OK, his performance is spectacular, but I think that somebody had too much fun and got carried away with the editing, so much so that his beautiful choreography is shown almost a half of it. Too many cuts in his performance... there, I said it. Beautiful performance though (loved the singer as well)

I thought that I was being overly fussy until I read these comments and realised that I was not alone in feeling that the director/editor went a bit mad with all the footage at their disposal! What a shame. This dance and Joaquin Cortes are exquisite and need no extra production techniques to up the intensity of the dance. From what was available it was clear that the choreography was in perfect sync with the band. And then it ended so abruptly! Spoilt by the director!

What a pity the over done camera work prevents us from clearly seeing and enjoying Mr. Cortes's fine work in this piece which values fancy camera work to simple, clear capture of his artistry. The camera cannot have primacy over the subject it is to capture. This isn't about fancy angles close ups and edits: it's about the dance. So many fine works of dance are ruined by over eager camera folk and directors who apparently do not trust the dance to hold our attention by itself.

This music & performance are in my blood & i cant explain how it affects me within! My great grandmother was Spanish Basque & when I was a little girl she would get out this large flat piece of Zinc metal & put it on her kitchen floor for me to dance on with my Tap shoes on. Shed clap the Rhythm & sing in that ullulating voice & id go into frenzies of tapping, heels like quick silver, my hair flying like the wild horses of the Camargue That was 60yrs ago & that music comes from within you. The best spanish dancers ive ever seen were NOT taught, it was just there inside you & just awaiting your conciousness of its presence! Beautiful, really the essence of the passion of the spirit Thank you 🇬🇧👧

The way the singers,wail is from the Arabs but that is all. It has various influences. Islam is extremely modest, they don't dance. This is highly flamboyant. I heard flamenco is an improvised art from. All the singers, dancers, musicians learn about a number of very specific rhythms, by clapping them first.Before they learn to play instruments. That's how they follow each other. They dance the bull fight. The struggle between life and death is a kind of poetry to them. Its also their particular sombre brand of catholism i feel.

The camera works is horrid, it's a pure torture. And such contempt for the audience. They won't let us decide where to look, at the dancer's feet or the musicians hands. Why not just stay still and let us see the entire stage??? As we would've in a theater. The cameraman superimposes himself (I assume it's a he) over everyone, the viewer and the musicians. I couldn't to watch for more than 1/2 of this absolutely magnificent theatre.
@catharineconnor20083 жыл бұрын
@@lunaridge4510 This is a very old video from a quarter century ago. Joaquin was in his 20's here. He is 52 years old now. You can't hold the technology from way back then to the standards or wishes of today. But if you want to see more of his power way back then, just put "Joaquin Cortes and Jennifer Lopez" in the search box.
@lunaridge45103 жыл бұрын
@@catharineconnor2008 Thank you, Catharine. I do know how to search the youtube. The camera was invented much earlier than 25 yo. It has nothing to do with technology. In fact, the camerawork here is quite fancy, it would've been so much easier to just mount it in front of the stage and sit back. In stead of doing constant closeups form different angles.

As others have mentioned before, the video editing here is a total disservice to the dance and to the subjet, to the point of being ridiculous. Just film straight up so we can see his whole body (a few angles is fine, I get this is TV), no slow mo, no chosing one area of his body to focus on, no rapid cuts, no need to oversexualise either, the thing is plenty sexy enough, no insulting the intelligence of the audience who clicked (and presumably wants) to see a dance, as opposed to needing overzealous post production to create some kind of an "exciting" (garish) spectacle that hinders our actual view and appreciation of the piece! A few cuts to the musicians is ok. Great singer!! Come on, do you really think you can make one of the most passionate dance forms in existence *more* exciting?? Proof that too much is as bad as not enough, and bad taste can be found everywhere!
@francesmccall49243 жыл бұрын
That's the problem with film vs. being there - You get the stupid interference from camera work etc., keeping you from seeing what you really want to see, your choice and all you get are flashes (like a trailer) - the same applies to music: you want to see the musicians and all they focus on is the singer - Frustrating
@Jayjen353 жыл бұрын
I was coming down into the comments section to say just this. For eons, since Fred Astaire said it every camera person/director has heard repeatedly that the best way to film dancers is primarily from the front with very little editing. Magical editing and camera work are only needed if the dancer is no good. That is MOST CERTAINLY NOT the case here! It really spoils the performance.
@deeharper24823 жыл бұрын

R. V. K. - All I can think is that the cameraperson, or more likely the video editor, is not familiar with flamenco, and is trying to 'jazz it up' to keep things interesting. They do not appear to understand that flamenco is about the ebb and flow of, and the ability to control, tension. Breaking up the dance into quickly cut isolated segments totally destroys that audience experience. And yes, it is absolutely sexy. I say to the cameraperson or the editor...do you randomly break up your performance with no consideration to your 'audience' when YOU are...uh...dancing? That's why you have a comments board full of frustrated people yelling at you!
