I had to take a month break from looking for jobs to do some maintenance and re-evaluate what I'm looking for. I've got 1 job that only gives me 13 hours a week and have had that since mid 2021. I just filled out my 11th job application this week about 20 minutes ago (3rd this morning). I WANT TO WORK! But I guess being a woman a hair below 40 years old, they assume there's certain things I can't do (I don't mind manual labor and thanks to exercise and illness treatment, I'm in better shape than I was 10 years ago). Can't even get a job at a grocery store, though I'm still trying. I did get an interview on Monday, but part of me hopes I don't get it because the amount of hours and pay still won't get me out of my hole--out of desperation, I totally forgot my rule not to apply to jobs that won't advertise their wage range. Places around here cater to high schoolers for spending money, not adults who have to pay property taxes and such.

I feel for this person. It took me 5 years to find a job out of high school. I applied at basic jobs like walmart, mcdonalds, hotels, etc so it's not like I was trying to get a job that was out of reach or that I wasn't qualified for. I have terrible social anxiety. This of course started in 2008 when I graduated high school. I finally got a job but it was with a boss who after 6 months, something happened and they started to treat me really badly to get me to quit. I honestly do not know what happened to cause it. I know people use the word "traumatized" a little too freely nowadays but the whole thing (job searching for years and then being treated so badly when I finally got one) was genuinely traumatizing. I have not looked for a job or worked since. I have pretty bad mental health issues to start with, and I cannot even talk about any of it without shaking. Honestly if people applying for jobs, and people looking to hire are both struggling with resumes, maybe the resume system is the problem. There should be some kind of standardized system in place. If someone with the right skills and experience is not getting hired for positions because their arbitrary piece of paper isn't 100% meeting someone else's subjective requirements, that isn't their fault. The system is broken and no one wants to admit it or fix it.

I've been able to run my own business since no one will hire me, but it is really difficult going it alone and I don't (yet) make enough to hire others. 95% of the time I don't get any feedback from the rejections, but the few times I got some semblance of feedback, the recruiters tell me there is nothing wrong with my resume or my interviewing, it's that the hiring team wants someone with more seniority working for top companies in the industry. That is impossible to obtain when I never get hired, yet that might be a sign not to apply anymore and stay focused on building my own business, accepting I will never get hired.

I have come to realize that the hiring process often becomes more favorable when you have references, whether they're from a family member, friend, or former coworker. In my recent experience, I interviewed with five different companies. Out of those, only one company extended an offer letter to me, and that was because I had a connection through relevant experience. I provided the interviewer with the name of someone I knew. It seems that if you're applying to a company without any references, your chances of being hired are quite slim. Not references, *connections*. Most HR by law can only confirm that you worked there X dates & your official title. But networking can put your resume directly in a hiring mgr's hands, can let you know about jobs before they're posted, and can give you "the in" on a job that's posted for show. While yes, folks should absolutely have a strong resume, and the chops to back it up, having a network (not just friends!) that can actually boost your career makes all the difference.

I can relate to this. I’m Canadian 🇨🇦 and graduated with honors at the top of my class in Environmental Engineering with a 92% gpa. I also had completed a prior degree in Chemistry and had relevant work experience. I proactively contacted hiring managers each week and arranged in-person meetings on my own initiative to promote myself consistently for 8 years (1996~2004) without getting any job offers. I barely survived on very minimal short-term contract work over the years, before finally giving up and deciding to leave the profession forever. This was heartbreaking since I have always been very passionate about environmental protection and conservation my whole life and still am. Eventually after not being able to secure full-time employment in my field and doing landscaping work, I left in 2011 to teach English in Japan. Been in Japan since earning a very low salary of about $25~$30K/year. Career wise, teaching English in Japan has been ok, but not what I consider a ‘real’ career utilizing my knowledge, skills and ability. Living and working in Japan certainly has been a unique experience. Another downside to the low pay is the ongoing social isolation in a predominantly mono cultural society. No doubt, I would have much rather been successful in Canada 🇨🇦.

You have to realise that for most companies, environmental protection is only a cost-factor, driven by a left ideology that's used to push restrictions and artificial costs on people. But if you're in finance and say a financial planner, they're always going with the more genuine and compassionate graduate versus the asshole with 5 years of experience.

