Somehow Garbo was above the jalousi of her contemporary female movie stars. Everyone was in ave of her. Perhaps because she was so elusive and inaccessible.

Yes, actresses of to day should really study how actresses in the 30's 40's and 50's used their voices and way of speaking to enhance their attraction and personality. People like Garbo, Dietrich, Bacall, Monroe... I once saw a Dick Cavett show on KZbin, where he was interviewing Janis Joplin, and in came Gloria Swanson looking wonderful and a perfect diva. Overshadowing Janis completely, and spoke with the most beautiful soft melodic voice. Janis, 44 years her junior, looked like raggedy Ann in comparison (no offense Janis:).

5:13 Joan hit the nail right on the head, all the way back then. That's why Hollywood has lost a lot of its prestige, actors make themselves too available across every platform, so there's no mystery. It's too much with the house tours, the makeup and skincare routines, the what's in my bag's

Garbo photographed timelessly. If you look at her face beyond the period style hair and makeup you realise she could be a supermodel at any time in the last 100 years. Her features are so classic and so perfect that she remains iconic. Joan was iconic herself but in a different, very American, way. One feels Joan desired or needed the validation of being a star, Garbo didn’t want it and walked away. Right at that time Sweden produced another astonishing beauty, a totally different character, Ingrid Bergman. What was wonderful about Garbo is she did walk away, as far as I know, she gave no interviews and wrote no memoirs despite living on for decades and decades. That takes incredible self-discipline.

THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. GREAT VIDEO. THE BLACK+WHITE MOVIES. THE GOLDEN ERA. THE SILENT MOVIES. THE TALKIES. EVERYTHING WAS DONE WITH SUCH SUPERB WORKMANSHIP. GREAT TALENT. GREAT CLASS. GREAT STYLE.GREAT MANNERISM. GREAT VOCABULARY. THESE VIDEOS SHOW US THAT. I DON'T SEE THIS HAPPENING AFTER 100 YEARS WITH THE HORRIFIC JUNK OF TODAY IN MOVIES, MUSIC ETC.

The sad part is, ask many people today, 40 or 50 years old or younger, and they have no idea who Greta Garbo was. But not only Garbo, many big names from Hollywood in the 30s and 40s seem forgotten by most of the people today. I'm 60, and was talking to a friend of mine who was in her 40s, and she had no idea who Barbara Stanwyck was! It's really sad.

In terms of their "craft," Greta and Joan both got lucky breaks. They both photographed well. The difference is, Garbo considered it a one-off, and Joan built a decades-long career.

If I am allowed to say something of Miss Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, her "mystery" could be described as follow: she remained the girl of Blekingegatan 32, she didn't give a damn to fame, she was a hardworking person, she valued simplicity and sincerity, she was never a slave to the motion picture machinery. SHE DEFENDED HER PRIVACY. All this could could be a mystery... for the Hollywood film industry mentality. GREAT GRETA❤️❤️❤️❤️

@@lynntownsend4457 the entire meeting was probably a complete lie. It did probably happen to another actress and Joan just stole it for her own. Read the best of everything blog. Joan complained to another actor how incredibly rude Garbo was to her. So, I doubt Garbo said that to her.
