PLOT: When a German U-571 submarine with a sophisticated encryption machine onboard is sunk during a World War II battle at sea, the Allies send an American Navy force led by Lieutenant Andrew Tyler (Matthew McConaughey) to retrieve it for study. Boarding the German ship, the Americans' cover as a rescue force is quickly blown. Forced to take the crew hostage, the Americans lay their explosives and prepare to destroy the German vessel before the Nazis can send naval backup.

The mechanics name is tank. Since trigger drowned struggling to turn the valve to enable the torpedo to be fired but no one was aware he had drowned, tank was left to fire the torpedo. "Tank fire right now or we die!" Great scene

Waaaaay too much damage for a torpedo. It blew up the entire ship. And, the torpedo appeared to be filled with gazoline.

It was a _destroyer._ Essentially a barely seaworthy firecracker with tissue paper for armor. All you have to do is spark the magazines below the gun turrets, and that's it. That goes double if you hit a DD's own torpedoes with any kind of real damage.

@@Zack-xl6ph Yeah, all of those can factor in to a more destructive explosion. But ships were more heavily armored back then too. So it's not impossible for that to happen, but it's more likely to just disable the ship. A lot of ships could survive several torpedo hits before complete destruction. But as the other commenter mentioned, it's Hollywood, lol. Everything explodes.

The use of guided missiles has made heavy ship armor obsolete. So now the focus is on maneuverability and anti-missile tactics.
