That's exactly the thing the annoyed me about Spectre - it was still cool but between that and its similarties to Mission Impossible Rogue Nation it just didn't grab me as much. They should have just kept the C plot as the main thing with maybe Spectre being behind it all - cause that's a really Spectre thing to do, but Blofeld never was one for focussing on Bond. There's only two occasions where Blofeld targets Bond directly and that is at the end of OHMSS - where it thematically made absolute sense - and at the start of For Your Eyes Only, where they basically poked fun at the whole legal story by killing Blofeld off, right at the start - and in a really comedical way too. Apart from those two instances, Blofeld always tried to kill Bond because he interfered with his plans, not because he had some grudge against him. Spectre undermined the plot of all the other movies by tying them together like this if you ask me.
@derworfnet3 жыл бұрын
@@Skyfox94 When "Casino Royale" came out and hinted at a bigger organisation working in the shadows and when "Quantum of Solace" further explored that idea, I was down with the idea of having a Spectre-like Organisation being the main antagonist thorough the Craig-era, much like Spectre was during the tenures of Connery and Lazenby. I still think it could have worked. The way they tried to do it in this movie was the worst course they could have taken. Its attempt of trying to connect the previous movies together just comes across as clumsy. They finally had the right of using the names Blofeld and Spectre after so many years and, not really knowing what to do with them, proceeded to fumble everything.

I agree with this. Also it seems unlikely Le Chiffre was a member of Spectre either, they made him out to be more of an independent banker whom Spectre/Quantum puts terrorists in touch with. He's not Spectre himself, otherwise he wouldn't have needed Mr White to introduce him to the terrorists at the start of Casino Royale. Mr White would have just been an unnecesary middle man in that case. And Mr White saying "Money isn't as valuable to our organisation as knowing who to trust" at the end implies that Le Chiffre is not part of 'the organisation' and is just a 3rd party contractor. Anyway it just seems to be a very tenuous and unnecessary link, as with Silva.

Spectre is just as equally a dramatic romance as it is action adventure and the main theme should've reflected such, Smith's version is more a swan dive. Billie Eilish's No Time To Die is awfully put as well and I feel won't represent any of the emotional themes, if they demanded on using her, Everything I Wanted could've just as easily been remixed as it was already equally popular at the time of NTTD trailer release. Everything I Wanted plays as a blaisé of contemporary love in a loveless society, which is perfect for Bond as they're literally enveloped in layers of deceit, espionage, and death that shadows their love.

I'm in the minority when I say this is one of the best Bond movies. I thought Daniel Craig's James Bond was at his most complex in this film. Instead of just looking at Lea Seydoux and smashing her, he took care of her amidst her father's death and fiercely protected her against her enemies. He sort of acted as a father figure, which showed him to be at his most empathetic. Maybe Christoph Waltz was overhyped or something, because when I first watched this movie in 2021, I really didn't have a problem with his villain. After seeing Dave Bautista in Army of the Dead, I could definitely see him getting deeper, more substantial roles. Drax as Blofeld?!? THAT would have been an amazing casting choice.

Would have been way cooler actually

@@JoBloOriginals Before I reply, a little disclosure: I absolutely love the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. I believe they are the best movies from the last decade. Therefore, I may be a bit biased when it comes to the cast. That said... Not only would Bautista have been a cooler choice, I feel like he would have had no trouble filling the role. He has evolved in a very short time into a very thoughtful actor, and that evolution is easy to plot between Gotg Vol. 1 (where he was muscle and comic relief) and Vol. 2 (where he portrayed a much deeper Drax). He keeps getting better as time goes on, too. I wish the Bond people had more faith in his acting. They basically took a step backwards with his evolution.

There are a few 007-Films I don't like, including "Diamonds are forever" and "Die another Day". But "Spectre" might actually be my least favourite entry in the franchise, even though it it technically better, on its own terms. The reason for that is that it commits the cardinal sin of making previous (superior) movies weaker. It lessens "Skyfall" by retroactively making Silva a Spectre-Agent (that he had his own agenda, like Goldfinger, seperate from any bigger Organisation, was part of why he was such a strong villain) and it lessens the entire Craig-era by having Blofeld be the Author of all of Bonds Pain... and why? To get back at him because he felt neglected as a child. I can't get behind this. All the more tragic, becase "Spectre" has a lot going for it. Craig, Fiennes, Harris, Whishaw and Kinnear are all in fine form here, Bautista is a menacing presence, the Opening Tracking Shot is fantastic, the Movie is *beautifully* shot and I really don't mind the Action Scenes too much, either (the Train Fight is actually great). The suspense created in some moments (like the Specte Meeting or the Scene with Mister White) can be cut with a knife. But everything completely falls apart once Bond and Madeleine arrive at Blofelds Crater Base. Nearly everything after that point, despite *looking* great, is (outside of a few good bits) just a big fat disappointment story-wise. Combine that with Waltz being a surprisingly dull villain, there being no chemistry to speak of between Bond and Madeleine and that the Villains big scheme (which Q easily foils) doesnt account to much and the final act just falls flat on its face. "Diamonds are forever" had sharp dialogue and camp value. "Die Another Day" is so early 00s it hurts but is fun once you turn off your brain. Neither ruined previous movies for me. This was the beauty of a Film Series consisting of stand-alone entries. Even if you have a bad 'Episode', the next one starts off from square one and is bound to be an improvement. I have a bad feeling about "No time to die", to be frank. It could go both ways at this point. It has the potential to end the Craig-era on a high note, retroactively making "Spectre" better in the process... but it could just as well prove to be the one that broke the camels back.

