I know this is an old video. I found it on youtube today, 8/23/2023. I was searching for stringer rebuilding. I currently have an 1980 Ebbtide Dyna Trak 160. It's a tri-V 16' bassboat. I will be doing exactly what you did on your boat, a cap off restore. I am currently awaiting my settlement from the Navy on the Camplejune debacle. Lost both parents, dad was the marine and the whole family lived there for over a year. So anyway, It's pretty much on hold for now. Watching and will rewatch a few times. Great job on this project, and should last another 30-40 years.

First thank you to you and your family for your service. I also want to say thank you for your comment and watching. I've been using this boat for a few summers now and I can honestly say it was worth every minute I spent working on it. Good luck on your restoration, I hope these videos offer something.

Going back and looking at the series from the beginning. I have a 77 t166xl that I bought from a neighbor with a Mercury Thunderbolt 850. I have never owned a boat but am pretty handy with things except bodywork. But I know there is rot under the Aft SB section and have been to busy and poor to start on this project. I know the motor runs, but plan on going through the motor before it ever hits the water again. I appreciate all the experience and information to this point.

Thank you for your videos. I just started gutting a boat and your videos and detailed narrative have helped me a lot.

Another good video. I'm only slightly ahead of you on similar timeline for my GT160, transom/stringers done. Like you, I also plan on foaming under the floor. Keep up the great work!

Thanks GlastronRules! I am uploading another video right now. I got a special delivery today. You have anything online of your project?
@GlastronRules10 жыл бұрын
jmink you'll find me on either boating forum, just search for '1972 GT-160'. Sorry no videos on KZbin for this current project, but I have lots of pics. Just put the cap back on yesterday, temporarily in place while I bed the flooring.

Hi jmink,I'm restoring a '79 Glastron Carlson CVX-16 and your videos have been really helpful. I have the cap off and have the hull almost completely stripped. I'm still debating if I want to take on rebuilding the transom. My question is about the grinding and sanding. I will be installing a new stringer, deck, and bulkhead. I believe my boat has the same fiberglass cloth material lining the hull as your '73, but mine seems to be more porous. There's not really a smooth finish of resin to grind or sand. In some areas where the deck was glued or epoxied to the hull, the cloth or weave material is completely exposed, as in how it would look if it was new and had no resin on it. Can I fiberglass right over the cloth in that condition? Also, for areas of the cloth that do have resin on them, I feel like if I grind or sand them, I'm taking away some of the cloth to get the resin off. Is this acceptable? Hope that wasn't confusing. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi +ChrisTube thanks for watching! I wish I had some experience with the fiberglass cloth situation that you are in with the old cloth is exposed. I can't say this is the right answer, but if it were me I would prep that surface and lay more fiberglass on top and resin it all in. To answer the next question; there were lots of areas in my boat where I took some of the resin down on existing cloth to get it roughed up, then I wiped it down with acetone and laid new cloth and resin over. I hope this helps some and good luck!

+jmink Thanks for the reply. I suppose if the cloth is bare, it is going to soak up the resin well and make for a good surface to add layers to. As far as the cloth that does have resin on it, the best way I can describe it is it is like the surface of a waffle. To sand the resin in the deep parts, I think I would be grinding away the actual cloth in the high parts. I was worried about weakening the cloth, but maybe this is unavoidable. Thanks for the advice. I'll get some pics or vids up soon.

I'm doing the same project, I'm wondering if I should leave some of the stringer wood exposed so it can dry out in the event that it gets wet. Even just a six inch section towards the top near the ends , I'm also considering doing that on the transom as the boat will never get that full of water where the top needs to be completely sealed in. Just leaving a 6 inch section of the wood exposed should allow it to dry out. It will get wet due to osmosis through the fiberglass its a proven fact.... what do you think?
@jmink10 жыл бұрын
First I've ever heard of leaving a section exposed. It is definitely something to think about. But, considering how much of my stringers were exposed and they were still wet and rotted I believe I will seal them 100% and take my chances.

Great project Josh , Just started watching ! Do you still have the boat? I have a question about how your neighbors reacted to all the grinding dust and noise? I used to do glasswork at a shop and remember that the Dust was everywhere. Victor

Thanks! Yes I do still have the boat, I just put out a video recently of the boat out on the water. I never had any complaints from my neighbors, I think they were used to me working on things and let me be.

Im trying to get through your series to help get a game plan on my boat. Did I miss the reason why you have left the center stringer so far?

Never mind I found it in episode 11 . Thank you for the series!

Hi, just wondering how many hours it took you to remove and grind the old stringers ready for the new?
@jmink7 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Pete man that's tough to remember, but I would estimate I spent 4 or 5 hours on that. Without looking up any data from my old video files that's my best guess. Make sure you have all of your supplies before starting, I underestimated the number of flap discs that I needed and had to buy more to finish the job. I think originally I about 5 or 6 discs and I remember doubling up to finish.

Man I spent 4 hr grinding and it was horrible I stop like half way.
