As the summer doldrums settle in over Manhattan, James Kalm makes a pilgrimage to Chelsea to partake in the pleasures of observing paintings and drawings by an American Master. Joan Mitchell is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding members of the "second generation" of Abstract Expressionists. With her subtle use of color, vigorous brushwork, and emphatic facture Mitchell creates a context within which all subsequent Ab-Exers be they male or female must be judged. Having on 13 May, 2014, at Christie's New York attained the highest price ever for a female artist at auction of $11,925,000, it is fitting that these two exhibitions should give painting lovers a chance to reevaluate this vital and influential artist.
