Lots of people complain about the home alone scenes, but the whole movie centers around whether the old ways work in the modern age. Bond is a field agent, his ability is questioned by the likes of Q and Silva who regard him as ineffective. It's not just that Bond is old by any means, but the way he operates brings more liability than effectiveness. So Bond tries to be modern, and the team tries to best Silva in technology and hacking, and they all fail. Then Bond takes the fight back to the stone age to prove that the old dogs have new tricks. I also like the attention to detail in some of the backstories, like Silva's cultural background being Portuguese makes it easier for him to blend into Macau a former Portuguese colony, and then potentially building his HK connections from there. And then him being captured after the handover of 97 is also a nice touch.

Skyfall was, in my opinion, the best Bond film of the Daniel Craig era so far. We will wait and see how it ranks overall once No Time To Die is released. Skyfall had great drama, great character moments, and some superb action. There has been no other Bond film I have seen, where you were really invested in not just Bond, but all his supporting cast. Even the visuals on the opening credits was masterful, and heads and shoulders above other Bond intros, and that is saying a lot given that Bond films are known for their creative title sequences. Adele's title song is arguably one of the best Bond songs of the franchise. It ranks up there with Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only" and Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill". Really nothing was lacking in this installment.

@@neo-filthyfrank1347 There's hardly anything realistic about the Avengers, but people still enjoy it. Grossed billions. James Bond was always a sort of super hero character, it was always a fantasy for both men and women (the gadgets were part of the brand) and us the audience knowing very well, to suspend belief -- it was part of the charm. If you ask me, the removal of the gadgets was partly due to the lack of imagination in today's film making, the new people behind the franchise just couldn't pull it off. I had an idea for a Bond swan song in a Final Bond Movie Ever post-credits scene: The Queen is dead. William is King. The 007 program has been decommissioned by MI-6 after James Bond's "tragic death protecting the Queen". Cut to Craig's roughshod Bond standing in front of a lonely bar/hotel on the African plains, reading over the well-thumbed card with impeccable handwriting; "MI-6 may not need you James, but the world still does" followed by a line of longitude and latitude. When he enters the lobby bar, the camera pans across and we get the first look at the sparsely populated lounge and it's ALL of the previous 007s. Craig nods to the group and says, "Gentlemen...", looks around the room, gestures to the space and says, "Extraordinary". Roger Moore rolls his eyes behind his paper, David Niven sucks his teeth, Pierce Brosnan guffaws behind the bar, George Lazenby leans against the billiards table and says nothing, Timothy Dalton smirks and nods to Sean Connery, who looks over his readers to Craig and says, "Funny you should shay that", smiles for a beat and the screen hard cuts to black.

Quantum of Solace felt like a direct sequel to Casino Royale, while Skyfall felt like a reboot of the reboot. It took Bond out of the realistic, grounded universe established in the first two films and put him into a Black Knight Rises story with a campy villain, implausible cartoon action sequences and an unnecessary Batman style back story. After QOS we should have got to see Bond at his peak, but we never did. The story just got rebooted again, Bond must struggle to become Bond again , and we never got a satisfying character arc contuining from what came before. We never got to spend a whole film with Bond just being bond and going on missions not related to him. Skyfall was a wrong turn that ruined the whole Craig era. And the plot was utter nonsense.

Making a bunch of money is one thing, quality is another. For years, Thunderball was the big money maker, but who thinks it was better than Goldfinger or From Russia With Love? The action in Skyfall is basically a series of Bond’s failures. From the very beginning of the film (he doesn’t save the wounded agent) throughout the film (he fails to get the hard drive, he fails to question Patrice, he gets duped by Silva, etc) to the last big fail (set up a trail of cyber bread crumbs to attract Silva, but actually bring the target with him… what could go wrong?) it’s one failure after another. Silva’s plan is ridiculous: get captured (on purpose) to escape, be chased (past a pre-set train disaster), to place M in the open (at a public hearing about a secret service) so he can assassinate her. Why not just blow up her office while she’s actually in it? Casino Royale was the last good Bond film. Quantum could have been good, if it didn’t take 3 viewings to figure out what the hell was going on. Skyfall? One viewing was enough. Blecch.