Age discrimination became heavy & cruel since 2008 crash - I almost died from years of age discrimination - it destroyed decades of work and destroyed my health. U just have to be over 40 and even healthy strong and young looking. They want only "recent college graduates" with 0-1 years experience. Many people over 40 went homeless and even died prematurely from ageism when the job market picked up again after the crash and they were 90 percent to 100 percent right for the job in skill & experience.

good points. Looking back at my own job searches, I would say that not getting any interviews might signal deep problems with your resume OR your perception of your qualifications. There are plenty of ppl who for some reason believe, that they are qualified to do stuff, that requires certain knowledge or background. The story of gas station attendant applying to senior dev positions is a good example. Just because you believe that a certain job is "nothing special" does not mean that you are an attractive candidate. In fact, your attitude may indicate that you send an ultra generic resume, not writing a single word in a accompanying letter (or you are copy-pasting a 3 page novel there) . Probably you never ever tailor your resume to specific job as well. Do a bit of research on the job you are applying, make it obvious that you acknowledge requirements, make it obvious, that you read the description - this will allow you to put right words, underline specific qualifications. And sometimes yes, you might even realize, that you need to improve yourself. I had this moment of "enlightenment" :D when I suddenly realized, that there is no enough stuff to put on my resume, that I don`t have any interesting extras and my resume are kind of boring even in my own eyes :D

One thing to consider is that when a person is on unemployment, they are required to apply for jobs and to document it. Many people are too lazy to get a job and love their government money. So they apply for jobs that they are blatantly unqualified for just to be able to say that they are trying to find a job to be able to stay on unemployment.

This person (if he or she is reading this) might want to have a company do a mock background check on him or her. There’s companies that do this. It costs. But my gut’s telling me that it might be something coming up in those background checks. Though I’m not sure how far in each interview process you made it. I’m Andrew. Or it could be how you’re presenting yourself at the interview. I mean your attire. Not everywhere is business casual. Some places are still business formal (a suit and tie for gentlemen). Business casual is a bit tricky as I’ve run into issues too. I’d say for gentlemen business casual for a job interview is a sport coat, dress shirt, tie (if you’re a guy it’s a valuable skill to know), dark chinos or dress pants, a belt, dress shoes, and a vneck sweater if it’s cold. And of course and overcoat if it’s cold. Macy’s and Banana Republic have some good quality items for ok prices. Especially if you find them on sale. And nothing bright yellow or bright pink. Leave the Elle Woods getup in the trash.

Is it a bad sign for a recruiter when a candidate quits his job without job offer of the next company? Recruiters suggested me to lie in the resume and improvise freelance job during job gap. 2) Is it a bad sign when I tell that I decided to make a rest for months between jobs? Is it a bad sign when I tell that I do not need salary for my basic living costs? 3) Is it a red flag when I see during interview that my potential boss is less competent then me? Is it a red flag when I as candidate see company recruiting process is not well organized (time and day shifts, response delays, unprepared interviewers)?

I pointed out that some folks may have emails from HS/college days, and no one of higher class in their circle to tell them to get a "clean" one. There are numerous issues with this story, in addition to the issues raised. I wonder what someone has been doing for 11 years. At some point, that gap will be a significant deterrent in hiring. A few months can be easily explained but over a decade is very problematic. Are the skills even still relevant anymore? Does the field still exist? If someone has been looking for a job for over 10 years, perhaps it's time for a career change. At least be upskilling during that time to acquire new skills - this doesn't always require significant money (KZbin is free). You can apply those skills by volunteering, which also increases your networking ability. The last thing someone like that should be doing is sitting around doing nothing until "the call" comes in.

Many have outstanding backgrounds on paper with equally strong networks. Many have been looking for months and are still having trouble landing something. I can also tell you they are getting far less than a 20% response rate right now even with a strong resume/background. I'd hate to have individuals in "this market" think 20% is an achievable response rate for certain roles and industries. I understand that someone with 11 years of job searching with no job is in a different category. I suspect this person probably could benefit from some professional resume review or career coaching.

I am now later in my career, and unemployed, so I am considering redoing my resume/portfolio and trying to break into game design. Do you have any tips for someone like me? How would someone late in their career actually make this transition?

If they’ve been looking that long they probably should think about a career change.

In 2012 I applied for over 100 jobs in the periods of 5 months. I got 2 interviews, and 1 offer. I had to move to a remote location and they gave me a 10k sign-on bonus because they were so desperate. The worst place I ever worked... but I had to pay the bills... and it gave me the year of experience I needed to jump-start my career.

If someone is not getting a job for 2-3yrs, because they are acting dorky, then that's on them. If it's 11 yrs, it's on our society. What the freaking hell.

For me, graduating with honors in Environmental Engineering with a 92% gpa, I couldn’t find a full-time job for 8 years in western Canada 🇨🇦! I’m positive, outgoing, knowledgeable and good at communicating and very passionate about environmental protection and conservation, but couldn’t get job offers to save my life! I eventually gave up and left Canada in 2011 to teach English in Japan earning $25~$30K/year. Still bothers me to this day. As you can see, I can also write without spelling and grammatical mistakes 😆.

@@ShikokuFoodForest Man, that's crazy. I think it's the "employee" model. They have a certain image of a person and you have to fulfil it. Everyone acts like "rational", but it's all but that. I have the same problem with C++. I was writing C++ code since I was 11. That is no 26 yrs (and a degree in cs). However they simply don't want to give me a job that is C++. It's the absurdest thing. Most of the time people who know less than me(including "seniors") sit in front of me, still they decline. No I don't want to complain since IT is pretty big. But you are not fighting against rationality. You are fighting against human expectations and perception which is something completely else.

