As the summer doldrums settle in over Manhattan, James Kalm makes a pilgrimage to Chelsea to partake in the pleasures of observing paintings and drawings by an American Master. Joan Mitchell is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding members of the "second generation" of Abstract Expressionists. With her subtle use of color, vigorous brushwork, and emphatic facture Mitchell creates a context within which all subsequent Ab-Exers be they male or female must be judged. Having on 13 May, 2014, at Christie's New York attained the highest price ever for a female artist at auction of $11,925,000, it is fitting that these two exhibitions should give painting lovers a chance to reevaluate this vital and influential artist. Adam Road provides a musical intro to this program.

These are quite gorgeous expressive paintings melting the abstract and the figurative - also the small pastels showed how beautifully she expresses an experience - sensual, raw and sophistcated at the same time - they are also recognizable and mystical at the same time - very beautifull - a pleasure to watch = but again please remember to keep the camera more calmly - there is so much movement in each of her mark making that is take away the strength of the beautifull work if you move around without stranding still - looking = but still great show = thank you so much for sharing

Another fantastic video that has helped me appreciate Abstract art or I guess Abstract Expressionism, it is helping me to loosen up my own artwork, even though I am a figurative painter I am concentrating more on the object of colours and the application of oil paint on canvas than on the subject I'm painting or referring from. All these wonderful arrays of colours, patterns and the different ways of applying paint, that I have been discovering with my own work, I can honestly say have been heavily and gladly influenced by watching your shows! Thank you James. I have said in other comments (on other videos you have uploaded), that (even though I have bee making artwork for thirty odd years,) it has been within the last two years, that I have felt free and happy with my work. I'm being lead through some unknown journey and I am enjoying what new sights and discoveries I am gaining on the way!! Again Thank you James. I love Joan Mitchell's drawings, they loosely remind me of Frank Auerbach's work... In a more sparser way...? Thank you James and Thank you Kate. Cheer, Paul

I'm certainly no painter, but these works look like top drawer material. I can't imagine the level of confidence you would need to work in this manner: the paintings look improvised and tightly controlled at the same time. Each canvas is entirely different and surprising, and yet seem somehow punched out all at once and inevitable at the same time. Thanks for this video.

A painter worth emulating for great practice with color, spatial illusions, and damb fine artwork. Its hard not to create one all your own but, and I say "but", to truly make it look authentic it would have to be practiced over and over, day after year, year after day. Still, you would only be creating art of your own.

this is great; I'm a latecomer to this as to much else, perhaps to everything. The only NY connections I have were to The Met retrospective of Lucian Freud I attended after high school graduation in 1992, another trip to stay in the ASU loft in mid-town in 2000 to visit galleries, and by happenstance I met Carlo Pittore in a bus out of Port Authority in '98 then went to Maine to visit him in 2003 a couple years before he died. We were only acquaintances although I did draw with the community on a number of occasions in his two studios; I have always worked alone in obscurity far from NY. I will check to see if you're still doing this Mr. Kalm, and I'll subscribe. Now.

one of the great painters of ANY school, sir. She never considered herself an 'action' painter because she sat back and studied what she she do next on the canvas.

As always its a pleasure to see the shows - interesting in many ways - I love both the overviews and the close ups but i think you should take Care not to move the camera quite so much temember to make small stops - it would make it much better- so please stop breath and then move calmly to a new point you will focus on

Its wonderfull to be able to follow there uploads - very interesting - I sill want very much that you stod still a moment with the total painting in focus before you “ move in for details” and take Care not to move too quickly - but in spite of the very Shakespeare camera movement it is very interesting to follow -

'female painter' - think about what that means. Do you know any artists (living, friends?) who would say 'I'm a female painter', 'I'm a female artist'. Maybe you could refer to artists who are women as 'artists' in the future? Thank you.
