Letchworth Village was a residential institution located in Rockland County, New York, in the hamlet of Thiells built for the physically and mentally disabled of all ages, from the newborn to the elderly. Opened in 1911, Letchworth Village at its peak consisted of over 130 buildings spread out over many acres of land. It was named for William Pryor Letchworth, who espoused reform in the treatment and care of the insane, epileptics, and poor children.
On February 27, 1950, the first trial case of the polio vaccine in the United States was administered to an 8-year-old patient by Hilary Koprowski, after he tried it on himself. After the patient suffered no side effects, the vaccine was administered to 19 more of the institution's children. Out of a total of 20 children, 17 developed antibodies to the virus, and none developed any complications.
Reports of inadequate funding and improper care of the residents, including children, were present dating back to the 1920s. Accounts surfaced of residents being found unclothed, unbathed, and neglected. In addition to rampant abuse among the institution's residents, staff also suffered abuse at the hands of co-workers, which included incidents of rape.
In 1996 the institution was permanently closed down, and many of its abandoned structures have since fallen into serious disrepair.

Incase you didn't know the tunnels were used to transport dead bodies at one point. I know someone who worked there before it closed. She was horrified at the stuff she saw but didn't wanna leave because she was just about the only good one left helping those people. I had an absolutely terrifying experience here and will never return. Whatever was there followed me home and terrible things started happening. Just a fair warning. I wish I got to read up on everything before I went. By far the most haunted place I've ever been. And I was never scared of anything. Ive been to over 100 haunted places, used oija boards, ive seen a lot. I was always the first one in and the last one out anywhere we went. This place changed my life. I refuse to go into any haunted place ever again. If you ever wanna hear about what happened feel free to contact me!

Oh my god.. So I was talking to my friend about abandoned places in New York tonight, and I got on the topic of Letchworth. I just started going off about everything I knew about it, and I had mentioned the tunnels and how I had never found the entrance from the inside, only the outside, that hole in the ground. And I wondered if anyone had ever gone into them, cause I would be wayyy too scared to lol So I typed it into youtube and you were the first to come up! And I was like omg no way! Idk how I haven't seen this video of yours before. Anyway, I watched the whole thing (Fantastic btw) and realized how close I had been to the tunnels so many times. I love exploring the power house, but I just get too freaked out being in that pitch darkness (plus I only have a phone flash light) so I usually just stick to the big main area and a few of those side rooms, and the roof. One time I went pretty deep in, but chickened out and turned back. Turns out it was just a little further. And I peaked my head into that building you came out of but was not going to walk in that high water so I walked away. Thats just crazy. Cant say I would've had the guts to go in them if I did find them, it would probably just make for a really funny vlog of me panicking LOL Thanks for sharing this! So glad to know now after all these years!

Thank you very much for your kind words and for watching. Letchworth will always hold a special place in our hearts. We have been there so many times now and it just never gets old! There is so much to explore there. I swear we have done like 6 or more videos from there throughout the years. The tunnels were amazing to be in but they are dark and a little creepy!! You should give it a try!! We bet you could do it!! Just bring extra light in case because you don't want to get caught down there in the dark without any light. Good luck and we will look for a vlog from you in the tunnels!!! Stay safe!!! :)

@@JMExplorations I am going back in early June to show a friend of mine who's never explored anything abandoned, and I'll TRY to get as close to them as I can for a vlog 😅 but no promises, I'm a big scardy cat when it comes to the darkness. It'll definitely be funny though. One other question! I have been there so many times but on this visit, I would also really like to find either the hydro therapy tubs or I heard there is a second morgue? Not the one in the main building near the lab but.. I've heard of it. Just never found it. Do you know where either of those things are? I would LOVE to photograph them with my better equipment. Watching your videos has got me all excited again!

Hey how is everything? Is the tunnel entrance near some weird old bathtubs? Which is almost always flooded.
@JMExplorations
@JMExplorations 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. You are talking about the right building, but not the right area. We know exactly where you are talking about (is the chair still there in the water?) The entrance is actually going away from this area and if you are walking away, it will be on the right. When we were there, there was graffiti on the wall pointing the way. If you see that, follow it... it is difficult to explain, but if you watch the video, it should help you locate it.

i understand that are about 7 or 8 buildings still in use on the property. they're running off a small package boiler building now. so they may be blocked off of rest of the abandoned tunnel system. there's a street going though the area called wilbur av. plus most old asylums and institutions all have an underground utility steam tunnel system

love the tunnel tour. it's a lot like the marcy asylum/state hospital steam tunnels. I've been in some of the marcy asylum steam tunnels as a teenager. but not all of them. but I still remember whare all the marcy asylum tunnels are to this day. Letchworth village has a vary large tunnel system too I see.

John Morrison thank you very much and Letchworth Village is such an amazing place to visit!! SO many buildings to see with surprises around every corner! It's so funny but we have never heard of Marcy Asylum. What state is it in? We would love to check it out if it is still standing!