Usually Bond films are like “popcorn movies” for me, but this one had me leaving the theater high on adrenaline like I was at the end of Phantom Menace or A New Hope (can’t beat the Duel of the Fates & Death Star Trench Run).

I clearly remember hearing "Rumor Has it" by Adele and saying to people, "Man, they should get Adele to do a James Bond theme."

No Time to Die has 30 mins of 15/70mm IMAX shot footage, which should look delicious! Linus Sandgren has a legit shot at dethroning Deakins as Best Bond cinematographer.

It’s funny. I always thought Skyfall was just an incredibly boring movie. It drags on, feels like it just lags for hours, and the color palette for the film just absolutely put me to sleep. And Adele’s song, though popular at the time, just sounds like a dirge to me.

Ive once read an article that stated they planned at some point to insert a scene with Sean Connery with Craig as father of James Bond and IIRC the scene even was already filmed but later got scrapped because Bond was always depicted as an orphan.

Eon did approach Sean Connery to play Kincaide. Connery turned it down because he felt his presence would distract. And I kind of agree, as much as I would have loved to have seen Sean Connery in the role, I think it would have taken me out of the movie because I'd be fangirling over seeing Sean Connery in the role. I know the same thing happened to me when I saw Leonard Nimoy pop up in Star Trek Into Darkness. My brain went "Leonard Nimoy! I love Leonard Nimoy! Prime Spock here! Wait... why is he here?" And I think my brain would have said the same thing if Sean Connery appeared in this movie. I'd be going "Original Bond! Yay!"

The Home Alone (or Predator if you will) finale in Last Blood was actually pretty good. The problem was that everything before it pretty much sucked.

Skyfall is my favorite entry. I don't mind that Silva's plot is silly and overly-convoluted and the production feels a bit too Nolan-y as that was unfortunately the era for everyone. Plus Bond and Batman are already very similar but I digress. We get Mendes, Newman, Deakins here and that's awesome for film lovers. I love the cast, the set piece action, and that ending is so damn good. I'm not a big early Craig fan I'm more of a Skyfall and Spectre fan and I'll most likely love No Time To Die. It already feels like we're finally going back to the old formula again and that's very refreshing. You can tell Craig wants to have fun again too.

Skyfall has in my opinion the best ending in the entire franchise; we finally hear the classic theme, we are introduced to Moneypenny, a male M, and the classic office...is 1962 again, and the franchise goes full circle back to Dr No.

This is a great looking bond, like a 2hr Luxury watch ad - but ultimately bond and M make the dumbest choices in this movie. The bad guy plot makes zero sense. Movie starts with M saying take the shot - her best agent just chased this dude down in heroic fashion and is in a hand to hand fight with him on a train going into a tunnel - she tells a Junior agent to take a shot from a few hundred yards away lol. Why in the world wouldn’t she bet on bond? I guess once that train goes into the tunnel there’s not telling where it’ll end up - oh wait. It’s a train in a tunnel. That’s just the beginning of stupidity in this film. Craig is a fantastic bond and the movie looks beautiful but the story is far dumber than it thinks it is.

Agree. Plot was convoluted, unbelievable. Great talent wasted. Found it very disappointing. Wasn't any better the second time.
@doomprogger63453 жыл бұрын
M ordering Monepenny to shot was so stupid, ´cause Bond had proven again and again that he was able to take down the bad guys. So why suddenly this distrust in Bonds abilitys? Really lazy writing. Because the plot demanded Bond to get shot, M had to order it, despite knowing from experience her best agent would manage to win in the end. But why building up an interesting but complex character driven plot, when you can just focus on a simple story driven plot, where characters constantly act out of character, just because the story has to move from a to b, using the figures as mere plot devices, with zero consideration towards their motives and beliefs.

yes! and Bond later told MoneyPenny that he heard M say "take the shot" so why didn't he duck??

