I loved this show when I was a kid!!!

Joan Sutherland always loved appearing in operetta and had a real comic gift to go with that stupendous voice. As far as I know this is the only performance by Joy Mammen on you tube? A pity as she was such a fine artist and a reputed teacher at the Royal Academy.

I've not found any documentation that she had ever performed this work on stage. She had done recordings of it, and she obviously was well versed in it though.

Isso é verdade caro amigo. Ouvi ela mesma dizendo, numa entrevista, que gostaria de ter cantado Don Pasquale. Então por que não cantou, não é mesmo? A Decca deveria ter gravado com ela e o Pavarotti, ao invés da gravação que fez em 1965.

Entertaining! I auditioned for mezzo Monica Sinclair once. But this is not the right Offenbach role for Sutherland. A soprano role like Garielle "la Vie Parisienne" perhaps. La Schneider the original player did Ines in "la Favorite" Donizetti (soprano). Her big roles in Offenbach were either soprano who can sing low or mezzo who can sing high. Sutherland swaps lines iwth the tenor Piquillo! Suzanne Lafaye is unsurpassed in this role which was recorded complete conducted by Igor Markevitch but is sometimes available (KZbin?) abridged. the Jacques Offenbach Society
