Man of Steel: The Best Superman Movie?

There's been a lot of drama surrounding Henry Cavill's tenure as Superman. Too much. In 2013, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel premiered to excellent box office, and fans loved Cavill as the new Superman. To them, he was the best of both worlds, as he had brought some of the same heart to the role that Christopher Reeve did in the Richard Donner movies but also did enough of his own thing that it wasn't a full-scale homage. This was a common criticism levelled at Brandon Routh when he played the role in Superman Returns. Yet, some fans took issue with director Zack Snyder's darker take on the Superman mythology. The film ended with a polarizing climax that saw most of Metropolis destroyed during a battle between Superman and Michael Shannon's General Zod.
Of course, the divide between fans grew exponentially following the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, to the extent that Zack Snyder's Justice League was taken away from him, reshot and released in a shockingly revised version by Joss Whedon that almost ended the DC Universe on the big screen. In the end, Cavill, despite almost reprising the role following a cameo in Black Adam, would find his run as Superman truncated.
In this episode of DC Revisited, we reexamine the movie that started it all, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. Does the film hold up ten years later, and did Henry Cavill ever truly get his due as Superman? As host/editor/writer Tyler Nichols explains, this was a role Cavill was seemingly born to play, with him having already come close to playing the part in a version of the character depicted in the abandoned project Superman: Flyby by J.J. Abrams. We examine Man of Steel's reception and enduring legacy, with Michael Shannon's General Zod and Antje Traue's Faora-Ul set to return as antagonists in the upcoming, much-hyped DC-reset movie, The Flash.
Do you think Man of Steel is, arguably, the best Superman movie? Let us know in the comments.

Growing and watching Superman the movie and the quote for that movie was ( You will believe that a man can fly ). Christopher Reaves was a great Superman and I never thought that I'd like to see another man in that costume. Brandon did OK with Superman Returns. Henry came in with a really good cast to help. Mr. If you build it, he will come man himself and Mr. Are you not entertained as Kal-Els dad. Amy Adam's did a very good job playing LoLo. Even though I will never put a person about Christopher, I can put one man on the side of him and that's Henry. I was so happy when Henry said that he was coming back to play his role again. Then very mad when they said nope, never-ending we are going another way now. I wanted to see Black Adam and Superman tee off together. But I guess that's not gonna happen now. Heart broken is all I can say.

This is by far one of the greatest origin stories we've had for comics. Yes, there was controversy with the destruction and Supes killing Zod, but when you look at Christopher Reeve killing Zod and then smiling it's nothing. Given WBD's recent announcement that Dead Boy Detectives is going to Netflix, the push for Netflix to lease the rights to the Sndyerverse is gaining momentum. March 18th, we run the hashtag once more. If you're replying to say "drop it", "let it go", "it's not happening" or blah-freakin'-blah, shove it! That’s is complete BS, they deleted that scene for a reason. Superman depowered Zod, then crushed his hand likely turning every bone to dust and erupting every blood vessel in his body. Then throws him full force into a ice wall and he fell to his death. Zod was human, he was no longer a threat. Cavill superman killed a full powered Zod that was about to murder an entire family. It was a killing that needed to happen and was done expertly. Man of steal for me is the greatest superman movie ever made and while I grew up with Reeves, Cavill is superman!!

Man of Steel is a fantastic film. I am a huge Superman fan and the movie was everything I always wanted to see in a live-action Superman film. It got my friends who always thought Superman was boring, interested in the character. My father, who was a big Marvel head back in the day, loved everything about it. The best thing about it to me was that the film remembered that Superman truly isn't the All-American Guy, he's an immigrant, a refugee. And in America, especially nowadays, immigrants are NOT wholly embraced, loved, or even trusted at first or even at all. A being like Superman existing on Earth would cause all kinds of issues both personal, political, and international. Clark being hesitant to reveal himself and Pa Kent's fear of his exposure makes perfect sense in that kind of setting. The fight scenes were a marvel to watch and loved how dynamic, destructive, and almost overwhelming it all was. This is what a Superman-level threat would look like. Of course there would be massive causalities and destruction. It's Superman's first day on the job after all. I can understand some of the criticisms but most just come off as really shallow and just comparing this movie to other incarnations which goes against the point of the entire film which was to build its own identity. Man of Steel is a great film. And is indeed my favorite Superman movie.

Most people that criticise and rubbish it, are fans of the TV series and die hard Reeve fans, and many probably have not even read the comics like those who watch the Marvel movies. I was a comic reader, and wasn't fussed it wasn't done exactly the way it had been before, or followed the same typical boring formula. It's one of my favourite comic based movies ever. Cavill really showed, the doubts, fears and worries, of a young man trying to find his place in the world. Wondering if he was more human than alien, alien than human, would he be accepted, did he have what it takes, and was he ready, to be the protector of mankind. He showed the stress and strain of having the weight of the world on his shoulders, before making the descion to become Superman. A lot of people watching didn't appreciate that, which was a pity. It wasn't that dark, we have way too many of these movies with jokes, clowning around, love interests, and appear to be made for young children, I am glad this wasn't one of them.