@@deltapi8859 Hello. In terms of turning the situation around, I was able to save $$ and buy a lovely, traditional post and beam, Japanese-style home on a large piece of land that cost less than 1/10 the average price of a home in Vancouver. Japan is peaceful and relaxing in the countryside. There are pros and cons of living in any country.

I have a 4 year degree from Penn State but an undesirable degree (Animal Science) for the career plan I am now on (Manufacturing/ Business/Executive). I am a good fit for my career, my resume and experience is fairly impressive, but I feel that when I am job searching I am sorted to the “No” pile quickly because of my degree. Any suggestions on how I could change my resume to give myself better opportunities?

Hey, Bryan! I have a question: What do you think about job/work experiences in niche areas or spaces, specially within IT? I and others I know, have expertise in certain IT Hardware, Software Platforms and Networking Tools that most companies either don't use, are not familiar with or are so new that they have not become mainstream, yet. How do you add these to your resume, where the recruiter or hiring manager won't ask you about tech they never heard of?
@angryowlet153 Жыл бұрын
[cries in Linux] I have a similar problem and got a resume review from a volunteer recruiter at McKinsey. I have a ton of personal experience, but no certifications (too broke). It's a difficult balance between generic enough to pass bots and recruiters (who like an alphabet soup after your name), but specific enough to be of interest to the tech team (who usually are more interested in projects). She told me to structure it as a section- "Skills and Software Utilized in Personal Projects and Homelab" -then by general skills like I would with a job, then back it up with projects that exemplify them like I would with job responsibilities/accomplishments. Ex: Skills and Software [...] Networking, cybersecurity, hardware, [buzzwords] - Salvaged mini PC router with OpenWRT [project] - Integrated firewall, DNS sinkhole, [loose network specifics] - Broke BIOS lock, replaced missing SSD and RAM with one SD card, [loose hardware specifics] If I'm really interested in a specific job posting, I'll also add a cover letter attached to the resume in one document. It's a small paragraph that says why I'm interested, then a table with two columns (Job Requirements/Why I Meet Them, both with bullet points), one merged cell at the bottom that lists any additional software mentioned that I have experience with, then the salutation. The table gives me a chance to express to the recruiter why I'm worth talking to without them having to reach out and an extra page to stuff keywords in plain sight. Also, I'm finding Craigslist to be infinitely more useful than LinkedIn or Indeed. But I'm still unemployed after a few thousand applications, so take all of this with a grain of salt, I suppose. Hope this helps!

Resume is only the gate pass. Just having a resume written by a professional resume writer is not going to take you much further. The real test is clearing multiple rounds of interviews which are subjective. To get a job you must know the trend, and you must have ability to clear the job specific or industry specific interviews.

Ageism may be real but not for 2000+ applications. Also, being obese is also a huge detractor. Not saying this person is, but it's a well studied fact that being unfit ABSOLUTELY hurts you in the job market. It's the perception of laziness, poor mental health along with being generally unhealthy. If you're having issues and your resume isn't the problem, might need to start hitting the gym.

Got a degree in finance in 2016. Im been applying for banking jobs with no luck. There are two local banks I'd love to work for, but I can't even get a call back. I have a bach degree in finance and I can't even get interviews for teller jobs 😢
@Melbester9 Жыл бұрын
Did you do an internship when you was in college? Try to get one and it can lead to a job offer. That's pretty ridiculous that you aren't even getting interviews for teller jobs. I've had so many interviews for tons of jobs and nowhere.
@cajunguy6502 Жыл бұрын
@@Melbester9 no, that is definitely something I regret never doing. I plan to eventually go back and take the 3 classes I need to one day sit for CPA. I have debated taking out loans and doing that now just so I can apply for internships! But if I can't even get teller call backs from local banks, what are the chances accounting firms would take me. Yeah the teller job thing is downright ridiculous. It's so frustrating. There can't be so many perfect fits for teller jobs that I can't even get an interview! Sometimes I wonder if I got blacklisted somehow. There is a guy who shares my name (which is simi-unique) in this area, I wonder if he isn't burning bridges for us both 😂
@Melbester9 Жыл бұрын
@@cajunguy6502 The good thing is that if you still enrolled in college, you could apply for internships. They're easier to get than applying for jobs which require work experience. I was fortunate to have my first job while in college, was lucky and thanks to a special lady. This was before I knew about internships. Some internships give you stipends and they will pay you a bit while you're on job training. Then after a while if you do well as an intern and the company/organization likes you, they'll give you a job offer. Internships help when you don't have your first job & work experience on your resume along with the networking/references opportunities. I had a job offer for a Case Manager position lost during the pandemic because of the vaccine mandate. But now I feel more comfortable having EXP on my resume and better off applying to jobs than I did in the past. Also try to make sure your resume gets seen by ATS when you apply to jobs. If the keywords for the position you're applying for isn't on your resume, ATS won't recognize it. You will get passed by.
