Despite flopping theatrically in 1986, Highlander, starring Christopher Lambert as an immortal warrior named Connor MacLeod, was an international hit at the box office and cleaned up on home video. After a disappointing sequel (Highlander 2: The Quickening), the decision was made to spin the franchise off into a TV show, Highlander: The Series. The show, which starred Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod, ran for six seasons, spawning a spin-off (Highlander The Raven) and two films (Highlander: Endgame Highlander: The Source).
In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, we take a look into the show's origins, including the pilot, which featured Christopher Lambert as Connor, the spin-offs, feature films and the show’s enduring legacy.
Do you remember Highlander: The Series? Let us know in the comments!

One of my favorite ideas from the series was that the "good" immortals had quietly and collectively decided that having a close-knit circle of friends and allies to hang out with through the rest of Human history was more valuable than whatever the Prize could be. The good guys choosing friendship and love over personal power was the morality the rest of the show was built on.

One of my favorite things about the Highlander series was the use of flashbacks as a B-plot. It gave us a glimpse of what immortality was like for these characters, and really let everyone stretch their acting, costuming, and set design.

The memories would be very strange. Only reason memories are strong is if you are constantly dwelling on them or sharing them with other people. I could easily believe 5000 year old immortals would misremember nearly everything about their past or even forget things from several identities ago. It works great in series but would be a psychological mess for them. Best case get 20 years in an idenity, worst case get a few weeks before another immortal shows up and requires you to move on. Not sure how a modern reboot would cope with the impossibility of country governments and general public not knowing about it in a world of mass surveilance and instant communication. Probably why it is so hard to get off the ground.

Highlander was one of my favorite TV series of the 90s. It had everything you could want from a show: great action sequences, a charismatic lead, and decent historical set pieces, given the limited budget. Its focus on history, seen through the eyes of Duncan MacCleod, was what made the show distinct from all the other shows of that era. Very few shows, especially at that time, brought history to life the way Highlander did. It even made people, who didn't have much of an interest in history before, take an interest. The show did for history what MacGyver did for piquing an interesting in science.

In 1994 I worked in a nightclub in Vancouver that held an event every Thursday night. It was called "Chocolate Milk" and it was one of the first spaces to use ambient lounge sounding music in a relaxed setting. It was the place to be at that time, and many "famous" people would show up. Adrian Paul was one of those regulars, and he was a complete joy to deal with. Always super friendly and just a nice guy. Why not just have another of Duncan's endless supply of past Immortal enemies do the deed then spend Season 6 having Duncan (with help from Joe & Methos) track down the villain while meeting interesting new Immortals along the way (i.e., use this premise to introduce the candidates for the new series)?

This is misleading, but accurate, as Byrnes did serve in the military, therefore is a veteran, and is disabled; the loss of legs just happens to be unrelated to his time in the military.

I will always love this series. It’s definitely a product of the 90’s, but it’s a superb example of character writing. I agree with you though. Queen’s theme definitely takes a wtf turn about a minute in. As for the reboot idea though, I feel like Henry Cavill would be an excellent casting. After his performance in “The Witcher”, he definitely has range and holy crap can he manage sword choreography well!

@@MrB00mbang I definitely do not argue that.. For me, nobody, really nobody can ever replace Adrian Paul as a TV series Highlander. My sympathies for both actors are based solely on their respective roles I've seen them in (both movies & TV series ones). If there's a reboot I'll probably give it a try, but I admit, I'm prejudiced - mainly because all of the reboots I've witnessed (movies / series / games / etc..) sucked noodles. To me, adding more CGI / action / speeding up the pace / adding stupid drama and similar 'cool & hip' shenanigans.. All only underline the obvious lack of any new ideas, shallow scripts, bad acting, etc.. And I want none of it. Let me give you a personal-opinion-based example of something different to the above - Twin Peaks: The Return - David Lynch didn't any kind of a reboot or re-imagining (which is more often than not just as bad thing to do), but instead developed a brand new continuation to the original story and, thanks to the hard work put into making it happen, in 2017 it came to life to glaring reviews and widespread acclaim - as well as a pleasant, personal feelings of having the opportunity to watch another masterpiece.

I also liked the idea but I think it was one of the weakests aspects of the lore of the franchise because it was executed poorly: their stupid big-ass tattoo (what a discreet element for a secret society to have), the almost comical ease in which they were nearly taken down by one immortal that did not even knew about them like a couple of days beforehand, the also seemly easy way their rouge elements could act using their resources to go against their very core function and that moronic storyline in which there was almost a Watcher-Immortal war. I love the series and even now rewatching it, it still holds itself quite well but also had a lot of silly and nonsensical elements, but hey that's that the story of the franchise, a premise full of potential and with some great stuff but also an example of wasted potential.