@@rn6312 Is that right up there with Snyder's whole "comic book accurate" take on Batman? Ya know...the one that "never kills" as hes blowing people away with automatic weapons lol. Get the fuck outta here. You're the same people that get all buttmad when hes not wearing his bright red underwear outside his suit (which was originally done in the comics as a means to show they were actually wearing clothes and because of the limited availability of colors at the time). Or when you think the quintessential batsuit is gray and blue. News flash. Batman was always meant to have a black suit in the comics (with the exception of 70s Batman)....its just that in 2D media, there are only so many ways to express that - so you have to show the ways the suit would reflect light and still be able to show detail. Black, shiny objects typically reflect a gray or blue color back to the observer. Man of Steel was a top notch film and an exceptional take on the character (mostly due to Goyer's and Nolan's involvement). Its just a tragedy the rest of the franchise did not follow suit but...the majority of the writing talent had mostly left after MoS. Afleck's Fatman didn't help matters...but that was really the fault of Snyder's shitty casting in that regard.

No offense to Henry, he did what he was supposed to, but this movie is awful. Zach Snyder loves spectacle not story and on his way to having a city-destroying fight, he undermines Clark's upbringing by having his parents so paranoid that he has no reason to become a hero. I can't get over his father telling Clark that maybe he should have let children die to protect his secret and then dying a preventable death because he still was trying to protect his secret. I have never seen Superman let someone die to protect his secret identity until Zach Snyder took over. There's a reason Zod was in Superman 2 before. Jumping right in with Kryptonians before any other villains doesn't allow room to establish his character, which is why Snyder's Superman doesn't have any. He's very blah. And it only gets worse as the Snyderverse continues.

Superman killing Zod is not murder, killing someone is not automatically murder. If it was, we should be imprisoning every soldier on Earth, murder is considered to be unjustified killing. Zod was an active threat to the wellbeing of the human race and to Superman, so Superman killing him was not murder but a form of self-defense. He would never go to trial for this because he didn't commit murder. He didn't want to kill him, he didn't enjoy it, and he only made a split-second decision to save people. He's not a murderer. Superman is not responsible for the destruction of the Metropolis. He's still new to this job, he's a young Superman and inexperienced. The blame solely falls on Zod who is responsible, so no, the blame is not on him.

Wut? Fiora wasn't "memorable"? Must be the reason why many fans were clamoring for her to show up somehow again since that film. Man of Steel is a terrific film, and personally the more I watch it the more I come to realize how great it is. From the casting, the action, the story arc, and even those choices that some considered bad, it is great all around. (And let's not forget that amazing score by Hans Zimmer). Those choices all had a purpose. Unlike nowadays when we hear terms like "subverting expectations" or "deconstructing" thrown out emptily to make it seem a project is deeper than what it actually is or that there was forethought put in the project, there was actually purpose and thought put on the decisions in that film. Much like Batman Begins had shown in greater detail how and why Bruce Wayne became Batman, MoS shows how and why Clark Kent becomes Superman. It is easy to dismiss this as something that had been done already but it wasn't. Be it the Reeves movies or the Routh one we usually saw a fully formed, already experienced Superman or how he discovered his powers, but not how he became the hero we all know. That's what MoS was doing. The other aspects many have issues with is that the moment he puts the suit on many took that as meaning he was that fully formed, experienced Superman and thus had trouble reconciling the fact that by the end of the movie he still isn't. He is many things but not yet the beacon the world knows. It is his first mission and he barely just got into the daily planet. He is on his way to being the Supes we know but his story arc to get there won't get resolved until two movies later when, by the end of Justice League (the 2021 good one and not the crappy 2017 one), you see the iconic character now in personality and all. Snyder and co. were playing the long game with the DCEU, which clearly WB didn't have patience for. And that is the thing with Snyder's style that rubbed many the wrong way: love his style or hate it he wasn't spelling everything in detail in the style people had become used to with Marvel movies. His films communicate as much just visually as they do verbally, and trusts the audience is intelligent to figure it out. In rewatching MoS, BvS EC, and ZSJL, it is clear there was a clear goal and vision to the whole story that many missed on first viewing. We weren't starting with the characters at their fully formed best and as we have come to know them iconically, but at different points a step early to have them develop into those iconic characters when everything was said and done. Even the much maligned Lex Luthor interpretation of the character in BvS, which makes more sense on second viewing, is starting to be the Lex we know by the end of JL (2021). In any case, MoS is probably the best Superman movie. Sad we never will get to see the fully complete vision of what started with that movie and those characters.