Turns 10 today! I remember seeing it with my older sister and buddy Tom The action is spectacular particularly the final battle with a mansion and a helicopter shootout, the cinematography is dynamite, the locations are breathtaking, (the fight against the neon-lit background in Shanghai gives off an impressive silhouette) and this has Craig soaring as this character we’ve come to know and love blending old and modern aspects Thomas Newman’s score really elevates it too More familiar elements like the gadgets, one-liners finally come back into play as well even Q Again it’s very long like ‘Casino Royale’ but remains a high point in the franchise that the positives outweigh the negatives Who would've thought an indie director like Sam Mendes could do wonders? This is perhaps Craig's finest performance as Bond next to ‘No Time to Die’, he's vulnerable physically and mentally with a sense of realism restored Craig himself didn't like the old way of how Bond originated so they updated to fit the liberality and equality of the current worldview He’s a man embodying stoicism, emotionally detached, mentally and physically resilient while also unbending in the face of evil The flaws are stripped though and laid bare Javier Bardem as Silva is chewing up the scenery and having a ball with this quintessential Bond villain, has that effeminate energy but mirrors 007 lots And he has actual motivation for striking back at M Naomi Harris brings a new refreshing take as Eve Moneypenny preferring the office as opposed to field work after she gets a taste Ralph Fiennes is a nice addition as Mallory and I'm glad they brought in Ben Whishaw as Q Grammy-winner Adele singing the main title song is terrific with some of the finest symbolic visuals in a Bond film making it very ominous It’s really sucks this was Judi Dench's last turn as M but she does an immensely wonderful job being the matriarch making the toughest calls with Bond almost being an adoptive son , even if she sees her operatives as dispensable so that makes her morally ambiguous Plus there’s plenty of foreshadowing at the beginning I never expected a Bond picture to make me cry knowing Dench wouldn’t be coming back And this did a better job celebrating the 50th anniversary doing all these nods for longtime fans without self-parodying itself while still being metaphorical We forget to think on our sins, how safe do we really feel?, how many are still left standing when we feel indispensable?, there’s no shame in admitting we’ve lost a step, how much do we know about fear?, the old ways are still good, the past comes back Mendes did a spectacular job solidifying 007 as the ultimate secret agent of our time no matter how much the world changes One of the best movies of 2012 and one of the great James Bond movies period!

You should do a comment on On her majesty’s secret service, which i regard not only as enormously underrated but also as the highest point of the first generation of bond films, a culmination that started with dr No and worked its way up to it, with Diana Rigg as my favorite bond girl by far and George Lazenby as far better than he was given credit for. Not to mention the hearbreaking epilogue, something that was unseen before and that they tried to revisit with No time to die, which borrows more than a few things from that 1969 gem. My bad: i just noticed that review already is out there!

I really enjoy Skyfall , it would be in the top 3 best James Bond Movies of all time so far for me.. A View To A Kill would be in the top 3 and I don't know which would be number one for me. I can`t do it. I enjoy Skyfall for me because it hits home to reality to me as a ex-military Veteran where you are " Patriotic " to your home and country but the higher ups SHIT on you and don't appreciate you if you are not a " Brown Noser " or give ridiculous impressive production. They feel a descent paycheck is good enough " Ada Boys " after you give your all. I feel his pain. Your review was dead on in all departments. Javier Barden does a great job as the Bad Guy,. I feel his pain too. That's what the two of them have in common, how there boss treated them. I love this movies. Good review A+.

I'll be honest I really don't like it, it's too serious and Bond comes off as depressed. I don't want later Roger Moore/Peirce Brosnan silliness, but the lack of charm, adventure and heroism is sorely lacking in the modern films.

I agree with this being great. I have this rated slightly above Casino Royale (which I have No Time to Die close behind). Skyfall was all around the best to me. I put it above CR because Daniel was a couple movies in and felt better at bond in this vs CR. Not to mention Everyone else in the cast did amazing in their respective roles.
