The album Who's Next is easily one of the Top 10 Greatest Rock Albums

Parts of this iconic song have been used in commercials for years. "They're All Wasted". The WHO are seriously a band you are going to like a lot.
@jackp858311 ай бұрын
Yes, that was a violin at the end of the song. The video game sounds throughout the song are early analog synths, Pete Townshend was one of the pioneers of using them.

Last time I saw the Who live in concert was at the The Who concert disaster in Cincinnati at the Riverfront Coliseum December 3, 1979, which ended in tragedy where 11 fellow concert goers were killed in stampede outside the doors. Was amazing concert but such tragic end. Was a scary night, I was only a teenager and never witnessed anything like it before. The band was devastated and never played Cincinnati again until...but, forty-three years after that tragic night, the Who finally returned to Cincinnati. Thanx so much, take care, Peace

this song is about their experience playing at Woodstock. They were known as the worlds loudest rock band at one time. Great live shows.

nah. It's actually about Lifehouse, but the idea came for the Isle of Wight. Which is England. Pete didn't know dick about America.

My teens was in the 1960s. There were 4 bands that stood out for me; the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks. And the Who. To my mind, all bands and artists that followed walked in the footsteps of these 4 groups.

I consider (many) The WHO as the third most important British Band that influenced all others that followed. Beatles, Stones, Who... stand on the podium of Classic Rock Greatness. Thanks again JM.

I did not know Led Zeppelin Scottish!
@phillipharrison728311 ай бұрын
Not part of the British invasion of the early 60s. Zeppelin are the newer 'generation'. Beatles, Stones and Who are still the prime 3 of the British influence on 1963 to 1966 of the youth culture. Zeppelin eclipsed the whole thing. US bands were battling to keep up. The only 2 of any strength were the Doors and CCR

I was going to make that point. L.Z. Is NOT part of the "British Invasion" They were one of the groups influenced by the three other groups, like everyone after them were.@@phillipharrison7283

Hi. Here’s what I could find about that intro and outro: The repeating set of notes were recorded using a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ using its marimba repeat feature to generate them. Dave Arbus played the violin solo during the outro.

The WHO….. “The Kids Are Alright” Tour 1989. Rich Stadium Buffalo N.Y……..Roger stands front/center and Jogged the entire time singing "Who Are You?" looking backwards like he was being chased.. He was 45 years old… AWESOME After the concert the Who were being interviewed on the local radio station and the DJ asked the band…. “So what do you think about that new RAP music coming out”…. Roger Daltrey laughed and started to answer when John Entwistle said….. “let me answer this one….. It seems to me that if you can’t write music, can’t play music, can’t sing music, if you know absolutely nothing at all about music, well then, you do rap now don’t you”….. Then. Pete Townshend said….. “If Hitler was going to come back and torture the world again he would use rap music. Roger Daltrey laughed and said…. “Isn’t that the truth”

Interesting how every comment is their personal "cut-and-paste", mostly technical, but nobody listened to you enough to answer your question: *BABA O'RILEY* , which many people think is called "Teenage Wasteland", has a few different inspirations. The song, originally written by guitarist Pete Townshend, was inspired by two people; Meher Baba (an Iranian spiritual master) and Terry Riley (an American composer). It was originally written for a project that Townshend was working on but had been scrapped at the time. According to Townshend, after the band played their 1969 Woodstock concert, the field was covered in trash from fans, which inspired the line: "Teenage Wasteland". In an interview, the singer also said the song was inspired by “the absolute desolation of teenagers at Woodstock, where audience members were strung out on acid and 20 people had brain damage. The irony was that some listeners took the song to be a teenage celebration.”

It was called a "Sequencer" basically the pre-cursor for the modern synthesizer. That last solo was a violin played by Dave Arbus.

The rollicking, double-time outro part had already been recorded, when Dave Arbus was invited in to add violin. “That was Keith Moon's idea,” The drummer had visited the progressive rock group East Of Eden in the studio next door, and thought their violinist would make a perfect addition. In most live performances, this part is played instead by Daltrey on harmonica.

The Who headlined the memorial concerts held for the New York Fire Department in the years after 9/11. Their performance of "Baba O'Riley" was a highlight among highlights, with a thousand fire fighters rocking out with the band. As for the introduction... "I used gated Lowrey organ via EMS VCS3 gated filter. No sequencer. I got my ARP 2500 system (huge) just after I’d recorded the first few demos for Who’s Next. Baba O’Riley was a cheat. I couldn’t get the sequencers and mix-sequencers on the ARP under my fingers fast enough so I emulated sequencing and tape delays using the Marimba Arpeggiator effect on my Lowrey Berkshire." --Pete Townshend (unconfirmed)

This song is great, the opener of their album "Who's Next". But the original concept for the album was titled "Lifehouse", about a future world ruined by pollution, in which people live in lifehouses where they are safe and can breathe clean air, and surrounded by their computers (there was no internet in 1971, but one gets the sense that they had that in mind). The concept required incredibly meticulous playing, so they gave up on that, removed a few great unfinished songs ("Teenage Wasteland", for example), added the song "My Wife" so it wouldn't focus on the negative aspects of the concept, moved "Baba O'Riley" to the front, and retitled the album. The album cover shows they urinated on the lifehouse, indicating what they thought of that project and ironically polluting it.
