He was NOT sectioned by his wife. He was sectioned by a doctor and this was ran past other doctors and professionals, his wife signed to be the person that can talk on his behalf as someone who knows him best, SHE DID NOT SECTION HIM. writing that as the title gives the wrong impression of how all this works and scares people into thinking someone can get them sectioned against their will. This is what true burnout does to people, I know Heston would have also struggled all his life with his Bipolar and adhd but burnout is something that can happen to any of us. Burnout isn’t just exhaustion and then you’re fine after a little holiday, burnout is utterly fucking devastating to your mind and body it’s essentially a physical and psychological breakdown where you have exhausted yourself to the point where you can no longer function normally and all of a sudden even everyday mundane tasks seem impossible its a complete shutdown of your body. Burnout cripples so many brilliant minds and creative talents before they even got any glory from their hard work because we work in industries that are practically whipping us to death with their impossible demands. We are only human we aren’t machines and if we don’t know our limitations and learn to say no to these pressures our bodies will do it for us. You can recover eventually if you start looking after yourself properly with some support but it can take months sometimes even years to get back to a good place and even then some of the damage may never be fully reparable, its much better if you can recognise it early and do something about it.

Mental illness is terrifying for the sufferer and the friends and family around them. I had a brother who started behaving bizarre, unpredictable, alien to us. He walked around naked, smashed things up, and told us he heard evil voices. He told us he saw his doppelganger one day. Was diagnosed schizophrenic and put on some American drug in '90s. I talked about some of this in school but got laughed at and outcast by "friends". It was shame at the time, also my mother's alcoholism. "Just deal with it". Then my brother died under the care of mental health workers. Just dropped dead of a heart attack while they took him out walking in the countryside. 29 years old. My drinking was there but got worse. Imagined revenge on the mental health people for killing him. Screwed a lot of things up since. I never trusted anybody for years. I know these were delusions or my own mental illness. I am glad there's less of a stigma nowadays and that honesty and enlightenment, illuminating the darkness, is the way.

This is such a brave thing to do. And so helpful to others going through similar stuff. It’s a selfless act of help to others, to show himself this honestly. That’s a truly empathetic act of kindness on his part. Huge respect to him.

Its actually related to his diet, its whats triggering his BPD. There is mounting evidence that mental health disorders are directly associated with the food we eat. In many cases it can be reversed. Huge respect for Heston and his wife for speaking publicly about this. As a mental health nurse I've looked after patients who have been diagnosed with bipolar later in life (40s and above) - and as a person who was recently diagnosed with bipolar at age 48- this disorder can easily fly under the radar for years until the symptoms become extreme that the risk of harm to self is high. The stigma around mental illness needs to be eradicated so that folks access help for their mental health as easily and often as they do for any physical ailments because just like physical sickness, the outcomes for managing mental illness are far better when detected early.

Very brave to speak out about these conditions and his experiences. People in positions like his speaking about mental health will help lots of other men in particular to see there’s no shame in getting the help they might need. It’s ridiculous in 2024 that there is still stigma related to mental health. If more people spoke about it the world would be an easier place for everyone.

The brighter the sun, the darker the shadow. I've been wondering for years where Heston's shadow was - asking myself the question, without providing an answer: I loathe gratuitous speculation, which too many people have the idiocy and nerve to do. Heston provided the answer himself, with the precious help of his wife. Hats off to both.
