I saw her ten years later in the Semiramide at the Chicago Lyric. She was just as spectacular. The voice simply flowed out into the huge Lyric auditorium and enveloped you in a great wave of beautiful sound. One could almost feel the walls reverberating to the huge sound.

I've often wondered whether it was La Scala that proposed SEMIRAMIDE, or whether it was Bonynge's master plan to unearth it, along with BEATRICE DI TENDA and La Scala simply fell in with his repertoire proposals, wanting Sutherland desperately, on any terms? To that end, did Bonynge propose BEATRICE to the American Opera Society for the concert performances that marked her New York debut, using them as a 'trial run' to get the role firmly in her voice, knowing that she was going to sing it in Milan some months later? I know they quibbled with conductor Gui on the edition to use, and he was replaced by Votto when Bonynge refused to let Sutherland sing a different version than that which had been a success in New York. Back to SEMIRAMIDE - in some ways I think it was Sutherland's finest role, showcasing her legendary technique to perfection.

Non è così. Bonynge non contava nulla per la Scala ma la Scala copio' il MET per far debuttare la Joan a Milano. Se poi si precisa che la Sutherland canto' per l'ultima volta alla Scala La Scala inviò lo spartito e la Sutherland/Bonynge lo rispedì a Milano con correzioni e variazioni che la Scala accettò. Arrivata la SUT.....a Milano , Guy che era il direttore dell'orchesta e allora responsabile, presentò alla Joan un testo che tagliava la caballetta finale dicendo che a suo avviso Bellini voleva cambiare il finale con un concertato ma non lo aveva fatto. La Sutherland rifiutò assolutamente il cambiamento ma Guy non volle rinunciare al finale da lui preparato. Pertanto la Beatrice fu spostata di mesi e affidata a Votto e la Sutherland debuttò pertanto con LUCIA.

@@dodotassi I tuoi dati su BEATRICE sono corretti. Tuttavia, Bonynge parlava per Sutherland. Erano essenzialmente la stessa persona. Se volevano Sutherland, allora Bonynge certamente "significava qualcosa" per La Scala, che lo sapessero o no! Mi chiedo ancora se Bonynge abbia proposto SEMIRAMIDE o se sia stata un'idea della Scala?

@@delosmike2030 Sutherland parlava su suggerimento di Bonynge. Non si sa se la Beatrice sia stata decisa dalla Scala o suggerita. E' probabile che la Scala invitando Joan le abbia chiesto cosa preferisse cantare. Bonynge era ritenuto dalla Scala un pessimo direttore al punto che .........1964 Joan ha cantato Lucia alla Scala. Ultima recita e Ghiringhelli sovrintendente andò in camerino e le disse "signora per il prossimo anno....." Lei " mi dispiace ma sono occupata tutto l'anno" .....LUI " ma lei viene con noi a Mosca per Lucia......." Lei " non importa , vado al mare" e Lucia la cantò a Mosca la Scotto. Joan tornò nel 1966 per Don Giovanni. Ultima recita il 30-4-1966. Lei pretendeva cantare diretta da Bonynge come ormai succedeva in tutti i teatri. La Scala non voleva Bonynge e la Sutherland mai piu' cantò alla Scala. Neppure un concerto. La Caballè invece cantò molte volte anche con pessimi direttori, davanti ai quali Bonynge era Toscanini.........La Scala anni dopo fece una proposta con direzione Bonynge.......Poi mesi di silenzio. Joan telefonò e le fu risposto che l'opera non si faceva perchè l'orchestra era impegnata con Abbato al teatro LIRICO (non la Scala). La Sutherland ha trionfato in tutto il mondo. Ha fatto al Met una delle piu' belle recite di Norma della storia con Horne e Bergonzi e la Scala ha perduto dal 1966 un dei migliori soprano della storia dell'opera.

@@dodotassi As much as we are indebted to Richard Bonynge for directing Joan in the right direction with her voice, I think it was an unwise and frankly foolish idea for Joan to only sing when her husband was conducting. She could have learned much from the great conductors of the day, was it pure coincidence that her 1959 Lucia with the great Serafin was almost certainly her finest performance in that role?

@@paullewis2413 Bonynge è un buon direttore. Ottimo per il belcanto. Joan aveva bisogno e non solo lei , di un direttore che aiutasse il cantante belcantista. Quando fece LUCIA alla Scala nel 1964 mi disse : avevo davanti un muro di orchestra. Penso che la NORMA di New York diretta da Bonynge sia bellissima.
