Dude; MASSIVE respect to Owen in this. This is so outside his typical role, and it's beyond impressive. He could have been in the newest "Top Gun" and done a very believable role.

I remember watching this as a teenager. times were so much simpler back then. I too can't believe it's that old. feels like it was just yesterday. Funny watching it now, I can identify the rashist weapons systems in the movie since I'm following the war in Ukraine like the Strela-10 SAM or the BMD. However the missiles only have a 5000 metre operational range but they flew a lot more than that dodging them

Helluva a movie. Got to remember the Slavs/Serb’s shot a actual F117 down during this conflict(I don’t think they actually named the country, been awhile). kind of made this movie a little more realistic for me , anyway. Good times , I was young.

He's the kind of guy you see a lot as a sort of ambivalent officer, but still a basically good guy. I'm fairly certain they modified to role to match his personality and strengths, and it just happened to be analogous to a real type of person.. so I'm not sure 50 O. Wilson movies, where he is a half-assed officer that learns a lesson about duty, would really have a "blockbuster" level of success.

@hardstyle905 I don't know if the movie got it right with the (thermite?) fuze, but jet pilots genuinely have a "zeroize" button in the cabin that flashes any onboard memory to all 0's so there's no intel or software engineering for the enemy to recover. I wouldn't be surprised if it automatically runs when seats eject too.

I experienced this a couple years back when I was trying to beat my record up to the top of a couple peaks on hiking trails and back down. On the way back down I was running with my feet low to the ground due to the nature of the terrain. The ball of my right foot just barely skimmed a small rock on the ground, just enough to keep my right leg from moving forward for the next step. My body plunged forward like a meteor about to impact the Earth. I knew I was going to plow face-first into the ground and rocks going downhill. Before I did, it seemed like time stopped, and I had all sorts of time to imagine that I would break bones and need an ambulance ride. It was surreal. Then I hit. BOOM. My stuff flew in all different directions, phone, hat, shades, water bottle... shredded my hands and arms pretty bad, a bit on the face, but that was the worst damage. I carefully moved my body and checked for signs of breakage and found none, so I got up, grabbed my stuff and continued running, breaking my record. The next day I found out I had cracked ribs. That time-slows-down thing is pretty far out.

The thing about Behind Enemy Lines is that it never aims for anything approaching realism. It's more... expressionistic. Evocative. Everything from this scene to the minefield scene is more about the imagery, the emotions of these concepts like being chased by a missile or running through a minefield. It gets super loosey goosey with how planes work or how mines work but the end result is kinetic and mesmerizing. It's very different to a military film that gets lots of stuff wrong wrong but doesn't do anything interesting with it.

so the missile chase itself isn't very realistic. real sams can track to a degree, but once it misses it misses, its not going to loop back and chase after. that being said the ejection itself is insanely accurate, right down to the explosive rivets blowing out the canopy and the seat itself being pulled back into the booster.
@Tank50us
@Tank50us 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. A more dramatic way of depicting the SAMs would've been to have multiple launchers of different types firing at them from different directions. At first it's SA-13s and SA-9s, which they manage to escape from, before an SA-6 drives them back down low, and then finally we get a shot of some random Serbs with Iglas getting a call that the jet was heading towards them, and they set up, fire, and get the kill-shot with the main characters never even knowing that they were shot at until after one of the missiles blows the tail off.

@gogogadgetGlock
@gogogadgetGlock 6 ай бұрын
@@Santos79700well not completely. The S-300 is semi-active radar guided so flares and dropping fuel tanks wouldn’t stop it. The only way to defeat SAR guided SAM’s are Chaff, notching, outrunning (unlikely), and hitting the deck to confuse the SAM’s radar. If it was IR guided missiles, there would be no SAM launch warning or track because the IR SAM tracks heat signatures which isn’t detected by a F18C’s RWR. The SAM in the movie is the Strela-10 (SA-13), which is a short range, optical/infrared-guided SAM. Those things are super hard to defeat when in range, which is why SOP is stay outside their range (5nm) and altitude.

The script writers use a trick called suspension of disbelief, but often they take it too far. As an engineer I cringe when I see the scenes where a character, for example, silently crawls in the ductwork through the entire building, easily going around corners, climbing up the risers, manages to open grilles from the inside, and comes out without a speck of dust on him. Not a single turning vane or a volume damper that would block his progress in sight. When I see this the movie is ruined for me, no matter how good it is. Or take the Die Hard With a Vengeance movie, my favorite pet peeve. The bad guys blow up a subway station as a cover for their attempt to rob the Gold Vault at New York Federal Reserve Bank. Within an hour some dude shows up with a column of dump trucks and heavy equipment and the police just let him waltz in and start disturbing the crime scene, no questions asked. I don't even mention the fact that the vault is hundreds of feet below the subway station and it would take months to tunnel to it through hard Manhattan Schist. That's just not believable.
