It seems that most criticisms of this film are not based on errors or failings of the film itself (plot holes, bad acting or dialogue, etc), but more the film not meeting a certain expectation that the critic had before seeing it. That's not the film's fault, that is the critic's fault for creating expectations of a movie prior to seeing it. Judge it based on itself, don't judge it harshly because it isn't what you wanted it to be, i.e. a film exactly like the Donner film. Also, we already had a modern film that was based on the Donner film...and it sucked.

Thanks for this excellent review! When I saw the film in 2013, I loved that it showed a "real world" reaction to Superman's existence. The 1978 film (like the comics) had the world accepting Superman without question. I do not think the US military would ever do that. And Zack was correct in going with that approach. I also knew Clark was protecting us from Zod after only having just become Superman. So, he had a lot to learn; and Zack showed that. Henry's performance is great and I'm very excited to see his performance in Justice League on March 18th.

Most underrated superhero film. Next to BvS. Great cast. Wonderfully in depth story. And realistic. I love Marvel films for abit of fun and escapism. But love the DCEU more because it tackles superhero films in a realistically light. Particularly around death, and collateral damage. Which the MCU kind of just ignores.
@terrylandess6072
@terrylandess6072 3 жыл бұрын
The mention of Superman having to learn to protect the innocent from collateral damage is hinted at in this video, but in BvS, it's Bruce Wayne's mantra. Bruce opens BvS as someone horrified at the sheer scope of the damage inflicted, it clouds his judgement driving his narrative and at the end he has to explain to Wonder Woman 'why' he baited Doomsday to the docks. The MCU's recognition of collateral damage is skewed and only serves as a plot device to create the accords and 'split' the hero base up for a 'Civil War'.

I love how now that Zack's JL came out, people are going back to MOS and BvS and acknowledging them as great movies. I think that people didn't like them because they didn't fully understand the movies, imo one example is the martha scene from BvS and people are now understanding what the scene actually means. It also helps that we can now see the connection between all three films especially with the flash scene from BvS. I loved these movies from first watch.

The story and characters never really felt solid and the extra stuff that was put back in was just not needed. I really only watched this movie for the introduction of Wonder Woman, who did not disappoint. What should have happened was a MoS2. Get the character more comfortable in his skin and coming to terms of being Superman and living his life as well as the world fully accepting him. Then you could have done BvS.

But I recently rewatched it (after watching the Snyder Cut of JL) and was blown away by how amazing that movie was. I felt that it was an extremely realistic portrayal of a superman. Henry Cavill is simply amazing at playing a vulnerable Clark Kent while also playing a powerful Kal-El. It's simply incredible to see Zach Snyder's vision for this universe.

It's a beautiful film. Hoping Nolan and Snyder work together on more DC projects moving forward. They really knocked this out of the park. They needed Hahn Zimmer doing the score on the Snyder Cut for Justice League.

I'm just baffled at how many people didn't like MOS....I freaking LOVED IT. As a guy who grew up reading comics it ticked all of my boxes...Superman was a goddamned ALIEN!!!! Treat the premise as such!!! And Zack did just that....( so did Smallville by the way)

I just watch MoS last night. It's been a while since the last time I saw it. I watched after Snyder's cut & even BvS UE. Even before I remember liking it then but watching it again I really enjoyed it and appreciated it more. MoS is indeed ahead of it's time. Snyder's Vision if DCEU gets better with time. You understand & appreciate it more.

People dislike MOS, because they're holding on to the cheesy ideology of the character. For them, superman's inherent "goodness" is a representation of what humanity ultimately is. It's like they're afraid to admit humanity is dogshit. I think that humanity being nearly irredeemable, yet him feeling the need to save us anyway is a much better interpretation of the source material.

When I was younger when this came out, I never really understood why Jonathan refused to let Clark just use his powers, even when he was about to die. I kinda get what they were going for, but I just thought it was stupid (same as most people and even media reviews and on youtube) and moved on with the story. Watching the movie again, it really feels heavy and grounded. I'm so glad the cultural climate has changed wherein comic book movies are now deemed realistic and grounded unlike the 2000s to early 2010s era. This movie was truly ahead of its time. edit: I f***in cried on Jonathan's death scene, goddamn.

