It wasn't until I saw Black Adam that I found out that Dwayne's contract stated that any character he plays should never be beaten down a peg. What's the point of rooting for him if he's an unstoppable force of nature? Even Schwarzenegger and Stallone were portrayed as vulnerable in their roles.

Considering how I thought he could very well be the next Arnie early in his movie career, but never lived up to that, I do find that theory plausible. It limits his potential roles and just makes him all the more same-y every time he takes to the screen. The main differences are his character's level of hardass. Basically, his characters are mostly the same, except there is a sliding scale of 'fun badass to humourless beatdown machine', with him usually somewhere in the middle with 'generally stoic, but can crack a joke or flirt sometimes'.

Another missed opportunity for The Rock was “The King” a movie where he would play King Kamehameha The Great: the man who united the Hawaiian Islands in the late-1700/early 1800s. Robert Zemeckis of “Back to the Future/Forrest Gump” fame was supposed to direct and Randall Wallace of “Braveheart” fame was supposed to pen the script. Although the pandemic is the official reason why the project was canceled, his casting was considered too controversial to proceed. As a Kanaka Maoli (person of Native Hawaiian ancestry), I understand the controversy but still would’ve loved to see it.

Enjoyed his very early movies. He wasn't locked into the "cannot lose" mindset, and was willing to take chances and play some pretty oddball roles. These days? There is an old Doonesbury comic strip that I think sums it up. A bunch of reporters are interviewing a celebrity, who is giving nothing but tepid generic answers to their questions. Finally, someone asks, "Sir, if we turned off all the cameras right now, would you cease to exist?" "Errrr, I prefer not to speculate ...." I feel like that's Johnson exactly - the guy's just a walking advertisement of what he USED to be.

WTF Happened to The Fall (2006)?
@vampman87Ай бұрын
I'm a little surprised that you went deep into the Rock's career but didn't mention the controversy that happened with his return to WWE this year. It was hinted early in the year that the Rock was returning as a wrestler and was challenging his cousin, Roman Reigns, for the WWE Undisputed Championship at Wrestlemania. Roman had broken records as the longest running champion in the modern era, with only Hulk Hogan and Bruno Sammartino having longer title reigns. People were expecting him to win the Royal Rumble,(a 30-man match where the winner challenges a champion) challenge his cousin, and most likely lose, giving Reigns another year with the belt. And then something interesting happened... he didn't appear in the Rumble at all. A wrestler named Cody Rhodes, who fought Roman at the previous year's Wrestlemania and lost, won the Rumble, and it was clear that Cody wanted a rematch. BUT THEN Cody went on Smackdown and said he was deferring his right to challenge Roman to the Rock, while he challenged the lower-tier champion Seth Rollins. Fans were PISSED. For WEEKS social media had the hastag # WeWantCody, and they wholeheartedly rejected the Rock vs. Roman feud. So, weeks before Wrestlemania, WWE pivoted in a brilliant way- they had a press conference which was supposed to have Roman formally accept the Rock's challenge, and they showed their family tree to set the stage that this feud was destined from birth. Cody then stormed in, declared that he changed his mind and was exercising his right to challenge Roman, and the Rock should step aside and go back to making movies. The Rock then turned heel and said HE was the one in charge of the Bloodline (Roman's stable which consisted of him and his many cousins) and if Cody wanted to get to Roman's championship he'd have to go through the Rock first. Wrestlemania 40 had two days and the first day had Cody in a match against the Rock for the right to have the Bloodline at ringside for day 2 (Cody lost) and then Day 2 had the actual match. Cody beat the odds, with help from other wrestlers from the Rock's past, including John Cena and the UNDERTAKER, and won the championship, ending Roman Reigns's nearly 4-year reign of terror. The Rock then went on Raw the next night, congratulated Cody, and told him that Roman was just a miniboss and he, the Rock, is the FINAL boss Cody will have to go through to cement himself as the greatest wrestler of the WWE. The Rock showed up a few months later at a PPV called "Bad Blood," to taunt Cody, seemingly setting up a feud for next year... and then we got news this week that the WWE has no plans for the Rock facing Cody next year and the cameo at the end of "Bad Blood" was purely fanservice. We also learned that the original plan was to have Rock vs Roman at Wrestlemania 40, but the execution made no sense because the Royal Rumble winner was SUPPOSED to challenge Roman. If the Rock had entered and won, the story would've worked, but Mr. Johnson not wanting to bother to go through the steps just really turned the fans off, even if their feud was foreshadowed.
