In the early 1980's I was an audio electronics student in East London and was shown around Trevor Horn's amazing Sarm East studios at the bottom of Brick Lane. Whilst we were seated at the huge console listening to Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Girls straight off the multitrack, a woman came in, cursing and rummaging through the studio bins. Once she stormed off I naively said to the studio engineer, "Wow, that cleaner was in a bad mood". His tart reply "That wasn't the cleaner, that's Joan Armatrading, she's obviously lost something important". Never more felt such a fool and for having jumped to a terrible conclusion. Sorry Joan!

If I'm being honest, this is not my fav direction for a Joan Armatrading song. A little bit commercial in structure and the chorus seems disjointed to me. Do not misunderstand me; one of my main attractions to Joan's music is her quirky chord pairings, sometimes odd time signature changes and melodies that can make you work to dig them. She's incredible and this is no sleight, not even a sleight of hand, just an opinion.