I nearly missed the theatrical run of MoS. I had severe cbm fatigue at that point, was pretty fed up with the MCU formula, and I was also feeling jaded with on screen versions of Superman up until then. As a fan of Superman comics since the late 70s I'd always felt let down by his depiction on screen. But I ended up seeing MoS anyway, and came out of the film absolutely buzzing, having been put through a huge range of emotions. A rare experience for the genre. It blew me away, both as a comic book fan and as a movie fan. It's still my favourite cbm. Let's see if ZSJL can topple it 🙂

_Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan's "Man of Steel" stands as the greatest Superman movie of all time, masterfully blending realism and modern storytelling to reimagine the iconic hero. The film's ahead-of-its-time vision brought Superman into today's world, grounding the character with a depth and complexity rarely seen in superhero films._ _Hans Zimmer's powerful score elevated the emotional and epic narrative, while the stunning cinematography captured both the grandeur and intimacy of Superman's journey. Henry Cavill perfectly embodied the essence of Superman, reflecting the modern graphic novels' portrayal of the character. Snyder and Nolan's approach has inspired many directors, including Patty Jenkins, James Wan, Matt Reeves, and David Ayer, to follow in their footsteps, aiming to bring a similar level of realism and depth to their superhero films._

What superhero film from 2008 was BEST? Iron Man or The Dark Knight? -The Dark Knight What superhero film from 2013 has proven to be the BEST? Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World or Man of Steel? -Man of Steel What superhero film from 2016 has proven to be the BEST? Civil War, Doctor Strange, or Dawn of Justice? -Dawn of Justice What comic book film from 2019 was BEST? Endgame or Joker? -Joker What superhero film of 2021 was BEST? No Way Home or Snyder's Justice League? -Snyder's Justice League What superhero film of 2022 will almost certainly be proven to be the BEST? Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder, or The Batman? -The Batman Marvel won the popularity contest for 10 years, but DC will always have the greater legacy of films. The MCU films all being stitched together means that as the MCU as a concept declines and fails...it will lower the value of every entry in the MCU, the best and worst alike. Meanwhile, the stand alone masterpieces of DC films will always stand out and stand the test of time. Even if some of the films are terrible, those will be forgotten but they won't bring down the other great films.

you gotta give superman a character arc and here they got it just right. the initial struggles to fit in, lower your head and the final self confidence that allows him to explore beyond his comfort zone (which is so aptly reflected by hans zimmer's score "What Are You Going to Do When You Are Not Saving the World")

Henry Cavil's superman to me has more of maturity, physical and relatability than Christopher's Superman. Man of Steel in my opinion is the greatest Superman ever made not to take away from the incredible depiction by Christopher and awesome script of original Superman, MoS to me is simply on another level in turns of different take on Superman in more of modern take, storytelling, emotional connections, Zack Snyder's amazing action sequences, original scores, visual and inspiration for hopes representing by Man of Steel. Man of steel magnified how selfless is like by some of the characters throughout its storytelling mark the purpose and belief come to made what Superman is becoming and about. Man of Steel had successfully transform the typical superman feel into more of contemporary and fill with more of meaning and purpose for the character! Oh, Michael Shannon's villain role in general Zod was fantastic as well and the final battle scene where Superman has to make the toughest choice of his life to kill the only other Kryptonian left in the universe in order to save vulnerable human family stamp his no kill mentality. Imagine a man with his super power but has no concern for killing...that is what make superman the greatest superhero, he realized that he can easily kill anyone in the universe, but he has the ultimate choice to NOT DO SO! That is what Man of Steel my greatest pick for all Superman movies, the true purpose of superman was beautifully shown throughout the movie.

The same people who hate this film are people who clearly aren't comic heads and are aware of Supermans depth/power and of course his alternative versions. Zack truly did his HW on bringing this to light. Also people gotta remember this was Supermans DEBUT, when someone who is finding out who they are and is lost, their reality is not going to be all good vibes only and bright. Every Superman previously we have seen they already know who they are, so their reality is more full and balanced. This version was not the case, so i felt it was incredibly accurate and realistic for a literal Alien landing on earth and trying to assimilate to Earth. The damage...OMFG!!! What do you expect was going to happen when 2 aliens that discover god like powers clash around BUILDINGS?! LOL! This is how DENSE humanity is when HW is not applied. You can't BOX Superman in. His powers literally are limitless for a reason. MOS is a true tribute to what makes Superman...Superman and the true Comic Heads. MOS is a beautiful piece of ART in every way!

One thing I just noticed about the Zack Snyder DC films is that he acknowledges all the collateral damage Superman and the other heroes cause in their battles. It was all the damage that Metropolis suffered in Man of Steel that caused Batman to be so against Superman in BvS. Heck, this comes full circle in the final battle, as Batman lured Doomsday to an abandoned harbor not only because the spear was there, but also because he wouldn't have to worry about civilians getting hurt and potentially killed. In the MCU, it wasn't until Civil War when it was finally acknowledged how much damage the Avengers can cause in their battles.
