Joan Rivers at her best in 1982. Heidi Abromowitz, "Can We Talk?" -- it's all here.

I think what I appreciate most about Joan is that her mind was FAST. She wasn't thinking of the next joke. She was setting up something five or ten minutes down the line to come back to. There's something to be said for rehearsing your act until you can recite it rapidly, but making it conversational is an entirely different thing. You can't plan how an audience member looks and build jokes on that reliably. She built a mental warehouse of go-to's that she could tap into as soon as the opportunity arose and string them back to back to almost leave you breathless with how fast the jokes were coming. Great mind. Great lady.

***** She had what i would call brutal honest comedy she skewered everyone..George Carlin had the same kind of comedy..i can't recall what stand up it was,but in one of them a politician was sitting in the upper balcony and Carlin went at him it got so embarrassing for this politician that he and his family left the theater..it was great.

@@mja91352 only people with no sense of humor thought she was obnoxious ; similar to the same bunch of big whining babies we've had in the past 10 or so years , interrupting the show , not allowing the comic to continue until they explain why their feelings are so hurt or why they're so angry about what the comic just said . They need to stop these attempts to prevent the comic from doing what they do best . If people don't like certain comics who are all too honest , they simply don't have to watch them .

cattrio In this case, cattrio, I think the angle is "bandwagon cliches disguised as provacative thoughts". Joan Rivers wasn't brave or "trailblazing" or anything like that. She was a vanilla feminist who appealed to shallow cliches and liberal strawmen for bucks and fame. You know, sort of like the way a televangelist sells religion and healing.

Had the pleasure of seeing Joan at a casino near Seattle less than a year ago. I didn't know she was going to be there, I was just there by chance... 2nd row ticket was available.... so hey... why not ! Had my hair (what was left of it), all tucked up into a baseball cap. "Thanks for dressing up ! Take off the damn hat." Well, being bald on top and not having a haircut for a few months... all the unwashed frizziness of "after the gym" unwashed hair came out. "Ladies and Gentlemen, Bozo the Clown ! Give him a big round of applause !". Insulted by Joan. It was a good day. ;-)

it took her passing for me to even find out about her comedy (really did enjoy the 1967 ed sullivan bit and I had absolutely no idea about all the guest hosting on late night). really enjoy how she interacted with the audience. i've gleaned from several clips her obsession with getting older/and her lack of breasts. i suppose that is why she turned to plastic surgery. i hope she wasn't really down on herself but i suppose that's what makes a comedian/enne. a sadness/darkness (like our friend Robin) anyway, i hope the surgeries made her happy and she relished in her success and knew her place in the history of tv/comedy. 81 is a pretty good run! most def. rip joan!
