I think it's the fact it's an 80s movie, vs all of Connery's other ones. It has a Scarface feel to it, or the mood most 80s films have, because it was a period that was cynical but far from the truly modern cynicism that started taking hold in the 1990s. The 80s were the fantasy of the past mixed with a certain amount of verite, and this film is really camp, too. Connery and Carrera together are SO CAMP.

I actually recently rewatched this one right after Sean’s passing. Yep- it is definitely VERY 80s! It also has quite possibly the worst score in film history. But ..... It still it has alot going for it ! It had terrific villains - Blofeld, Largo and especially Fatima Blush are all terrific. (Barbara Carrera of course,is as hot as ever !) It also had style, witty dialogue and even a couple of cool action sequences. But the best thing it has going for it was Sean Connery returning as James Bond. Sure, he wasn’t quite as hard edged and nasty as he once was - and was much closer to the humorous side of 007 as popularized by Roger Moore than his old “you had your 6” self - but he was still as cool and smooth as ever. Without him, this is unquestionably not a good movie lol... But with him as Bond one last time here - it’s still a fun movie to watch!

I went to see this in the cinema when I was 16. Had grown up with Connery as Bond - Moore was fine in his first two outings but the scripts became a joke after that and I stopped watching after Moonraker. 1983 was a chance to see Connery as Bond on the big screen, so I went with my younger brother. There was no way we would have considered Octopussy. I watched the film again yesterday - I had previously thought it dated, but am inclined to see all Bonds as products of their time - and I have to say I really enjoyed watching it again. Watching when I was 16 felt like they were desperately trying to capture past glory: watching again when I'm 53 (older than Connery was) I see it differently. It's a non-canonical movie which is far more in touch with the James Bond spirit than the official films being churned out by EON. And Barbara Carrera makes the film!

I expected Never Say Never Again to suck honestly, but I loved the franchise (as a kid). It was far better than I expected. Gorgeous women, great action, some real laughs and a decent villain, as well as the best female bond villain ever in Barbara Carrera. Sean Connery still funny as hell (some of these lines are his funniest ever, whether he or the writers wrote them I would love to know), and very charismatic, even in older age. No doubt Connery was still the star here. It's hard to quantify what he has, because he is at the same time more brutal and dangerous than the others, and yet, in a tux, he has more convincing swagger than any of the others. I like the Dalton movies more now than I did, but he's too nice, and Moore and Brosnan can get rough, but the period those movies were released made them PG kiddie fare ultimately and those two actors were a bit too pretty. Even young Connery wasn't that pretty. He was a jerk, that was the point. NSN actually BENEFITS from being off the grid. They could make it wild and gritty again, and that's really what I need from Bond. The modern Bonds are too serious and the character is too weak and dominated by Mommy M (finally dead). It's Barbara Broccoli ruining the male aspect of the character. The whole point of Bond was for him to be a refuge for male audiences - a single man being totally competent and making decisions on his own, NOT some victim of bureacrats or agendas. They make it all about the sexism now, but Bond was as much a symbol of individual freedom as blatant masculinity. Dirty Harry had a similar sort of dump the boss process in his decision making. That's really what men want to see, (and some women also, since most women to this day agree that Connery was the best). The other Bonds are best also when they are off the office plantation.

I think Never Say Never Again is very unfairly criticised purely because couldn't use the gun-barrel opening, Monty Norman's James Bond theme and has quite a lighthearted tone similar to Diamonds Are Forever (which I also think is underrated for a lot of the same reasons NSNA is that I'll talk about here). Personally I really appreciate NSNA's uniqueness and I dare say it's more entertaining than Eon Productions original adaption of Thunderball which at times felt overlong and bloated. It also obviously gets compared with Octopussy is it coincided with the release which while a pretty solid entry in the series, was starting to feel a bit stale and needed a fresh start which wouldn't really happen until Timothy Dalton took over the role in 1987's fantastic The Living Daylights. I know if I was given the choice in 1983 to see either Octopussy or Never Say Never Again, I'd choose NSNA and I'd still choose it today. The film is full of incredibly witty dialog, fun action scenes and best of all, Sean Connery returns after a twelve year absence and even though he's greyer and considerably older, he still has that magic and charm he had from his first few films. Connery looks like he's legitimately having fun here which is almost infectious and really helps the entertainment factor. This film was also actually smart enough to use Connery's age to it's advantage and write the story around an aging Bond being brought out of semi-retirement to stop the theft of nuclear warheads which was incredibly fresh in the 1980's and wouldn't be utilised again until Skyfall in 2012. Roger Moore was three years older than Connery and his advancing age was never acknowledged, women almost three decades younger than him just seemingly fell for him and he never clicked in the action scenes like Connery. Over-relying on stunt doubles (even for running scenes) and back projection which hurt his movies, especially 1985's A View To A Kill. Diamonds Are Forever did a similar approach in that considering Connery was older and a bit more portly, they made the film a straight-up comedy rather than an action thriller which was pretty clever. Never Say Never Again's action scenes however are much more kinetic, Connery does what he's able to and there's no overuse of stunt doubles and hokey back projection. The horse jump is still pretty awful though. Never Say Never Again is a unique Bond film which while isn't perfect, is definitely a breath of fresh air in the later Moore years, Connery is on top form as an older Bond and Klaus Maria Brandauer is an interesting villain. Kim Basinger as the Bond girl isn't amazing and the jazzy soundtrack doesn't work in some parts but it's just part of this film's unique appeal. It's just a shame Phyllis Hyman's beautiful theme was rejected in favour of Lani Hall's. Don't be put off by traditionalist Bond fans rejecting this movie just because it's not an Eon Production, it's a great time as a lighthearted, spy romp and Sean Connery giving his farewell performance as Bond is something you really don't want to miss.

This was the first Connery Bond I saw as a kid in 1983 (cinema in Lincoln, now a shopping centre!). I agree with most he looks better than he did in Diamonds, and this is worthy over a few of the other Eon jobs. Especially No Time to Die (but let's see how that next one pans out 😂)

Considering the fact that Bonnie Raitt's singing voice on the song, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" sounds like gravel being dragged along a piece of sheet metal - or to put it another way, her voice sounds like she is suffering from a case of severe constipation - she's no one to criticize the excellent James Bond Main Title Song, "Never Say Never Again"(from the film of the same title) sung/performed absolutely superbly by Lani Hall in 1983!!!!

This movie OverAll was fantastic. I LOVED Never Say Never Again..more than the vast majority of all the other Non Connery, Canon 007 flicks. I think NSNA is DEFINITELY a top 5 James Bond flick including them all..

In 1997 I was taken for a drive in Merlin Minshall's Singer Le Mans. He was the very chap that inspired Ian Flemming to create James Bond. It still had a piece of aluminium screwed to the aero-screen to deflect the wind because he was quite a tall chap apparently. It was a death-defying drive, (I hate being passenger). The Singer's new owner had heard I had just driven across the Sahara in my homebuilt car (KSK 362), so invited me to dinner. However, after dinner now thinking I fancied myself as a racing-driver he felt the need to impress/terrify me, which meant I was nearly thrown out of the car twice around a country track he clearly knew VERY well! A mad experience and the closest I shall doubtless ever come to the REAL Bond. 🏆🇬🇧
