sound and if your mouth is open it's just because you're standing there with your mouth hanging open and you just Listen. 😊 And this almost painfully sweet piana solo was one of those times. And during that quiet section, would You have liked it to have some guy start whistling or yelling right in your ear? I've had that at concerts and it's not pleasant. Let's face it, it's rude. And a man's whistle can be loud enough to just about to pierce your brain. Well that's not true, some women can whistle at head splitting levels also. As I said, there's a time and a place. I've been to plenty of symphony performances where you can hear a pin drop, when they are done, the audience brings the roof down. I've done plenty of showing my "enthusiasm " at concerts too. When it's appropriate. Just my humble opinion.

I grew up outside Detroit in the late 70s and early 80s, and this song describes its history so well. From building nothing into widespread economic prosperity, and then free falling into depression, desperation and unemployment. But even then there is hope. This is due to the fact that you’re a musician, a fellow Canadian, and most of all because of your raw, emotional reaction to the performance and to the song’s story. It’s so refreshing to see people become vulnerable enough to share their feelings and like you did as I had tears throughout the video as well. This is hands down my favourite Dire Straits live performance and is perhaps the best I’ve ever seen in my many years of experiencing live music. Because of your approach and the fact that you have a graded list (which I wholeheartedly agree with), I subscribed to your channel and will continue to support you as your move forward. Ps. I have an unapologetic man crush on Mark Knopfler as well for the same reasons. I’m also drawn to drummers and Terry Williams slid into my top 5 list of favourites (with Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews Band in the top spot). In many ways I think of it as Alan Clark's song, his keyboard/piano is outstanding! What a tight band they were, he mashes the keys and Terry Williams is on it with the cymbals and drums. I'm glad you noticed Hal Lindes on the guitar, just going straight through the thing, amazing. How John Illsley can jump around for over two hours and still play the bass is also amazing to me. We knew Mark was good, not that good, how does he do it? (As it turns out, this was the last song, the encore was Solid Rock. Absolute gem of a song, I adore this performance, as I do the whole concert. What interests me about Telegraph Road is that it was developed by the band during sound checks whilst touring for the Making Movies album. There are DS concert bootlegs from 1981 on KZbin which show they actually had it in their set list, in a similar spot, before it was recorded on the Love Over Gold album the following year. Says much about the bravery, and confidence of Mark and the band that not only did they play an unreleased song as an encore, but an epic song like this one. Now it was definitely an early draft and probably in need of some refinement, but the quality was there, not to mention Pick Withers was superb on the drums. Great reaction.

I've loved Dire Straits since I first started listening to them in the late 80s. This version is probably my favorite DS performance/song (I'm also very weak for Tunnel Of Love - the live version from Wembley 85) Fantastic review and I particularly like how you explained the background for the lyrics. Being Norwegian I've not read the Knut Hamsun book, which I probably should... Your pronunciation was perfect (supposed to pronounce the K-N sound like you did, unlike for instance Knife where the K is skipped)

'Alchemy' is one of those albums that you need to listen to with good headphones, many times over, and focus on listening to one particular instrument at a time. Lyrically this is the most poetic of all Dire Straits' tracks. Brothers in Arms is close, but the poetry together with the passion of its delivery makes this stand out. Other great guitarists were as technically able as Knopfler. They could play music and accompany songs, but for me no one can make the instrument cry, sing and move like him.

The back story as I have it- The story was based on a novel by Knut Hamsun, and follows a man who decides to settle in the wilderness, wants to live a simple life, but everyone arrives and stays, and the road gets wider, and longer. The traveller hates this, as he just wants to live a simple life…. The road in question is Telegraph Road, (US 24) a stretch of pavement spanning almost 80 miles from Toledo, Ohio, to Detroit, Michigan. It was little more than a modest dirt path since it was beaten in the mid-19th century, growing and widening as it became the backbone for infrastructure such as telegraph poles and roadways as the decades rolled onward. In the 1910s, it exploded in usage with the booming auto industry in Detroit, and towns grew off of it as people sought to capitalize on this influx of wealth into the region. But at this point, the story grows achingly familiar. The communities dependent on the road still bear the deep scars of the exodus of the automobile industry. The road has become the scar of progress that the community now bears. Its history is a drama played over a century.

