and it's a nice bit of characterization for freeman. dude likely isn't a killer at heart, so he isn't going to kill someone he doesn't have to. he ambushed most of the other guys because at this point, they were hostile to him. but all that remained of this particular unit was the one injured bastard. there was no point in killing him if he wasn't putting up a fight. but at the same time, it might also show how terrifying he is to them: took out the whole unit, walks up like a talk, silently stares into the survivor's sole, and leaves him to potentially bleed out as he walks off. seems kind of cold to the marine.

I always wondered where in the world did Freeman pick up his skills from. The man wasn't just dunking on HECU but literal black op assassins, armed and armored vehicles, aliens, and other extra dimensional beings. All this happens "hours" after the incident and for all we know the Hazard Course was the only time Freeman actually trained on a firearm.
@waffy_kun
@waffy_kun 11 ай бұрын
Lots of morphine injections and constant adrenaline his body is producing in response to everything around him that could potentially kill him. It keeps his focus, nerves, survival instincts and wits sharp despite fatigue, injury, lack of sleep, hunger and et cetera. It's not that he is a professional shooter/fighter as seen in his simple shooting/reload animations but the HEV suit (both armor and chemicals) made him superhuman to the point that he can wack tough objects continuously with a heavy crowbar or see/aim/shoot straight and far under heavy combat despite not having the same training as the HECU.
@AParticularlyConcernedCitizen
@AParticularlyConcernedCitizen 11 ай бұрын
I don't understand why people take the hazard course so literally, as if Gordon wouldn't have had to run it several times and receive extensive training just to operate the suit and his weapons effectively. Valve wasn't going to shove hours of hazardous environment training into a video game. The, "Wear the power armor and dive headfirst into a pile of Xenian bullshit," job isn't something you'd give a guy a single run through an obstacle course for.

The pacing, scene shots are cooked REALLY well. Makes me wonder, despite this probably would never actually happen cause of either adrenaline or military disclipine, but if the game does code one or two HECU soldiers to breakdown or giveup and not shoot at you if you wipe their team out, would players spare them? Fascinating to think of. Also good job sprinkling bits of ded scientists and guards, spawning the feeling of "yeah those soldiers did to other people the atrocities they are experiencing right now" despite the visceral horror shown thus far. Good craft.

Everyone focuses on the other factions and how hard it is to not have his HEV Suit. All of these SFM Animations showing how powerful the combine are or how terrified the HECU are, and in turn how scary the alien forces are, also hyped up how fucking menacing and lethal Freeman is. This does a really nice job of capturing the ridiculous horror that is Gordon Freeman. A random scientist that has absolutely no reason whatsoever to be as much of a menace as he is. All people knew was that this man just had some basic training, was at ground zero during the resonance cascade and then forced to traverse a research site turned into a literal hell by both Xen and HECU forces. From a logical standpoint Gordon should’ve stood absolutely no chance, the probability of simply getting out of there alive was slim to none. Yet despite the overwhelming odds, Gordon manages to prevail. He single handedly goes toe to toe against squadrons of trained soldiers, extra-terrestrial beasts, war machines and super soldiers with his arsenal, ranging from basic firearms to laser guns that annihilate entire armored vehicles. No wonder this guy attained legend status after Black Mesa.

For the average HECU, Gordon is literally a terminator. You’re just manning your position before suddenly you hear metal footsteps and gunshots. You fire at the source, but all you hear is lead clanking against metal. Then, you see the orange suit devoid of humanity with its helmet. Nothing lies beyond the visor but your own karma.

I like HECU better than the Combine in the Half-Life universe. Instead of the "Contact confirmed. Engaging." like the Combine, I rather enjoy the "Contact! Contact! Engaging!" of the HECU. EDIT: You should also do a Half-Life 2 one called, "Officer Down", about Civil Protection in a gunfight against Rebels.

Holy crap this was masterfully done, LOVE the animation on the soldier who got startled and slipped down the stairs, it's so perfect with the movement/weight, how he grasps onto the steps but still stutter-falls down. The fact that the squad lacks cohesion once the lead is down and everyone starts doing their own thing makes for such a great narrative here. That ending is so *wonderful*, the only thing I would change for it is for it to fit into frame the dead scientists with the soldier on the ground, to show a nice parallel between the two. "I killed your guys, you killed civilians; who's the real monster here?"

Agreed watching all his friends die. And then then for the rest of the game Gordon unknownly fights Mitchell and defeats him and every hecu marine in a few battles each time Gordon slashes him with the crow bar leaving a new seat on his face. This would fit as Mitchell said. " Whatever it takes. Whoever it takes. Whatever I have I have to do before I die. I will kill you. "' This he probably say in the first or last encounter with Gordon Freeman. And each time Mitchell loses more of his men and friends die to Gordon hand and crowbar. And even though Gordon never sees Mitchell face. Mitchell would always remember Gordon Freeman as the man who his so many of his marine buddies.

omg bro, I assumed they were fighting the black ops because I was thinking, if they were fighting Gord he'll be sprinting around, jumping and blasting on full auto all the time, switching between his full arsenal of weaponry like a madman. He's a madman in this one alright, but in such a grim dark manner, that was 100% one of the best Half-Life animations I've ever seen to date. The choice of soundtrack for Gord's entrance was perfect too.

I come back to watch this every once in a while and I always notice new cool little details. Like this time it stuck out to me how all the scenes where the HECU marines are showing compassion for their squadmates, like the corpsman rushing to the squad leader, are directly juxtaposed by dead BM staff right in the center of the shot. A nice little reminder of why Gordon has had to become such a killing machine.

This is exactly how Dr Freeman will have to fight to survive. Superb! Did complete justice to this iconic game! That enigma is who we were when we played Half-Life. Simply amazing! The direction, the entire sequence. The entire pacing is due to the direction. Really says a lot about the creator's skills. Much, much more exciting than many hand-to-hand sequences. Weird to think that these soldiers were just on a regular day of their job.

Had to re-check if the guy had a beret when I heard who the first casulty was, of course the cohesion was fucked when the Squad leader was the first one to go down! I really liked the end with the gas mask filter's noise increasing, as we heard that odd noise slowly building up during the face down between Freeman and the soldier. All in all as usual stellar animation, and it is done in Gmod aswell! Things look like they've got some weight to it and the sfx aswell is spot on as usual, the vibrating shockwave noises from the explosions in particular.
