@@jeffreyjohnson8 Myrna Loy only said, when she once worked with Christina on some production, that she could at times be resistant and stubborn with the producers. @@nassauguy48 no was referring not to BD Hyman but to the mother. She thought the Christina story was not true. And she despised Crawford. Loys response was when she was asked about the allegations. Joan was a high conflict, manipulative narcissist who likely had chosen Christina to be her scapegoat. Parents set the tone in families.abused children rarely lie. It is obvious that Joan was more interested in enhancing her public image because she used her adopted children and her contributions to charities to achieve that end. She was a fraud, no doubt about it. Christina told her story honestly. The reason it is so shocking to some people is that most children who find themselves in Cristina"s predicament are shamed into silence. We should applaud Christina"s courage and strength.

michelformika It’s interesting to note the changing attitudes towards disabled people over the years. Here in the 1960s they were still clearly regarded as objects of pity, whereas now of course we know that that they are just regular people who just need a bit of extra help to enable them to be a part of mainstream society (I’m sorry if I phrased that clumsily, I mean no offence to anyone). In fact, as an example, at the time of this broadcast there had already been two Paralympic events with another one taking place the very same year of 1968, at which America won a total of 99 medals, placing them 1st in the rankings - just 8 fewer than the regular Olympics. And of course in the 50 years since then, many people with disabilities have been able to take their rightful place in society, instead of being hidden away. I realise of course that things are still not perfect, but surely no-one can argue that we have come a long way since this programme was first aired.

When Christina got a part in Marcus Welby, MD, Joan went insane because she had long wanted to appear in that show. Then, after Christina got another guest role in a television series called The Sixth Sense, wouldn't you know, Joan appeared in that show not long after. Of course, no one can forget (or stop laughing at) an over 60 Joan substituting for the hospitalized Christina in her 28 year old soap opera role. Its obvious that Joan was annoyed that her daughter was on TV. She called her up there because Jerry told her that he knew Christina was there. So Joan had no choice. Notice how she rushed her off the stage? I believe Christina however she may have stretched the truth on some stuff. Still i do believe Joan was abusive. I watched an old interview and she mentioned her daughter giving her problems. Normally someone wouldnt telling the world negative things about their own kids regardless if its true. She sounds like a very self absorbed person.

I think she looks hurt, not annoyed. JC had some problems, no doubt, especially with her two oldest kids. Some the usual kind of things, some her fault, some her kids'. Christina lied as much as she told the truth in my opinion.
@jeffkiper8199

I agree with you on your point, about there being either, psychological or physical abuse, but not to the degree that the book or movie states. Lets face it, from what I've read, Joan's own mother, Anna Bell, was abusive and seemed to resent her. I think this might have something to do with the father abandoning the family right around the time of Joan's birth. I think, even though she may have loved her, she couldn't help but feel that Joan was the catalyst for his abandonment. How would Joan know how to be a loving, nurturing and supportive parent, when her own mother was none of these things. She had a rotten role model. Your comment about Crawford being a self absorbed woman, is probably true to a certain extent. I think she craved the love and attention she didn't get from her own childhood, and took the audiences love and admiration for her as a substitute for it. Even though she presented herself as a tough, confidant and self- reliant woman, I believe she was extremely insecure and needed peoples approval to feel good about herself. But I have to point out, if normally someone wouldn't say negative things about a family member, even if it's true, then why is alright for Christina to do so. She was nearly forty years old, when she came out with these claims. If these horrific abuses went on, why didn't she come out with them, ten to twenty years earlier, and not right after her mother's death, and finding out she was disinherited. Which leads me to believe it was for fame and money, and not this claim that it was to draw awareness to child abuse, which seems to me like a perpetrated excuse for writing the book. I'm not one of those people that just make idle statements about her. I have read several sources of varying information over the years, and have tried to come to an objective analysis from comparison of them. If my lengthy comment suggests that I'm trashing your opinion, that's not my intention. I just like an intelligent debate.

Jeff Kiper I think she was a disciplinarian and had a temper. I think Christina was a troubled child. Nothing you read from Joan's closest friends points to anything more than that. Not even the drinking. She drank but was never seen as drunk by any of her friends. And they all drank. Back then holding your liquor was a serious charecter trait. Does Spencer Tracy get dragged through the dirt for admitting he was drunk constantly for 25 years? People are incapable of being fair to Joan because of a book that was written after her friends failed to testify for Christina's inheritance lawsuit.

People who only reference “Mommie dearest” really don’t know Joan and I feel sorry for them honestly. It’s sad that one of the finest women and actresses of the 20th century was reduced to a silly camp film from 1980….Faye Dunaway hammed up that performance so much that it was as if Joan was actually missing from the performance and all that was there was the “straw man” equivalent of what modern audiences wanted to believe ….if anything Joan was more polite and even keeled and very very aware of her diction and candor. She was not some histrionic whacko. She was strict and mildly OCD with cleanliness for sure as she was beaten by nuns in a boarding school and forced to clean 15 rooms for wealthier girls to earn her keep. She joined a traveling dance troupe in Chicago and was spotted by an MGM scout who brought her to Hollywood and effectively metamorphosed her into Joan Crawford circa 1925. And from about 29-72 she had the highest highs and the lowest lows but always remained gracious and loyal to her fans. I’m not saying Christina didn’t have a hard time in that house but there’s two sides to every story. And the one aspect left from Christina’s memoir was her own behavior -the reader doesn’t see that. The willfulness or mischievousness of her childhood transgressions. Kids can be brats and Joan was a career oriented woman who demanded perfection-not always an easy personality for sure but can easily be translated as “abuse” when it’s merely just “tough love”. It’s a complicated situation to evaluate. It’s just a shame she’s remembered for wire hangers and not Grand Hotel and Sadie McKee and Sudden Fear
