We played crash 'em up cars with our models on the front porch walkway which was super smooth concrete. We loved the Jo-Han cars because they all had that solid chassis and we would add metal axles so that the wheels rolled. I wish I had all those models back today...but we had such fun.

The superbird was actually based on the roadrunner and it used 70' dodge coronet front fender and hood modified to fit the nose cone which was different slightly than the daytona front end. Builds into a cool kit though.

The Superbird had its 2 front fenders from the 70 Dodge Coronet so the nose cone could fit - the front fenders of a 70 Roadrunner were different than the Superbird - I had a few Jo han kits back in the early 90s and the only place you could find them were at hobby shops- wish I would've stocked up on a few more

I used to get my models from Kmart, Kay Bee Toys at the mall, and Walmart. Never even knew about JoHan until a friend who was a Mopar nut showed some to me and we went to a real hobby shop that no longer exists. I think you have something about the rear stabilizers on the wing, I think it was Richard Petty that said you couldn't spin one of these cars out no matter how hard you tried. The wing is high I think only because of the air coming off the roof. It doesn't have anything to do with opening the trunk I think because all the other cars with conventional spoilers had to have opening trunks also. Very nice of Mark to let you use your channel to review this kit. It does seem to be very detailed.

Great video. Like you, I really don’t have an infatuation with JoHan kits like a lot of modelers. The department store where I bought kits growing up had JoHan kits, but not the good ones like the Maverick, Comet, and the Superbird. So I was not interested in them. That kit looks like a well detailed kit except for the chassis. I do remember seeing those dry transfer decals, but only for tires. That kit certainly seems a little better than that AMT kit. I recently built the AMT kit. The Hemi in the AMT kit is great but get your putty ready for the body, because you will definitely need it. It was very nice of Mark to let you borrow that kit for a video. Thanks for sharing.

Built this as a kid. And then looking at my pictures (still got it) of the car I see a lot of mistakes. Sorry but johan was the best at the time. I don’t remember the rub on decals. I did change “Plymouth by Petty” to Plymouth by Wakefield with rub on letters. I switched the 4 and 3 around. I noticed in the picture that I had the “34” upside down on the roof. Back than I didn’t know jack about nascar. Thank you for the memories.

Most people don't realize how different the Daytona and Superbird are. The only parts they share are the flip up headlight buckets. The wings, nose cones, fender scoops, rear window plugs, and A-pillar wind deflectors are different. Fun fact, the street Superbirds were only available with a vinyl top so that Chrysler didn't have to worry about the mud work around the rear window plug! They used 1970 Dodge Coronet fenders and hood, although heavily modified. In 1969 Dodge had to build 500 to qualify in Nascar (they built 503 Daytona's) but in 1970 Plymouth was required to build 1500 (they built 1920 total).

I'm sure this has been said, but the Superbird is based on the Roadrunner. And the GTX is based on the Roadrunner too. I think this is a great kit for you to learn from. I have this kit and built it back in the mid-90s. What I didn't like was the option to build the race version meant you HAD to have the stock exhaust in the chassis. Which is wrong.
@animalyze7120
@animalyze7120 2 жыл бұрын
The Roadrunner is based on the Belvedere the GTX was based on the Sport Satellite, most body lines were identical but the trims were different. GTX was basically a decked out car with all the frills and the Roadrunner was bare bones. Only slight differences to the grilles & Taillights, the Coronet donated it's fenders and hoods to the Roadrunner to help conjure up the Superbirds. Genius use of parts back in those days.

Jo-Han, (for the guys name: John Hanley), produced some of the most accurately detailed kits. That's why they are the most sought after kits out there. I would suggest looking up (use the googles) info on the real cars you want to learn about. You'll learn things to improve your knowledge on the car. Like the rear wing! It was NOT that high so the trunk could open. They actually did wind tunnel tests to get the height right. And the wing was adjustable for each track. Also, the front fenders were not from the 70 Roadrunner. See if you can find out what they were from. (I know, but this is the test to se what you learned. lol).

The Superbird was not based on the GTX, it was however based on the Road Runner. I had this same kit some 40 years ago and mine was molded in a dark green and the body was covered in mold release agent, which I knew nothing about back then, and it had so much static I ended up brushing Testors primer all over the body. Also if your friend does not have the decals needed he can find them on Mike's decals web site.

