A classmate at the small, private Christian school I attended at 13 years old when Over the Top came out was a close relative of Bruce "The Animal" Way, one of the competitors. He invited The Animal to visit and he told about his experiences on the film, but the awesome part was he brought in the arm wrestling table and let everyone use it who wanted - it was awesome! Kids were arm wrestling all day long on that. One of my best memories from jr. high!

Just bought Over the top and Cobra on blu-ray, over the top was one of my favorites as a kid, I didn't live with my father but remember vividly visiting him one time and watching it over the top.Tango and cash never gets old, buddy cop perfected.

Yes I'm a huge Cobra aficionado too. I can't walk past a supermarket Walkie Talkie system without wanting to grab it and say "Hey Dirtbag, You're a lousy shot, I hate lousy shots, You wasted a kid for nothing, Now I think it's time to waste you".

Cobra and Over the Top was truly when Stallone was in his prime and on top of the world. Who else could get a big budget film about arm wrestling green lit? And Cobra is just so awesome. It's this weird mix of a Dirty Harry esque buddy cop film crossed with an 80's style slasher film. It's my favorite midnight type movie to throw on late on a Saturday night when I don't know what to watch. His character was so cool too. My only complaint is I heard they cut a lot of scenes and I feel like it was a little too short. I wanted more. It's the one Stallone movie that should have gotten a sequel but never did. Would love it if they released a Cobra extended edition.

The most badass thing that Stallone did on film was in Cobra, when he cut the slice of pizza with scissors
@laurarules3642 Жыл бұрын
its been years since I watched that movie but I believe in the same scene he takes his gun out of its holster twice and puts it on the table. I always remember that error when I first watched it on VHS
@willshaw3493 Жыл бұрын
Don't forget that a) he froze an already cooked pizza, and b) he ate that pizza without heating it back up. Oh yeah, and he subscribes to the local paper so he can throw it on his barbecue pit every day. This is supposed to show that Cobra is cynical and views the media as bullshit, but this attempt at character is ruined when in the next scene he's instead watching the TV news while cleaning his gun.
@negativeindustrial Жыл бұрын
He kept his gun cleaning kit in an otherwise empty egg carton in the refrigerator, as well. 😂

Over the Top was filmed at an Armwrestling tournament that was put on specifically for the film. They had qualifying events all over the world culminating in the event at the end of the show. As you said John Brzenk was there and he genuinely won the truck in the film, other world champion armwrestlers that were there were Johnny Walker, Cleve Dean (two of the action figures you showed) and Allen Fisher.
@williamshaw9047 Жыл бұрын
I always thought "Are armwrestling and truck driving that linked that a brand new semi would be something your typical contestant would want?"

These are 3 of Stallone’s best non Rocky/Rambo 🍿 Movies. Tango & Cash is my personal favourite of the 3 as Sly and Kurt Russell make a really great pair (especially as it originally was supposed to be the first onscreen pairing of Arnold Schwarzenegger with Sylvester Stallone). It also created the classic onscreen line “Fubar” which Annie recently used for his recent Netflix series.😊

I really think him and Arnie dropped the ball when they did the major u-turn and went from starring in violent high octane action films with sky high body counts to doing comedies . I know a lot of people enjoy the comedies they did but there core audience liked the action movies and Sly and Arnie truly believed they were such superstars that the fans would just follow them in any direction . I basically stopped watching their movies when they went to comedy and their careers never reached those highs ever again. I would rather have another cult classic like Tango & Cash or Predator than Stop or my Mom will shoot or Jingle all the way

Cobra and Tango & Cash have always been my favorite Stallone vehicles. Cobra seems like a cheesy 80s knock off of Dirty Harry mixed with the slasher genre, but I like it for what it is. (Plus I wish they made an airsoft gun replica of his Colt Gold Cup 1911 pistol, honestly) Tango & Cash is a cool comic book style buddy cop flick and a great way to close out the 80s too. Its like what happens when you take a B movie but you give it a $50 million budget, cast some of the best action stars and a perfect over the top cartoon villain.

sometimes movies are just supposed to entertain you and make you feel good after watching them. Is "Over the Top" a masterpiece of theater arts? Of course not, but it's a feel-good action movie, with heartfelt moments, a killer soundtrack, and a thrilling moments throughout. Is it cheesy 80s goodness? Absolutely...and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's endlessly re-watchable, to me that makes it a good movie despite what the critics and box office says.

Imo Stallone's most overlooked/underrated film of this period is the excellent Nighthawks (81 )with Sly as somewhat burned out NYC undercover robbery division detective Deke DaSilva drafted reluctantly into a fed task force to take down master terrorist Wulfgar (Rutger Hauer) on a NYC rampage. Great supporting cast: Billy Dee Williams, Nigel Davenport, Joe Spinnel, Persis Khambatta. I wish Nighthawks was better known. Of course I love Cobra too, it really is an excellent action thriller.