I had my first crush with Connor Macleod. The movie was in 1986, but I watched it first time when I was 10, in 1989. But then I saw the series and I totally fell in love with Duncan. The series are great, they have impressive background content, the costumes, the idea they descent from Gilgamesh. It's really interesting if you like mythology. I cried so much when Darius died, to learn later that the German actor Werner Stocker, who played the Roman General who becomes a monk after killing a Saint man, died. Homeland is my favourite episode combining 2 loves, Scottish landscapes and Vikings. Queen playing the main theme is the perfect cherry on top. You're right, the part played in the intro is the best and the first time I heard the whole song was a little shocking, but now I love it and even call it "my song", you know? "I have inside me blood of Kings..." I must say that the version of the series I gree up watching in Mexico was dubbed, but the voice he had in Mexican spanish was simply perfect. It's not possible to find the dvds in Mexican spanish, I even contacted the actor who voiced Duncan and he didn't know where to find them. Whatever the language, I'm 42 and still love it. So I ignored it while continuing to watch Kung Fu, but after a few weeks the commercials for Highlander wore on me until I finally gave it a shot. I believe it was the 2nd Paris episode ... the one with the assassin mime "Kuyler" ... and the flashback that showed Duncan first meeting Tessa on the river boat tour on the Seine. I only caught half that episode, but was intrigued. So then I tuned in the following week, and watched the episode with Roland Gift guest starring as "Xavier St. Cloud." I think that's just one of those things that made so much sense to regular people that Hollywood would never do it because it's not subversive enough. My thoughts are that they didn't want to spend any money, the people with the money wanted a female show (and played favorites) and they believed in formulaic TV since they figured their could ride the coattails of The Highlander brand. No one wanted to gamble with their money and those who did have money, weren't really fans. When you don't have a strong showrunner or decent writers, everything ends up as a procedural.

I remember as a kid one night I was going through the channels on my television and seen this dude jumping through a glass ceiling and the other guy grabbed a sword, I was a fan from that moment. The one going through the ceiling was Richard Moll and the other guy grabbing his sword was Adrian Paul. The guy playing Richy was also in the store stealing antiques. McCloud thought Richy was the immortal, but it was Moll. I believe that was the first episode. Joe Dawson and Methos were the coolest characters after McCloud, those 3 were always the closest.

I still own the first four season box sets. While the series hasn't aged very well, I think it's a great snapshot into what early 90's tv shows were. Like a time capsule. And that makes it pretty awesome to me.

I remember watching this in college. I couldn't stop watching it. Loved the series more than the movies.

I had chuckle when you mentioned that Adrian Paul was picked because of his appeal to men and women. When the series was being aired my wife and I would watch it together. I told her once "I am not gay, but dang, that's a good looking man!"

It definitely works. My brother wanted to be as cool and handsome as him I well I was a straight pre teen girl 😂😂. Amanda worked vice versa. We both admired her bad ass attitude he fancied her, I wanted to be her

I really wish they had done a "Tales From the Crypt"-style show told from the Watcher's perspective. Each episode or few episodes focusing on one particular Immortal. As for the film reboot...my first choice is James McAvoy. He's another Scot and he's got sci-fi/comic book/geek cred.

LOVED this show. A great ensemble cast, Paul did such a great job and you could tell he enjoyed playing the role. Rather than a reboot, a new movie should be a continuation in the same world; don’t deviate from the current lore….

My wife and I watched the movies and the TV series. We liked the TV series the best. We even named our dogs at the time Duncan and Tessa. Adriane Paul was believable as a warrior because his moves didn't seem to lack power. My wife cried when Duncan killed Richie after Duncan had a dark quickening. The "Watchers" was an unexpected plot twist. I really enjoyed this series. There was actually a cross-over episode to a vampire show that my wife watched which was called Forever Knight. Not sure if there was actually a K in there or just Night. Another TV series about the Highlander immortals could be worth a try?

Used to do highlander conventions with a friend. Stan used to watch my son while I had to run errands for my friend. I had the fun of keeping a few of the actors entertained. Good times. The best time was when I got to talk to Elizabeth, Joe and Stan for a weekend.

The movies never did much for me but I loved the TV show. Great characters, great stories and great sword fighting, what more can you ask? There were some interesting guest stars, Marion Cotillard has a part in one of the early episodes.

I always thought that they passed on so many creative opportunities with this series. They could have set entire seasons in specific time periods, instead of only having flashbacks. Maybe there was no budget for that, but It just felt like Duncan waited centuries while building grudges until he got to the 90s and only then he started to take heads. I actually think that a reboot could be interesting.

Highlander always used flashbacks from the past and was set in the present day, that's a unique characteristic of the movies and series and I think this concept works quite well. Also, heads were taken in flashbacks as well sometimes, although most of the time it was about introducing characters that would meet again in the present. Nothing wrong with that. Actually, I would personally not prefer season-spanning storiy arcs as it is often the case nowadays. Episode based stories have their advantage.
