Demolition Man: Sylvester Stallone's Biggest Cult Classic?

1993 was an important year for Sylvester Stallone. After a long string of flops, Renny Harlin’s mountain epic Cliffhanger was the much needed international hit Sly needed, with the film helping to re-affirm his position as one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood. But, before that movie had ever come out, Sly was shooting his second film of the year, once which, in the end, would make less money than Cliffhanger, but would go on to achieve legendary cult status. Almost thirty years later, it remains Stallone’s most popular film featuring a character that isn’t named Rocky or Rambo. The movie, of course, is Demolition Man, co-starring the great Wesley Snipes and a young Sandra Bullock!

It's Wesley Snipes best role. He was so perfectly cast. You can't take your eyes off the screen whenever he's on and he looks like he's having an absolute blast playing Phoenix.

Right? To me, it's the epitome of an action movie. Just how it looks from a cinematography aspect (supringly he was a one and done director, which seems crazy in hindsight). It's easily the most Joel Silvery movie in existence. Which is saying a lot. Great dialogue, lots of action, cheesy and clever. It's a movie that never takes itself too seriously but knows it's seriously awesome.

Also, I'll add it passes the movie theater test. Meaning... if EVERY Sly Stallone movie was playing in a movie theater at the same time. What movie would you see? For me, it would be tough between Rocky 4 and Demolition Man... but ultimately, Demolition Man would win out.

I read somewhere years ago that Warner Bros. didn't like the original cut and ordered the filmmakers to cut out a lot of the more violent action scenes. Scenes that were cut were a fight scene between Stallone and Jesse Ventura towards the end and a big shootout in the climax.

I loved this movie. Not a huge stelone fan, even back then, but I thought this was awesome. Edit: the way they did that running sequence with the electric gun was pretty awesome. I remember seeing a behind the scenes thing on HBO as a kid and they cut out each bar on that metal wall and placed those tiny "squib" explosives on them. So they had to do that run scene as a practicle effect in order to get it to look right. If im not misfaken this was the movie where they used paintball guns with little balls of gunpowder to simulate bullets hitting metal, or hitting a hard surface. They would shoot right behind the actors and the tiny balls would mix their chemicals and make a small spark simulating ricochet off metal lol. If this is the movie they did that in they did a lot of crazy stuff to pull off the special effects in it.

This and Cop Land have to be Stallone's true hidden gems, at least from the 90's. Imo they're his best films.

A great movie! At the local cinema they had one of the police cars from the movie set up on display with the lights flashing. i think i saw Demolition Man and Cliffhanger about 3 or 4 times each back then

I think I watched this movie around 1998, still love it and it needed a sequel showing the merge between the two worlds.

There should have been a sequel long ago for Demolition Man.