Love the Johan kits. Have several 63 furys and 64 polara 440's in my displays. Their bodies were excellent in detail and fit. Chassis are usually simple, minimal parts, if not promo level. Aa far as I know, the 69 Daytona was based on the charger body. The 70 Superbird was based off the roadrunner/gtx body. Those cars were among the first to use wind tunnel testing for r&d. Street versions could be had with either 426 single 4 barrel carb, or the 440 wedge with either single 4 barrel carb or six pak (3 - 2 barrel carbs). 727 auto or 4spd. w/ pistol grip. Rear wing was made for downforce and to clear trunk lid. side and fender scoops on street versions were non functional.

The Superbird was built from a Road Runner pulled from the assembly line and sent to Creative Industries.(Chrysler “B” body platform, also includes GTX) They attached 70 Dodge Coronet fenders and leading hood edge, to better mate the nose cone. I like and have several of these kits, but the do not accurately replicate the street stock or NASCAR Superbird. The NASCAR wheel openings are shaped differently and flared a little. The street version has details that are missing on this kit, like the front wheel opening lip and diamond shaped fillers at the lower corners of the rear window, to name a few.

Matt, this is an awesome kit. I found one of these at an antique mall about 15 years ago for 10 bucks. It had been started and needed restored so in 2020 I finally got around to it. I opted to go with the Petty race version. The decals were pretty bad shape so i went with a very nice set from Mikes decals. One of my prized models. The Superbirds were produced only in 1970 and they had 1970 dodge coronet front fenders in order to accept the front cone, hence the forward sloping leading edge. My kit was molded in green. I have a couple old jo-han models. I always liked them because they're just kind of unique. Love your channel and your enthusiasm of the hobby!Thanks!

Of course I’ve had almost every brand you can think of but I honestly have never had a problem with a Johan kit. I also have the turbine car. I don’t think I’m gonna build that one I’m just gonna keep it in the box. I already have another turbine car, under glass that is built. I just ordered the Pradicta , and expecting that in the mail soon. I love the 1964 version, the body was a deep burgundy color and they didn’t make that many of them. The later versions came in white .They are hard to find. The burgundy ones.I was wondering if you ever had one.I had one when I was young and God only knows where it is now. Really nice kit! I may be wrong but the JoHan kits were more of a promo style kit as was AMT and MPC. And we’re used as such, hence the simple frames. There were exceptions such as the classic kits and special kits like the turbine. Again some of your kit historian friends would know more. They were fun to build and “Play”with in a non destructive sort of way.

JoHan's mold making were second to none. Their 'shut offs" in the mold themselves were well thought out and extremely expensive to manufacture. Most Johan kits had the shut off along a major body line or the top of the fenders. Mopar used Carter carburetors.

Boy that kit has a lot of flash on it for a Jo-Han. For someone who wants to improve your knowledge...you sure avoided that list of stuff about the model that Mark sent you. I would start there maybe . LOL!

Gtx and roadrunner is same body with different trim packages. And yes, the wing worked for downforce and side force. Johan started out making dealer promos. Which could be why their chassis and interior remained so simplified on some of their models.

I’m sure somebody probably mentioned this, but the Superbird was a Road runner. Y’know, super “bird.” The front angle is way different on the 1970, which is what the Superbird was. The 69 was definitely more square out front. As for Jo Han kits, there was a shop near me that closed about 10 years ago that still had Jo Han kits on the shelves at the time they went out of business. Talk about your missed opportunities…

The height of the wing was set high to put more downforce on the ass end at high speeds and also to clear the trunk and were the scoops are on top if the fenders were cut open , they told NASCAR. it was for tire clearance but it let all the built up air out from underneath. The race Hemi only used one carb, and the race headers a correct from what I’ve read. The rear crossmember of the wing was also adjustable for different angles, the black shading or shadow effect on the 43 number should be dark blue not black , so the decals are not correct either

