In our home, we tell our kids they are a part of a family and family members help each other. We don’t pay them weekly, but occasionally I’ll just give them some money. Their workload has gradually increased each year as applicable like you said. Some of their initial chores were feeding the dog and giving her fresh water, emptying the dishwasher, tidying their rooms, and taking their clothes to the laundry room. I had a couple of wise mothers with children that were older, responsible, and self-sufficient advise me that I should be working myself out of a job. These ladies had made goals that their kids would start adult life having useful life skills. This seemed so wonderful to me because in college I met so many peers who couldn’t care for themselves. There were a couple of girls I knew who cried as a result of being overwhelmed with basic tasks like cooking something simple. This one sweet girl in my dorm was washing her laundry with ONLY fabric softener! 😆 Anyway, life skills - they’re important! So, currently, at 11 years old and 13 years old, they do their laundry, cook simple things, care for all of the pets’ basic needs, clean their rooms, wash dishes, help with home projects, etc. AND just to be clear and not to give any false impressions - it’s hard! It doesn’t happen without parental oversight. There is whining, and there is reminding. 😂 But they are learning what it takes to care for themselves and others. So, I’m with you! The BIGGEST and BEST reward they receive is from being in a family with parents that love them and teach them.

I love this. We struggle with my step kids because life at their moms is sooooo different than at our house. We want them to learn to take care of themselves. We are getting ready to move and they are gonna have their own rooms now so more responsibility. I started with them washing dishes and one girl did amazing the other did about 1/3 and refused to dry them before going back to moms.

My son is 4 and he just started doing chores this year. I made a list of things that he can do like making his bed, feeding the dog, putting away laundry and dishes etc. and every day he marks off the stuff that he’s done and he gets a quarter per chore. Some days he gets 1.25 and others nothing, we mostly leave it up to him in order to not make it a power struggle and keep it fun while he’s leaning about responsibility. I more so started chores to teach him about money, counting, saving and spending.

I started my kids young, every birthday they got a new chore. When they hit 10, they got two new chores. They got to pick off the many things. No one got paid unless they wanted to earn $. Then they got paid for extra chores if there current chores are done. They also learned to clean or do things right because if they didn’t then they earned another chore. My kids are 31, 26 and 20 now and have stated that they felt that helped them with their self esteem. Now I’m not saying that they were happy about it at the time. 🤣🤣😘. You have a wonderful family. You’ll do what works well for them. 🙌‼️❤️

My kids have tasks they are expected to do. The older one cares for the chickens, feed, water, get eggs daily. She also unloads the dishwasher. The little one puts her clothes away, wipes windows, and cleans surfaces. They get an allowance, $25 every 2 weeks but $10 goes into savings and $5 goes into their charity account. They both have Greenlight debit cards and we love them! Teaches them how to manage their money and save for things they want.

Yasss just what i needed this morning to give my motivation a kick start! Here in Texas my kids have only 3 more days left of school! So excited for that! Our teachers have been so incredible this year and i know they're ready for this summer vacation to get started! We have a couple of trips planned, and tons of activities to keep 4 kiddos busy! No allowance here! My kids have daily chores. My kids are 11, 9, 3, and 2. From oldest to youngest they all have a couple of things that are expected from them. We also reward them for good grades or for going above and beyond to do things without being asked.

First, congrats to Ms. Amber Brooks!! Regarding the odd animals in the yard while doing things, yeah....no me either! I will say my parents were borderline poor. They had just enough money to pay bills and put food on the table. We never got an allowance. We were expected to clean our rooms, do the dishes, and clean the house as best we could. We also had to mow our front and back lawn. Because our neighbor was gone loads of time during the week for his job, he would buy us some foods as a thank you to my mom watching his house to ensure no one did anything dumb while he was gone. Our “allowance” was sort of getting nicer food choices from when our neighbor bought food just to have something. But, if we wanted that food, we also had to go wash his dishes and vacuum the house / dust. It was an odd situation, but that neighbor was so helpful and a blessing. Had not been for that person, we may have had to sell the house and move to an apartment. Tough times. This was in the late 80’s to mid 90’s. No dishwashers for lots of the houses in my old neighborhood. No tablets, computers, cordless vacuum, anything. LOL...true “stone age” type concepts. I totally understand taking time to truly think on things before doing them. We own our first house, and I’m the one staying home to do lots of things. Once I get a moment to study and complete a certification, I can then get a job. Then, we’ll go researching for better floors, a larger and nicer fridge / freeze thing, and a back screen door. We can afford it now, but I want to wait until I have a good job, and we save more money as to enjoy nice, high tech things. Our house has really dark hard wood floors (they could be manufactured wood, but just looks like hard wood), and one of these days next year, I’m going to research to swap for the light gray / light brown color. It’ll lighten our house up, and not show the dirt on the floors so easily. Love your content as always.

bleach in your flowers?! We do however reward them for good grades. That is their 'job' in our eyes and their hard work will be rewarded. My husband, stepson, and I just got back from a short (3 1/2 day) trip to Florida to visit family. We ended up going to a Tampa Rays baseball game, to Universal Studios where I rode a rollercoaster for the very first (and last) time in my life, and we went out to eat at all kinds of fun restaurants ~~ Cracker Barrel, Hard Rock Cafe, Bubba Gumps, and Waffle House. Then I came home and quit my job ~~ it was not completely unexpected as I have been contemplating leaving for several years. It just feels so good to have the monkey off my back. I may end up going back and spending some additional time in Florida to help my sister in law do some major house cleaning and organizing.

