even though I wasn’t alive to experience or witness these kinds of things I kinda miss how concerts used to be. they seemed so chill and they didn’t have to make such a huge spectacle. they were just sharing their music. I also find it cool that people like the baez sisters, cash, and possibly others went out of their way to entertain the incarcerated!

Yes!!! So true😅
@tmckenny2994 Жыл бұрын
@johnnylongshlong3677there’s a huge difference in concerts performed in the 60’s to the 80’s compared to what you would see today. The fact that this was performed at a prison has no bearing on it at all. This is how the audiences reacted back then.
@MFWb00bi3s Жыл бұрын
@tmckenny2994 that's a very broad generalization you're making based on my experiences. in my opinion most of audience behavior is dependent on the genre of music, and to a lesser extent popularity of the artist and location/venue. think about the difference between a classical performance in a concert hall, a local folk band at a farmers market, and big name rock concert at an outdoor amphitheater. or look at the reactions of young women towards the beatles then versus boy bands of recent times. when viewed this way, very little has changed from the late 60s until now. however you could make the argument that crowd behavior at things like heavy metal and edm concerts, genres which have popped up relatively recently, are clearly indicative of a changing society e.g. mosh pits and raves.
@tmckenny2994 Жыл бұрын
@@MFWb00bi3s we had heavy metal in the early 70’s. There were no mosh pits. Things were different. What you claim was happening with the Beatles in the 60’s wasn’t anything new. Those girls started that behavior in the 50’s. It was also, just the girls. LOL
@MFWb00bi3s Жыл бұрын
@@tmckenny2994 Don't you think it's a bit silly to compare Led Zeppelin to stylistically modern heavy metal? There has been 50 years of expansion of the genre. That's like saying F1 racing of 1970 is the same as today. It's the same concept but has changed radically and boundries are being pushed year after year. There is a reason bands like Pantera aren't typically being played on classic rock stations even though Metallica is. I also used the beatles as an example of fanatic fandom because they are the most immediately recognized. Your claim that this behavior began in the 1950s and has continued unchanged since confirms my belief that genre and artist popularity are the driving factors behind audience behavior, not it simply boiling down to a generational difference. You also made the assertion that the behavior of the incarcerated men in this video these men are do with the fact that they are innmates. These are men who have lost their freedom and live under a strict ruleset with no means of live entertainment. A concert for them Is an incredible privilege, and any sort of misbehavior would have this privilege revoked. They would be on their best behavior. Once again, I say it's genre, popularity, and venue based modifiers. I have seen plenty of recent classical performances, folk shows, and they are quite serene and easy going, like the music tends to be. The opposite result for things like heavy metal and electronic shows with plenty of erratic behavior, just as the music tends to be. Blues, rock, americana country and the like tend to fall somewhere in the middle with some quiet and some dancing and singing along. And at shows with big pop stars with an enormous fan base? A lot of starry-eyed fanaticism and crazed behavior, along with some casual enjoyers. I posit it's the music that has changed much more than than we as a people have.

David! Had no idea this is your video! You’re phenomenal and just became cooler 😅! This is one of my favorite music vids; Mimi and Joan added light~love for the men…we can feel~see their reactions. Music is the great unifier; they sound heavenly singing together with their gorgeous harmonies. Mimi once asked Joan if she should pursue music as a career like her older sister had. Joan wanted her to do something different. Just like the youngest sister should~could do; Mimi chose music and toured with her husband. His life was cut short in a horrible motorcycle accident. So sad Mimi passed young too; she gathered the family around and asked them if it was ok to say goodby; Joan said she didn’t do well with her loss. There is a very good YT vid with her talking about the experience. 😻

I'm not as old as David but my advice would be to try to balance the practical concerns of survival with any interest you have in idealism for a better world and a greater sense of humanity. Don't sacrifice your dreams and idealism in order to survive in a cruel capitalist reality. But also don't let idealism distract you from dealing with your immediate practical needs. Let me know if this makes any sense! ❤
@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the request. My response feels cool but the truth is I don't have the time to answer you. The single piece of wisdom that comes to mind, and I have not spent as much time as I should thinking about it, is to follow your curiosity. Some folks have passion. Some do not. But whatever you are curious about could be potentially what you do that you love, and makes you a living. David Hoffman filmmaker

It is estimated that for every 20 convictions 1 soul has been wrongly sentenced, completely innocent. Contrary are those never convicted through luck, power, or wit. Even more staggering, why are some born into suffering, poverty, and misfortune, why must they be punished for mankind’s serving of self individualism? Maybe the age we figure this out we would have achieved purpose of our existence, or even the universe.