The casting was pitch perfect. The script and directing left A LOT to be desired. The final conflict at the end is ridiculously contrived seeing as the Super Weapon is a machine that can terraform any planet into a Krypton-like world, Superman could have easily been like "Hey, I get you wanna rebuild Krypton, and while I think Krypton has had its time, why don't you head to Mars, the next planet over out from the sun (which is already devoid of life) and rebuild Krypton there. Once you're settled we can figure out a better way forward for Terrans and New Kryptonians." Secondly, they were WAY off the mark with Superman as a character. His greatest superpower (and greatest weakness) isn't his strength or invulnerability; it's his passion, nay, compulsion to help the greater good. And this comes from both of his fathers; one gave him the abilities to help the greatest good in unimaginably epic ways, the other gave him his love for humanity. This can be best contrasted by Glenn Ford's line "You are here for a reason. I don't know whose reason, or whatever the reason is... I don't know. But I do know, it's not to score touchdowns," compared to Kevin Costner's reply to Clark who had just asked if he should have let a bus full of his classmates die, "I don't know." A better line would have been "Of course not, son. Every life is valuable. But you have to be more discrete until you're really ready to show the world this side of you." The fact that this version of Kal-El is hesitant to come forward and do the right thing is a slap in Superman's face. I don't entirely blame the script, but when you pair that script with a director who took Watchmen's cautionary tale and made him to be the hero, you know he's not the right director for arguably the greatest symbol of hope, peace and justice in pop-culture of the last century.

The thing I never understood about the complaints of Superman killing General Zod. In Superman II from 1978, he crushed Zod's hand and threw him into a crevice and Lois kicked Ursa into another crevice. In Man of Steel, he was forced into making a compassionate decision based on the people in front of him he could save and he did. Why is the Zod's death in Superman II not criticized as much as Man of Steel's? Regardless, this is one of my favorite superhero films of all time, and I find it incredibly comforting, hopeful, and engaging. Batman v Superman had a lot of flaws but there are a lot of scenes and messages that I find really engaging. the 2021 Justice League really captured the feeling and message that was started in Man of Steel, and I loved all of the characters especially Cyborg, and Batman.

Because Superman doesn't kill. I mean, that's a thing. The comics spell it out over and over. In Superman 2, you *can* interpret it as Superman killing Zod. But we don't see him die. We don't see a body, and at that point it doesn't really matter, he's defeated and the story is over so there's no need to address it further, which the comics definitely would. But it's still the kind of thing they could definitely being him back from if they wanted to. In any case, it's framed differently. Zod falling into an ambiguous fate is not the same thing as Superman straight up snapping his neck and then screaming in angst. Which kinda fits the whole tone of MoS, but also isn't how most people see Superman. I mean, Snyder/Goyer's take on the character is basically Superman for people who don't like Superman. Needless to say, the people who already liked Superman just fine the way he was didn't care for it.

@@sim4344 I understand what you're saying; people didn't like the direct display of him killing and preferred the overt method. I know Superman hasn't killed much in the comics; the only thing I can remember was Doomsday, and the thing after Crisis where he smoked General Zod in the pocket dimension with the Green Kryptonite but yes I understand your point and to be fair, I stopped reading comics in the early 00s so I don't know what's happened since then. I guess I like the direct display of the choice to kill Zod because it makes him put his values on the line, and make the hard call. The film to me is more or less a trial of his values and what he stands for; he did the one thing he didn't want to do and it hurt him deeply. It's why he took care not to harm Lex Luthor in BvS in my mind.
@sim4344
@sim4344 Жыл бұрын
@@LDrumsOhio Y'know, if they'd handled Zod the way they did Doomsday, I wouldn't have minded it nearly as much. In Death of Superman, Superman has been doing everything in his power to stop Doomsday or steer him away from Metropolis and protect as many civilians along the way as he can. (As opposed to just knocking each other through buildings, which I guess does look cool.) And when the moment comes, he doesn't visibly decide "I'm going to kill Doomsday." Instead, Superman goes down swinging. He's just trying to stop this monster. Wailing on it with everything he has. Which just happens to be barely enough. That's my main problem. Because if Superman had the strength to kill Zod like that, he had the strength to stop him in any number of other ways, too. But the writers didn't want that. They wanted "What if Superman, but dark and gritty?" So that's what they wrote.
@LDrumsOhio
@LDrumsOhio Жыл бұрын
@@sim4344 I view the Death of Superman series a little differently because at that time we were dealing with a mature Superman. He was aware of his powers for the most part, and at this point we were like ten years post Crisis, just finished the Zero Hour event and were dealing with a very strong and confident hero. In Man of Steel he wasn't out publicly, and really hadn't fought any real enemies until this time nor faced any crisis until this point so we're seeing him relatively fresh and as far as we can tell by story cues, the time from scout ship to General Zod's arrival is perhaps just a few months. With that said, I frame his decision to kill Zod, one that is a result of him being young, and unaware of who he is and his powers. The city destruction is more or less a result of Zod's decisions, and then a result of his inability to truly comprehend his abilities. On the Dark and Gritty; I see the tone, but it doesn't bother me because we'd just come out of the Chris Nolan Dark and Gritty Batman era. I think what drew me to Man of Steel, and why I still love the film and consider it one of my favorite DC films is because it felt more grounded, and the darkness contrasted his struggle as a character where we see him grow into the hero we'd come to love. That's why in Batman v Superman when he goes to testify in Congress, and the attack occurs it's such an impactful moment because he deeply feels the loss and his inability to do anything. Regardless, thanks for the discussion, and being kind and respectful. A lot of folks get really mad talking about this, and try to attack me as a "snyderbot" even though I just enjoy the film without really considering him.

