The big hair, clothes and accessories- the juxtaposition of how dressed up she looked and then what flew out of her mouth was fabulous! She was a first class show woman. I agree that she was always an attractive woman because she took care of herself and dressed elegantly. However, some of her best jokes were the ones where she made fun of herself. I think people related to her more because she did that type of humor. We could all see some of our own insecurities and laugh at them.

So I lean to the idea that it was a creative judgment she made- she had an amazing eye for all kinds of things- but of course I'm just guessing and would love to know the real story from anyone who was there.
