CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After their cover is blown, the assault team launches a hardcore attack on the German U-boat.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this World War II action thriller, American reconnaissance agents learn that a German submarine is sinking. The doomed ship carries an Enigma Machine, a special coding device that allows high-level Axis forces to send messages that can't be read without a similar encryption mechanism. Obtaining a working Enigma device would be invaluable for the Allied war effort, so a U.S. sub is sent out to rescue the machine. However, German forces have already picked up the sub's distress signal and are en route to rescue their comrades. U-571 features a distinguished cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, and Jon Bon Jovi.

with the amount of guns the germans had on board i wouldnt have been surprised at a tiger tank driving down that corridor in the end. buchheims "das boot" says they have a single pistol in a lockbox in the captain's cabin.

That is sensible. The U boat would have spotted anyone from pretty far away and had 88mm gun and MG34. If you watched Das Boot 1981, there are 2 firearms shown on screen. During boarding, one sailor had an MP40. And later the captain had a P38.

Yes, but only if they go on full speed to push the boat under the water. Thats why all crew members had to run to the front of the boat they pushed the engine to full speed to use the velocity to go under water. A waiting boat needs much more time to dive. But in this movie it is rediculus nevertheless.

As someone who watched Das Boot first (absolutely loved it), I got to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! Sure, it's not historically accurate, but it was thrilling. Because Hollywood wanted to make big bucks and felt if they Americanised it American audiences would go see it. So basically America now get the credit for something they had no involvement in and hadn't even entered the war when the British did this. Thanks to the brave crew of HMS Bulldog we were able to break Enigma something that was believed to be impossible and those brave sailors gave their lives for that and another country took all the credit.

If you're wondering or care, I wouldn't imagine it being uncommon carrying weapons on a friendly boarding party, never go from one place to another unarmed. I believe the cause for the German captain's signal to alert is that the weapon that he saw through his binocs was an American Thompson, hard to tell because of the bad lighting, but the rear sights look a lot similar, and even later the boarding party holds up the surrendering Germans with some generation of Thompson SMG. the rear sights in the light are unmistakable.

Submarines were the only weapons technology of World War II in which the United States was equal to and in some respects ahead of Germany. In everything else Germany was well ahead. If the Luftwaffe had managed to get their jet fighters such as the Messerschmitt 262 and Heinkel 162 in the air a year sooner and in large numbers they would have swept the U.S. and British fighters and bombers from the sky.
@H1GHONF1RE

Kind of true, but even with the numbers they had in the air at the time, Hitler ordered the Luftwaffe to use them as bombers instead of fighters, which allowed the allied prop-planes to smoke them. That and his insistence on invading Russia in winter are the reason were not all speaking German now.

Its one thing to miss a few things for accuracy in historical films, like the exact model of tank used or contemporary armaments. Rewriting history altogether is something else entirely, disrespectful to those who actually captured enigma, British men not American.

Like this: 1. U-boat crew machine gunning merchant survivors. 2. Depth charges too close to sub. 3. The S-26 sank in a test dive. (It actually sank in a collision.) 4. Americans wearing German medals (German navy men NEVER wore them at sea so it would've been a dead giveaway). 3. German U-boat taking so long to crash dive. 6. Men firing machine guns in a metal enclosed space (would make them deaf if a bullet didn't ricochete off of something and kill them). 7. Americans operate German machinery (having a German speaking sailor would not do it with all the machinery involved). 8. Resupply U-boats having torpedo tubes. (The supplies they deliver were kept where the torpedo room would be). 7. American submarine exploding when torpedoed. 10. Submarines fighting underwater (tech didn't exist till a decade after WWII). 11. German commander wasting torpedoes (The resupply U-boat captain). 12. Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the Atlantic. 13. German destroyer in the Atlantic. 14. Destroyer has the number Z49 (There was a Z49 planned, but never laid down) 15. More than 80 depth charges are dropped in addition to the same problem above. (A German destroyer wouldn't have more than thirty.) 16. The destroyer uses active sonar. (The Germans used passive sonar) 17. A torpedo hit on the bow causes the destroyer to explode. (All that would do is make a 30 foot hole. Whether or not it would sink or float is an even 50 50.) 18. The destroyer stops immediately. (It would move hundreds of feet on momentum before it would stop).

@@pizzaplanettruck9761 Also when the German captain ordered "Los", in the first scene. The subtitle said "Fire," but it actually means "Away." Das Boot made the same mistake in the convoy attack scene. The sailors on U-boats wouldn't say fire, unless there was a fire on board. Interesting how the German language has words that are spelled the same way they are in English, but pronounced differently. For example "Fire," is pronounced "Foyah," I used to think that was some mistake they made on A Bridge Too Far, during the advance, when the German office ordered, "Foyah," to the anti tank gun crews, after the artillery barrage. "Hello," is another example. They pronounce it, "Ahllo." Even, "Stop," is almost English. "Stopp," pronounced, "Shtop," The only ones that almost sound completely English, that I've heard are, "Alarm," "Diesel" and "Machine."