Oh boy this one is a total slog to get through. The theme song is bad, the story is a jumbled mess, and the villain was so disappointing. Some of the action is good such as the plane chase through the mountain and the fantastic train fight. Having the world record biggest movie explosion is cool, but you feel nothing because it just happens so fast. Bond shoots some storage tank once and it's enough for the entire complex to explode. 🙄 The worst Bond movie next to Quantum of Solace

Having Christoph Waltz playing Blofeld in this movie was some kind of "monkey paw" effect, he is the perfect actor for the role, and he played it in one of the worst movies in the franchise. Is like if Idris Elba would finally be casted as Bond, only to star in Die Another Day.

I think with Madeleine Swann they were going for some meta literary reference with Proust which ended up going nowhere. I like Mr. White and I'm glad he got a scene. Quantum is criminally underrated though. Bourne-esque quick cuts are rancid, yes, but Bond fighting for the little guys, going against the wishes of UK and the US, helping a woman get her revenge without asking for sex, are absolutely gigachad moves.

Admittedly, I fell asleep for large parts of this one, but I feel like someone in photography was an MGS4 fan. The ending was reminiscence of the ending of MGS4: Act 3's ending, not in action or story, but location, photography, colour pallet, and setting (despite Bond set in London and Snake in 'Somewhere in Eastern Europe'). I also remember the beginning having similar colour pallets (though set in of opposite sides of the world). The reliance on in MGS4 also reminds me of how this film did a lot of telling and not showing in regards to the reemergence of SPECTRE and past villains being their agents. Also, Judi Dench's zoom call felt like one of those never ending codec calls. I do kinda also wonder if that 'C' stood for something else that was changed in post or after test screenings.

6:19 i actually like the idea of drawing all of Craig's Bond films into one giant story arc. and it's not really a stretch. by this point, we already have Mr. White as the common connection in both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. he acted as a go-between and a cleaner for SPECTRE when things go wrong. you could assume thay Le Chifre and Dominic Greene were its numbered execs (#2, #3, etc.), each had his own enterprise but under the control of SPECTRE. the oddest one to connect was Skyfall because Mr. White was absent and the film had a different tone than the others. but Silva could simply be a hired gun employed by SPECTRE due to his history with MI-6. the reason why this film that was intended as a big reveal fell a bit flat, wasn't cohesive, was because they didn't have a blueprint ready for the Bond-SPECTRE universe. they made up the connection on this sequel, which is a heavy story to undertake for just one film. there was not enough buildup of Blofeld/SPECTRE in previous films, only a vague clue that Mr. White worked for a shadowy organization that is embedded everywhere. (one biggest reason why MCU works is because they had set up the blueprint for the universe prior to making the individual films.)

Hey Chris and JoBlo. I hope you see this. I want to thank you for doing this series. I was introduced to Bond at a VERY young age by my Dad and have always been a fan. This series has been great and I've agreed with Chris more that I have disagreed. Saying that, this film whiffed big time for me. The need to tie all the previous plots together was horribly ham-fisted and took me right out of the movie. Thankfully I think a number of studios have now realised they can't really do an MCU as easily as they think they can.

3:20 I'm not sure I'd call 1917 an "all out masterpiece". IMO, it was OK. There was attempted melodrama and yet, the whole thing (to me at least) felt dry and boring. It could never be a Hacksaw Ridge of Saving Private Ryan.

This is the only James Bond movie I ever watched where I went right after, "Time to get a new actor to play James Bond to give the franchise new life." I am actually dreading No Time to Die if Craig gives the same type of performance he gave in Spectre-- phoning it in emotionally because he doesn't really enjoy being Bond anymore. My biggest problem with the Craig era is we have never seen him fully embody all that it means to be 007 as a company man. He has spent his entire run as James Bond, except for Skyfall, as an outsider who seems to resent MI-6, and off doing his own thing. Skyfall teased with Ralph Fiennes last line "Ready to get to work Bond?" and Craig's response "With pleasure, M" that we would finally see Craig take on the mantle of everything Bond is by the next film. Instead he runs around on his own little vendetta again for the vast majority of Spectre, and walks away from MI-6 again at the end. Truly disappointing. No Time to Die has a lot of work to do in my mind to win me back to the franchise again. If this Bond does not truly want to be Bond, time to get a new Bond who does.

Did anyone spot the torture scene lifted from the first James Bond book after Ian Fleming died? There are several lines from the book called Colonel Sun. The book was by Kingsley Amis wring under the pseudonym "Robert Markham". It is a fabulous read and deserves to be a movie in it's own right. There have been elements lifted from it before, such as the kidnap of M. It is arguably better than Licence Renewed by John Gardiner, but it has to be said I have a soft spot for the Gardiner Bonds and some of their plot ideas have been lifted for the films too.

Skyfall waa great and all, but it had that "home alone" type ending that ended up killing M which I really hated. Spectre was good. But I felt it needed more polishing work on its execution especially with regards to the whole Blofeld thingy. It probably looked good on paper. By the way, still wondering if that Spectre cat survived the explosion.
