Actually the Hemi was Half the reason it was banned. The Hemi is the ONLY engine Banned in Every style of racing at one point or another...which is why it a legend. 1952 the A311 331 ci Hemi was blowing away the fastest Indycars away (track records) that they complained and had the displacement regulations lowered for the hemi and other pushrod engines. Ford did the same for the Hemi in Nascar and superspeedways in 1971. The Father of the Funny car,....the Mopar altered wheeled cars were Banned from running in NHRA in 1965 and moved to IHRA racing. Funny thing is that Cummins....associated with MOPAR since 1989, also was a first at INDY with being the first HiPo diesel powered race car....back in they 1950s. They never had to stop for fuel, only tires. 40 yrs later Audi Diesels got into racing...and it was a big deal, LMFAO.
@davidthayer69695 жыл бұрын
nonsense, the superbird was NEVER outlawed and the HEMI was not either......geeze the Hemi won a ton of races between 1966 and about 1974........NASCAR limited all 5 aerocars, the superbird, daytona, torino talladega and mercury cyclone and the charger 500 to a 305 inch engine after 1970.......NO individual car was outlawed.

@silverbird58 - I was told that the advantage Elliot had was the soft cylinder head material developed by Ernie , Bill's brother, which allowed a higher compression ratio. Everyone thought Bill must be cheating after winning so many races, but it was all legal!

@kingduckford2 жыл бұрын
@@jerryfrederick6610 That's the nature of those old big OHV's. The detuned big blocks could produce ~350 BHP and ~500 ft. lbs. of torque and preferred to drive around all day at idle, and could launch the big cars with little effort. The high tuned versions, and the bigger the heads and airflow the worse it got, suffer at idle and some will almost stall if not attended. Nature of the OHV, and something oft forgotten in the modern era of OHC. A generally tuned motor had to be big to produce big horsepower, but those big boys had great torque and power bands, and to high tune the horsepower potential out of them meant issues on the short end. There is a reason why OHC has done what is has done in the market....
@C6Z_Bob3 ай бұрын
@kingduckford the reason for OHC is because of displacement regulations in many countries, forcing them to make more power with less displacement. Cam in block engines are still everywhere in America. The beauty of a cam in block design is that it's very compact. My LS7 (7.0l) is smaller and lighter than a BMW S65 (4.0l). It also makes a lot more horsepower.

Sunglasses and OTT hat aside Richard Petty looks like a true gentleman. I love the bit where the bloke shooting asks if he can start the car and Lary is like "If Richard Petty says yes then its a yes". We need people like that in racing today. For the record, I'm using my wife's account. I had the privilege of growing up in Charlotte, NC during the 60's and 70's and with my NASCAR fan dad. My dad took us on 4 "camping trips" a year to the infields of Charlotte Motor Speedway and North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham to watch the races from a platform built on the top of an old IH Metro van. I got to see 6 races with the winged cars (2 in October 1969 with the Charger Daytonas and 4 in 1970 with the Superbirds and Daytonas). They were definitely sights and sounds I will never forget. I watch NASCAR today and long for the days when the cars were actually stock and the drivers had personalities.

That noise. That beautiful noise. Hearing the symphony of pure volumetric efficiency. That unmistakable sound of a MOPAR Hemi. There’s no other V8 on earth that sounds quite like it.

They should have Richard Petty drive that as the car that that starts the race off one time! that would be cool!
@warrenchambers48197 жыл бұрын
Do it a Daytona 2017.(but better make sure there's only enough fuel to make it around the track 1 time or Richard may not start the race but run in it.)

Hello, that is a smooth-running car. Very nice tune up. No unnecessary after fire pops and explosions at all. Well done Gentlemen. Thank you for uploading this video.

Possibly the only man who ever lived that could make a cheesy 'stache, cowboy hat, and shades, actually look damned cool. Lol. Seem to recall something decades ago about the shades hiding burn scars? The keen wrench eye noting such things as the holes where door trim was removed .. the golden age of NASCAR when there was still a whole lot of stock in stock car. Can't even be bothered to watch any more. :( (When) I play the lottery occasionally .. always a 43 in there.

I remember skipping school to go out to MIS and watch qualifying. They would let you hang on the fences in Turn One. I will never forget watching Petty's Superbird come about a foot from our faces at MIS. God thank you for those days...

Now that's when NASCAR was about building fast cars with no computers and few sponsors! (Money) Mechanical ingenuity at its finest; and remember, this car is geared to go 200mph with a four speed so low end acceleration wasn't its strong point.

Chuck Gura makes sense. I was wondering how he had it cruising at like 30 mph without it jerking.
@Lofi.z347 жыл бұрын
It seemed to be jerking a little bit when he was following the red firetruck looking vehicle with the camera crew, perhaps the car wanted to rocket off!
