The gorgeous autographed photo that Dame Joan sent me, in response to my fan letter, is the one I have on permanent display. She will remain my idol until I die and her recording legacy takes pride of place in my collection.A voice of the spheres, indeed.

Vini you are a genius! I love how you find these wonderful things. Thank you. I had not heard this before and JS sounds so intelligent and charming, and as always so honest. “I’m too fat.” LOL Love her.

Thank you. A lovely interview. Frank, funny and honest. The comment about Callas, "I adored her." Lots of younger people keep saying that there was great rivalry and animosity between them. If they all could hear this it would shut them up for good. Those of us who were around when both were at their height of fame remember that at no time did either mention the other in unfriendly terms. It was mutual respect and admiration.

I agree. But honestly, these questions about Callas annoys me. It's 1972! Joan is a tremendous artist with such career and knowledge. She could (the interviewer) have focused the questions only about Joan. In other hand, it's nice to hear one artist's speech about other.

@@JoanSutherlandFan It was ever thus, Vini, I expect the interviewer was hoping that she would make a comment about The American press calling Callas "The Tigress" because of her reputation for being difficult. Dame Joan was considered to be the "good" soprano except for one occasion when she walked out of a production because of artistic difference with a conductor. The British press had a field day and said that "Sutherland Does a Callas." Oh! we did laugh.

Callas herself also refuted the rivalry and they were photographed together on several occasion. Besides, Sutherland also wrote in her autobiography that there was no rivalry, on the contrary Callas had been gracious to her and sent her flowers for some of her performances.

@@kbhprinsesse Maria did send sweet notes and flowers, particularly before an important debut. They were never rivals, and there was mutual respect, despite what some contemporary Callas fans may choose to believe.

Sutherland was singing Lucia at La Scala in 1961. The biggest bouquet in her dressing room contained a hand-written note from Maria Callas; "I'm sorry that I cannot be with you tonight except in spirit Joan, Carissima. But I pray and know that you will have a marvelous success! Onwards always to triumph! Maria Callas"

Callas was acting with her voice. That's why people of all generations admire her.

Fascinating. Thanks so much for this interview which I'd never heard. Where do you find these gems? She does point out how great singers are in effect athletes and underlines the physical aspects of singing. Funny jokes about Papagena and Butterfly! Never knew they planned Stuarda with Horne originally.