Yes, just like a team sport, when relaxation sets in, it’s like a ‘group telepathy’. It’s an addictive feeling. It’s really tough to reach those levels, completely. I can empathize with your emotions, cause for me, like many others having watched that and other videos of theirs a million times, I keep being stunned, often with tears welling up. I have no idea what MK is doing with the guitar that pulls my heartstrings, and I am quite sure if you asked him he wouldn't now either why he and his band had and still have such an effect on people. I don't agree with you that the mood was more sombre and sad. And even if it is not easy to equate Mark's singing voice with a happy go lucky character he manages to simply and endearingly narrate a story with all its ups and downs, even if in the end we are left a bit desolate because of the arc from the building of the town and everybody working to the closing of the mines and shops and people being out of work. But you have to admit his way of telling stores is just unparalleled. Also, his voice and the guitar to me are different ways of doing that with the latter often sounding rather glorious. Next I would recommend Tunnel of Love from the Alchemy Tour, but I guess any live version will do. Or you could venture in the more slower vein of their songs with Private Investigations, You and your friends, Where do you think you are going (Rockpalast), the list goes on. Those versions can be found in concerts like Alchemy, from 1985 or 1988 (Mandela tribute with a sublime Brothers in Arms) in London, or "On the Night" in 1993 or on the other side of the world in Sydney. Some gentle soul has used AI to digitalize and improve several of their concerts. Well worth a watch. In the end listening to Dire Straits has always given me pause to reflect on my own life for in a way Mark and his companions are describing as much their experiences growing up and in life at large as they are describing mine.

And you're absolutely right about the range of emotions in "Telegraph Road"-from the highs of building a town to the lows of economic decline, it's a journey that mirrors the complexities of life itself. I appreciate your recommendations for other live performances; they sound like essential viewing for any Dire Straits fan. Their music truly has a timeless quality that continues to touch hearts and minds around the world.

@@llarose I think DS gave me two very important things: One, they expressed musically what was my adolescence. That was especially true with a song like Tunnel of Love (where Mark describes his youth and romantic experiences in and around Whitley Bay in Newcastle with the "Spanish City" which basically was a large fairground). I grew up in a small rural town with 1200 people and we had the county fair doing the rounds in summer, just some bumper cars, a merry-go-round, a shooting gallery and some stands with sweets and toys. But of course it played a big part in our coming of age and meeting girls (at the time for us boys that was the overall consensus, no gender conflict on the horizon) vying for their attention, trying to beating our buddies to the cutest one;) The second one and that is probaly true now more than back then, they leave you with this bombastic experience of musicianship and thanks to the Internet Age you can now also appreciate the great part that all the band members played in their success. So without the piano, the drums, bass and so on these performances couldn't have been that epic. Of course, Mark stands out with his guitar and again, I have no clue what he does and how he does it that made me felt seen and understood as a teenager and still so as a guy approaching the latter stages of his life. Maybe I appreciate it so much cause art and music in particular is not used in that way any more. The success of artists like Taylor Swift I cannot comprehend as it seems to revolve more around personal adulation than musicianship or storytelling. I have stopped listening to new music years ago, probably mostly cause it is not meant for me and my age group or I am too set in my ways. But artists and bands like DS (notably Meat Loaf among them) have defined an important part of my life and I suppose will be remain with me until my last day. I suppose you are from an age group that was born probably in the 80s and had not direct link to DS as I never did with the Stones or the Beatles (in fact to me those two might as well not exist), but I am extremely glad you have the sensitivity to pick up what enticing magical potion DS were oozing out in those days. Good for you, I say. If you need more info on songs by them to listen to next, I'm here to help out;) Maybe as you have alrady heard the studio version of Tunnel of Love, start with the live version (Wembley 85 or Alchemy) and then continue with the softer part of their repertoire. There is one tune, however, called "Once upon a time in the West" where I wonder whether you, too, when hearing the refrain they repeat for quite a few minutes, also would not want them to stop. That is how good they were. All the best

Your reflection on how Dire Straits captured the essence of your adolescence is beautifully articulated. It's incredible how music can evoke such vivid memories and emotions from our past. Their ability to blend storytelling with exceptional musicianship truly sets them apart. While the music landscape may have shifted, Dire Straits' impact remains profound for many, regardless of age. Thank you for sharing your personal connection with their music-it's a testament to their lasting legacy.