Henry Cavil's superman to me has more of maturity, physical and relatability than Christopher's Superman. Man of Steel in my opinion is the greatest Superman ever made not to take away from the incredible depiction by Christopher and awesome script of original Superman, MoS to me is simply on another level in turns of different take on Superman in more of modern take, storytelling, emotional connections, Zack Snyder's amazing action sequences, original scores, visual and inspiration for hopes representing by Man of Steel. Man of steel magnified how selfless is like by some of the characters throughout its storytelling mark the purpose and belief come to made what Superman is becoming and about. Man of Steel had successfully transform the typical superman feel into more of contemporary and fill with more of meaning and purpose for the character! Oh, Michael Shannon's villain role in general Zod was fantastic as well and the final battle scene where Superman has to make the toughest choice of his life to kill the only other Kryptonian left in the universe in order to save vulnerable human family stamp his no kill mentality. Imagine a man with his super power but has no concern for killing...that is what make superman the greatest superhero, he realized that he can easily kill anyone in the universe, but he has the ultimate choice to NOT DO SO! That is what Man of Steel my greatest pick for all Superman movies, the true purpose of superman was beautifully shown throughout the movie.

Superman Returns vs. Man of Steel - A Directorial Showdown Superman Returns (Directed by Bryan Singer): Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns” was a nostalgic journey to the classic Superman era. Singer’s direction pays homage to Richard Donner’s original films, capturing the essence of Superman’s character. The film feels like a love letter to the past, but it struggles to break new ground. Singer emphasizes character-driven storytelling and maintains a sense of light-heartedness, staying true to the Superman mythos. Cinematography-wise, the film boasts a warm and vibrant palette, reminiscent of the comic books. Singer’s choice of practical effects adds a touch of authenticity to the action scenes. However, the visuals, while solid, lack the grandeur and innovation found in modern superhero movies. The tone of “Superman Returns” is largely one of reverence, embracing the hero’s iconic status. It carries a sense of hope and optimism, catering to fans who cherish Superman’s unwavering moral compass. But for those seeking a more contemporary, gritty take on the character, Singer’s approach might feel somewhat dated. Man of Steel (Directed by Zack Snyder): Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” represents a bold departure from traditional Superman storytelling. Snyder’s direction is marked by its epic scale, intense action sequences, and a willingness to deconstruct the Superman mythos. He brings a fresh perspective, giving Superman a more complex and humanized portrayal. Cinematographically, “Man of Steel” is a visual marvel. Snyder, known for his distinct visual style, incorporates stunning CGI and innovative camera work. The action scenes are breathtaking, showcasing Superman’s power on an unprecedented level. The film’s dark and muted color palette complements its serious tone, creating a more grounded and relatable atmosphere. The tone of “Man of Steel” is notably darker and more somber than its predecessor. It delves into the emotional struggles of Clark Kent, making the character more relatable. This interpretation explores the moral dilemmas faced by a superhuman living in a world of ordinary mortals, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. In conclusion, while Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns” pays homage to the character’s roots and maintains a lighter tone, Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” takes a more contemporary and daring approach. Snyder’s direction, coupled with breathtaking cinematography and a thought-provoking tone, makes “Man of Steel” a standout in the Superman film canon, offering a refreshing take on the iconic character.

In many aspects, the BEST Supe movie of all time. While Chris Reeve's portrayal is iconic - no question, being as close to the original concept, Cavill's is truistic with the world's current way of life and environment.

M.O.S. was the pits. Totally nonsensical plot and illogical decisions by most characters. "Confused Matthew" summed it up very nicely.