Clearing the trunk was only part of the reason: the shape, size and height of the end plates has a big significance in the effectiveness of the aerofoil. A good example is the Le Mans and ALMS prototypes of the late 90s and early 2000s, when gradually the end plates on the rear wings got taller and taller until they were physically part of the rear bodywork. Until the rules were changed so that there had to be a gap, but with wind tunnel tricks the rules change didn't make any practical difference. Also, with the rear wing on the Daytona and Superbird up that high, it was in cleaner air and thus working more efficiently. Plus, with center of pressure of the wing up that high, with the longer lever compared to something like a trunk lid spoiler, you get more for the amount downforce it's making, also better because you can then use a smaller aerofoil and have less drag. This kind of stuff was particularly important when the underfloor part of generating downforce on a race car hadn't been really been understood properly just yet. That in contrast to for example IMSA GTP cars of the late 80s and early 90s, where they discovered that if you put an enormous wing with big end plates close to the exit of the rear diffuser on the car, the wing helps extract even more air through the diffuser and it makes a lot more downforce for little increase in drag. Someone already mentioned the scoops and them being for tire clearance, while also conveniently extracting air from the front wheel wells. There's a lot of neat bodywork and chassis tricks as well as race car crudeness on those aero cars that I don't think most car people realize even today.

Great video Matt!! I have that model in my collection of jo han. The simple design of the frames were the norm for most amt mpc andjo han back in that era. Subject matter can't go wrong. One drawback on jo han is.. They become very fragile plastic. Thanks bud!! 👍👍🚚🛵🚛🚗🛻🚘🚙🦧🍌🙏

I wish I was at a bar one night and ran into a fellow who claims his storage shed was filled with junky Ol' car model molds from a company named "Johan" and is ready to take them to a metal recycling center for scrap metal. Wouldn't that be the shit if something like that happened ? No one knows what ever happened to Johans tool, Dies, and molds. "IF"........the molds were in decent condition they would make someone a bit of money right ? They could sell them to AMT, or Revell . We can ONLY DREAM. Not many builders like Johan but they made kits no other manufacturer would make. They gotta be somewhere, right ? I have 5 prestine unbuilt kits I would love to build, but for what they are going for on the internet.......NEWWWW WAY ,they will stay unbuilt, in their boxes. Lol. Lately I have been thinking about my life and realistically how much time I have left on this planet and I was kicking around the idea of willing out my entire model collection to Matt. My brother in Law builds but he builds specific type models and most of what I have would not interest him and he is 5 years older then me. Well Matt, you may be in my will, LOL I NEVER EVER saw someone who loves models like you. God Bless you 🙏 LOL and your family.

Issue is that you compared a '70 (the Superbird) to a '69 (the Roadrunner/GTX). That's why you feel they're highly different. But I've built Monogram '70 RR and '70 GTX and I can tell you that they go "straight" and that the bend on the Superbird is 'cuz of the nosecone as you said.

The decals for these kits was always a downer, no wing or nose superbird decals. I have seen the rub on decals and they are horrible. I grew up building johan kits. Still do

Not sure about those decals? I have an original kit I built back in the 70s. It has waterslide decals on it. All of the eight to ten other Johan kits I have all came with waterslide decals. They are all original kits bought by me in the 60s or 70s. Johans kits were well detailed but their decals were the worst!

They were good kits but way overrated in the hobby collection world. Jo-Han offered some detail the others didn't but also left out others the competitors did put in, the trade off is meh. The issue I had was Jo-Han kits weren't easy to come by even here in Chicago back in the 70's. Some places did sell them but it was usually the same kits so many became rare to people in different locations. If they had distributed netter they may have lasted as the kits went together well in the later years when they switched materials and warpage wasn't an issue. I still have a few unbuilt ones but really haven't the gumption to open them up as their value is skyrocketing and for the end result it's not worth it to build, they are just more valuable unopened. P.S Superbirds were adapted from the Roadrunner not the up trimmed car the GTX (Originally Belvedere and Sport Satellites respectively). The GTX was an upscaled trim packaged version of the (Sport Satellite), The Roadrunner which was the bare bones poor mans drag racer lol. The Superbird utilized the front fenders and hood of the 1970 Coronet to get the slope to make it easier to mate that front nose to the car. Interesting note that these cars are rare because at the time nobody liked the looks and sales were very limited, they did well on the track but horrible in the showroom. Daytona and Superbirds in my opinion were always the ugliest of Chrysler's lineup but they still were ahead of their time. That huge nose was Fugly and the rear wing...well it's stands alone. I have several versions of these kits as to me they are very nostalgic, though I never got the Jo-Han one as their Kits were blah to us back then.