It’s funny how families handle allowance. My husband and I were pretty much raised the same way so it seemed easier. Our kids had “chores” to do regardless. But as they got older, I think about 6 when they really understood what money was, I wanted to instill in them the need to “save”. So I encouraged them to save part of it with the condition that 25% of it went into their bank account. And for each time they did that, I told them I would match what they saved. I continued that on for forever, even with Easter money and things like that. It worked. They are still savers and I think it instilled a sense of responsibility that they are passing on to their own kids. 👍🏻

With lockdown kast year, they amount of points....I need Ireland to open quickly!!!

My kids don't have specific chores, but I do have them help me out on big cleaning days, but they are expected to keep their room clean and pick up they're own toys etc. When they've been good and helped me out a lot I basically split all the change in my purse between them for their money boxes. When I was a teen my mum used to give me £20 a month pocket money, but I had to keep my room clean and me and brother would take turn doing the dishes through the week

We do 6$ a week that’s not tied to anything. That way they can learn to spend, save, etc as they want. This keeps us from buying them things throughout the year. They can save up for things they want. But they are expected to do family contributions(we don’t say chores) that way they maybe more likely to do it. Family contributions are like putting your clothes in the hamper out of the floor. Putting your dishes in the sink. Picking up your toys etc. my kids are 6 and 8. I’m hoping this summer to add things like loading the dishwasher or maybe doing some laundry...

Ok a bit of a tip use totes and label the projects diy, placevin papers. Pics, tools, color samples, info post- it's like - cement order by 2 to be able to do afternoon truck haul if Saturday, Sunday closed. Those bits & bobs of diy tasks from large renovation finishes yourself, & tiny paint projects, actual yearly projects you do the same diy redo each year like paint the shed, color choices, finishes, roof material for storms. & make a maintenance log book of your home, when you make changes, list of handy& carpenters, have work labor done, do updates put the info, code names, swatches, make a sample board with all furnishings so you remember how u setup your display, furn, details or a pic of the supplies you needed into that book. As you progress every year, every month pull the tote projects you can do in your timeframe, remember to look at your pin pages pics in pinterest I do one for every project because I have several choices of styles I may choose, & you cant remember it all. Grab your maintenance diy book you filled from former projects & with that filled tote or totes, can be tiny to huge depends on contents you gathered. Make choices, align the best project determined by supplies, ability physically, weather, & time frame. Then start decisions choose if you keep the plan you worked on or revise it, get those essential extra changes ordered or tools in that week or so. The do the project, update maintenance book, save only the used samples. Explanations for tiny damage. If in a year you dont need saved supplies, purge, & start on a new design. Not every house needs white walls and minimalist furniture coverings, or pick at walmart our style throw it togetger decisions. Or everything's white so we can change up accessories. Trends change, farmhouse is out new trends of color come in. As you fill these bins together you make your choices & decide just be aware of who makes choices, if family, kid projects, spouse project, guys project, let those participating choose items in your budget, but let them know supplies change if we cant get this color, this fabric, by the timeframe and it discontinues. Then we will have to choose again when this tote is opened. It's so difficult to get projects started, gather all pieces, remember how we did it at the past house. That we get overwhelmed. This way you choose cost, time, weather, & energy if your participants those choices are key to getting things done. My mom once called me do u have the tile picked out for me, then shed call my sister did we decide on blue cause I see red in this tote. This way all participating are on the same design, & cost level. In 2020 we now have shortages & model find issues. Make it a smooth, make it fun, make it less choices, less daunting tasks. & that log maintenance binder book put in pockets to hold relevant warranties, instruction booklets, pic of the appliances etc fir your homeowners replacement insurance

I don’t have kids but as a kid I had chores and got $20 a week from middle school up. This was for me to learn about management because school game for example, I had to pay for. They took me to bank and opening a checking account for mr at 13, I felt so special! Lol it also gave me drive because I wanted stuff so I started a job at 14 doing papers and then 15 video store etc. to earn money and such. I’m a for sure proponent, but we are all diff and all kids learn diff. Helped me relate to real world so to speak.

I found the last sense so encouraging especially because im a single parent !! Thank you ❤❤ and I really enjoyed this gave me the motivation to get some things done this evening when my kids go to bed 😊 its 6pm in the UK so half an hour and they will be going to bed and I will wash my floors and clean my bathrooms. I have hoovered from top to bottom already and I have a 3 story house with 4 bedrooms lol so that was hard going today lol so you gave me more motivation to get it all done today lol Can i please ask how you lost 35pounds as I had noticed but just curious what kind of work outs/eating habits your following? Any way have a great weekend all xoxo

I am currently 15 and ever since I was around 8 years old my mom has us tidy the house everyday. So we picked up after ourselves, washed dishes, put our clothes away everyday. We never got an allowance though lol. She agreed that your allowance was having a home, food, and love.

We have things we need to do around our house. We'll paint before changing out flooring and do any touch up needed after that.

My kids have 3 weeks left until summerbreak, they have home studies every other day so they are home alot anyway. We dont have any travel plans, we dont usually travel but I hope we can get to another city and do something, we will se what they say about the pandemic first 🥴 there is a hotel that I love in a big city here in sweden, I cant spell the city's name, its called Göteborg in swedish. The hotel is right by the water, and I love the feeling there, and you take a boat and go over to the other side where there is a amusement park🙂we have about 4 hours there 🙂
