Some characters were nerfed purposely, like Strider and Wolverine, although Strider got re-purposed into a viable choice by people like Clockwork by making him a tandem with Doom. Others got nerfed simply because they were just dropped into the engine with no work done to make them compatible with the engine ie Chun Li. These types of characters have moves that just don't work as well as they did previously, such as Chun's legs super not being able to combo without an assist due to the start-up being longer or the screen freeze being shorter. We know they really didn't care about the ramifications of dumping sprites into the game without proper tooling because of how much time they spent on the new characters, specifically Cable, and his 1 frame AHVB. They even took out her air super, meaning they ACTUALLY HAD TO LOOK AT HER FILES, but just didn't want to do any real work. Same case with most of the non Marvel cast and Sabertooth.

He flies, can defeat the one exploitable weakness of his flight through a glitch, has massive reach, chip damage on normal hits, projectiles that cover the stage and can combo into and out of supers, a hit of super armor and can cover the arena faster than characters half his size...and that's WITHOUT assists from his team. He has literally everything. Is it any wonder you can't turn around without seeing him in a match? How he's not banned from more tournaments is beyond me. He's the Shin Akuma of MVC2.

@@RandoBox The way I understand it is that if your opponent blocks only the very last frame or two of the mouth beam, it's unblockable. So basically you can set up situations where you knock the opponent down and throw out a mouth beam while they're in recovery frames so they only get hit by the last couple frames of the move. Not easy, but the best players know how to do it pretty reliably.

We used to play like this to add depth so it wasn't always an MSS mirror match: 2 bans each. No one picks those characters. P1 bans once. P2 bans twice. Then P1 does second ban. No dupes in character select, so once a character is picked they can't be on the other team (or same team if you were on Dreamcast). P1 picks 1 P2 picks 1 and 2 P1 picks 2 and 3 P2 picks 3 You got some really varied teams that way and needed a deep roster. The last person to win was P1, not always the P1 slot. You could skip the ban phase if you wanted top tiers, since it was pretty much always MSSC that got banned in my town.

You also forgot about Sentinel's Unblockable. The ducking hp if you can make the thick outer portion miss but the inner portion hit, the inner portion will not be unblock able. There's a way to defeat it with some characters, like blocking 1 frame before the beam touches you. This allows you to conserve your guaranteed guard frames allowing you to block it, but some characters [Psylocke for example] can't use this defense at all. This can be done when a character falls in from the side of the screen, after falling from a super-jump, and after a hard knockdown in a combo allowing you to reset the damage possibly killing the character.

it's one of those games that has a bunch of layers you have to learn in succession to get to the level of "passable". and all the layers aren't spelled out explicitly somewhere. dreamcancel has a good guide on the basics but you have to learn the layers of exploits that were not intended by the devs that exist beyond that and those layers go from somewhat obscure to "only justin wong knows". if you want to be good. sounds like it's not worth the trouble but it's not as hard to learn when you just start doing it and when you start actually being able to do terrible versions of the stuff good players can do it becomes really addicting. it also helps you to be good at a bunch of other fighting games. if youre good at mvc2 your good at fighing games in general.

Did you not mentioned unblockable and DHC of death? These are relatively easier things to do than all the fly options and are actually more deadly. Also, the super armor makes it harder for rush down characters to successfully connect. Its also easy to do guard breaks using fast fly. And the biggest strength with sentinel is the fly speed where when just flying up and backwards, 90% of the cast cannot catch sentinel. With long range and highest damage normals in the game, sentinel can play air footsie with assist support, making him extremely dangerous in the air than on the ground.

none of those glitches are exclusive to Sentinel, though. Iron Man also abuses those with crazy efficiency.... with unfly mode activated, Iron Man is BY FAR the most menacing (not the best...) character in this game (even if he's not really the best one opening people up), basically, he's the only one that can kill anyone from any hit anywhere because of those very same glitches you pointed with Sentinel. also, I really thought you'd speak about Sentinel's unblockable... that thing is very important as well.
