Of all the big-screen gangsters, none outside of maybe the Corleone family have had the impact on audiences that Al Pacino’s Tony Montana has had. To this day, dialogue from Brian De Palma’s Scarface is referenced in hip-hop, and it’s hard for people to remember that in 1983, Scarface was not considered all that successful a film. It did decently at the box office, but it wasn’t a runaway smash. De Palma was faced with a lot of criticism for the movie’s extreme violence, with him infamously swapping an X-rated cut of the movie with the MPAA-approved R-rated cut for general release. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie (written by Jake Dee, edited by Ric Solomon and narrated by Mathew Plale), we dig into the making of De Palma’s classic. So say hello to my little friend and press play on WTF Happened to Scarface!

This is one of those film where the term "overrated" gets thrown around, and it bothers me because this film is a true masterpiece that is even better than its 1932 original film. Brian del Palma brought his magic to this film and I can't imagine someone making this with as much passion and flare like he did.

In that same vein, Grease was as overrated as Grease 2 was underrated, people totally destroyed it because they thought it was basically a remake, though, it seems to have received a vindication in recent decades.

I like the original better. The car to car shootout after tony gets attack in the Club. And Tony's sister shooting it out with the police and getting shot by the police, instead if tony having sexual urges toward Gina. Not only that but in the original film shows tony making moves after saying hes gonna make some money. Al Pacino scarface dosent show him doing any of that. The original kinda shows his rises abit more than a 40 second montage, it shows tony doing dirty work . so Paul Muni's film really seems like more of a gangster film, dont get me wrong i love Als Scarface ,but,,,,,,its kinda overrated

The "Look at de pelican fly! C'mon pelican!" scene may be the funniest sequence in any non-comedy. It's incongruous with what's going on and the stupidity of the Montanna character, whether Tony knew it wasn't a pelican and was just being goofy or he really thought it was a pelican, is just gold. Thank God nobody was allowed to redo the soundtrack with a bunch of contemporary rap songs. Also, Son of Tony? What a blessing from heaven that was never made.

This movie deserves credit for its historical accuracy 1. Castro indeed dumped immigrants in US territory, many had criminal records 2. The cocaine trade built the economy of Miami. While the rest of the country was on recession, Gucci and Mercedez stores were opening left and right 3. They also got the nightlife correct. Most of these clubs had glass tables so that patrons can chop cocaine on them 4. The motel scene was not an artistic exaggeration. It was actually based on a real case 5. Banks were indeed having problems with the inflow of cash, they were taking in money more than they were legally allowed to 6. According to a report, at the time about 7 out of 10 newly graduated police were dirty 7. The use of the Mac 10 submachine gun was very popular at the time. It was not as bulky as rifles or shotgun. You can quickly spray a lot of bullets. Its so light, one can shoot it while riding at the back of a motorcyle 8. Sosa was based on a real drug lord

Scarface is the most perfect gangster film in my eyes. In a single film it shows the rise and fall of an immigrant coming to the US to relaise the American Dream, brick by boring brick, achieved it, but ultimately spoiled it and threw away his success. Every aspect of the film is masterful from the smybolism, the cinematograpy, the story and the acting. As much as I like films like Goodfellas and Casino, Scarface didn't have any of the goofy voiceover narration. Nobody could convince me this film isn't incredible.

It's because the movie is timeless. It's funny because it definitely has that early 80s feel, and it captures that capsule of time. But the real answer is the realism, the rawness, and most of all, Pacino's performance. I mean this was one of them movies where we are rooting for the bad guy. Pacino's portrayal of Tony Montana is beyond mesmerizing. He does a lot, and I mean a LOT of bad things. And he makes us care about him. Also the movie is almost 3 hours and boy does it fly. The first half of the movie is Tony's journey to and through the American system. He starts off with nothing. And by the half point mark in the movie, he's got everything he wanted,"The World and Everything in It," then once he gets it, he begins his demise. And the last half hour or so is a complete master class of Tony's demise. I believe the whole movie is just a very tragic and cautionary tale. But Tony is a complete antihero, with more quotable lines in the film than probably any other. This movie blasted into the world in 1983. It is now 2023,and ppl still go back to it, the younger generation knows, the generation before that, and I'm sure this film will absolutely stand the rest of time. Imo, it's perfect. It's not like an American gangster movie that Martin Scorcese has pumped out many a time. And imo, I don't think that it should be compared to one. Sure, DeNiro and Pesci are the GOATS when it comes to the Italian American Mafia as we know. But this isn't like that. Yes, it's a gangster film but this deals with the Puerto Rican gangster, the cartel, the ppl who were supplying the mafia with cocaine and if you did that drug in the 80s,chances are , it probably went through the hands of ppl like Alexander Soda, and Tony Montana. This movie pulls you into Tony's world, the way he thinks, and his reaction to every aspect of his life. And you will never see a spiral into the bloody, fiery, and bullet riddled descent into hell that Tony goes to by the end of the movie. And when them credits role, the movie finally lets free of the grip it has on you. The thing about it is, this movie will stay with you, the cast and the acting is top notch. And you'll never see a bad guy like this again!

As a GenXer born in 1968, I fully admit, I didn't actually see Scarface until decades later when I purchased the DVD of it. I would always see a Scarface poster in University Students houses back in the 2000's when I was a Cable TV Installer/Service Tech. That is mainly what drove me to blindly buy the movie before I actually watched it. I never regret the purchase and I do re-watch it every so often. It IS a must seen gangster movie and, like so many other 80's and 90's movies Hollywood keeps trying to re-make for money's sake. You can't capture the magic of the cast that helped tell this well written story. Thanks for making this video JoBlo!!

Brian De Palma gets criticized all the time for violence in his movies. I don’t mind it a whole lot, since I like a number of his movies

Watched this recently on 4k disc on my new 84' OLED... and my gawd, it's just as good as the first time I saw it 20+ years ago. It's just so endlessly captivating! Carrie also holds up beautifully from De Palma, but the Untouchables does not. That is kind of hard to get through nowadays.

I never get the title of any of these kinds of videos. What happened to any of these films? Well.....Time passes . They stopped being shown in cinemas and they end up on and off on streaming services. Its not even like its a forgotten classic. Whats next? What happened to jaws? What happened to Batman (1989) I mean it would be more of a genuine question to ask what happens to certain films because of modern day censorship. Ie; what happened to bill and teds bogus journey ? ie; too many gay slurs/gay bashing. What happened to ace ventura pet detective?

Another issue Oliver Stone was going through, was that he was trying to get his project Platoon off the ground for years. This was while he penning Scarface and Midnight Express before that. Luckily, he got his wish, and Platoon won a few Awards as a result.

I only first watched this movie recently (I'm 34) and it absolutely is a masterpiece but for some reason, I think that the films intro with all the news footage of Cubans leaving for the States and Fidel Castro going mental on the stage, is one of my most favourite movie openings of all time. I don't know why though

We all know that MTV's Cribs really gave the movie a second life. Almost every episode had the DVD version featured. The DVD was only released as a limited run and was extremely expensive to buy in the late 90's/early 2000's due to that run. The VHS version was common in comparison. The anniversary remaster on DVD is when it became widely adopted

@@spanishprisoner instant classic lol. No it wasn’t. It only did okay at the box office and received mixed reviews upon release. The guy is right. Every teenager in the 90’s and early 00’s had it on VHS or DVD and half of them had a Scarface poster in their room, which is why it’s so popular today.
