The show's strength was in it's storytelling and really pushed the idea of "walking in someone elses' shoes" to get people to think more. Like Star Trek and Picket Fences, Twilight Zone and a slew of other shows did back then. We could use a show like this nowadays.

The bit where he tells Al they can't change their own lives was because Al literally ignored the reason they were there. Whereas Sam was changing his life while also fulfilling the reason he was there. It's a small difference but let's face it that scene at the end where Al gets to dance with his wife as a hologram is possibly one of the most heartbreaking scenes I've ever seen.

And he was telling his sister about the Beatles and she asked what happened to John as he was her favourite and al just said “don’t tell her Sam”. I always took that ending to mean that Sam continued on improving people's lives and rewriting our bad history, because he was one of the rare people that could do so. I remember being very sad that he never got back home, but realizing that he was so selfless that he would sacrifice the rest of his life to making the world a better place. That being said, I took me a couple hours of feeling dismal about that ending before I came to that conclusion and went from deeply sad to mournfully happy that his good work would continue...

Thanks for the video which I really enjoyed watching. I liked how you picked out some of the memorable ones that I liked such as Pool Hall Blues and Future Boy (when the inventor almost manages time travel). However, I was surprised that you didn't make more about what happens to be my favourite episode, The Journey Home Pt 2 Vietnam, which ties directly to the MIA episode from the end of Season 2 and the very last ever episode. As you said in MIA, Sam says that he can't break the rules and hence decides not to help Al. Then you move forward to The Journey Home Pt 2 and in a scene that resonates so hard and always tears me up, you realise that Al prevented himself from being rescued which consigned him to 4 years of being a POW that directly leads to him losing his wife. He made the most amazing sacrifice to save Sam's brother and unfortunately the scene is never given the time for Sam to fully realise what Al did. Fast forward to the very final episode and I really love that Sam has never forgotten about Al's incredible act that saved his brother's life and hence he sacrifices himself from ever going home to do that one thing for Al that he should have done previously. I think it's beautiful and I don't think it means Sam keeps leaping because how could he without Al (or someone else's help). Hence the series ends with Sam making the ultimate sacrifice for his best friend. If that isn't beautiful and touching, I really don't know what is.

The reason quantum leap could get away with “breaking the rules” is because they said from the beginning they weren’t sure what the rules were. So when he leaps into the civil war it was a family member, creating a genetic link going back. If he jumped into any rando then that would have been an issue. However when the break the rules I have a bit of an issue with that. Also a reboot would work if Sam’s research had been hidden and someone found it then they started leaping. Since they wouldn’t have the complete notes the new leaper would have to discover the rules again and some new ones. It would be a continuation, and a reboot at the same time.

A reboot COULD work, and a new cast could be great, and a new show could be better than ever...but it would probably be awful, and damage the franchise. When is the last time an old classic came back, replaced the main characters with younger stars, and DIDN’T suck? It certainly wasn’t lately. I wouldn’t trust anyone in this day and age to not ruin it. They’d sideline Sam as a gimmicky guest star while they focused on the hip, amazing young woman who replaced him, and the brilliance she displays that puts his scientific talents to shame. She’d be poorly conceived, horribly written, and excruciating to watch. I would love more QL, but I hope they don’t risk it because I’m tired of every franchise getting ruined.

The evil leaper program was also a very interesting twist on the "leaping" storyline. Sam was a good person at heart so in turn he invents a time machine to better peoples lives BUT the evil leapers origins were never explored. For example when or where did they come into existence and was it because of a hand link left behind in "The Leap Back" or was it the info given to the CiA agents in "star Light" . It was a great arc to an already great premise of leaping.

I had no idea the ending was controversial. I'm a huge fan that watched the series premiere and then straight through to the end. The finale was brilliant, a wonderful way to send off these characters. God the Bartender pretty much spells out what happens, as you noted, but then somehow you don't carry it through to the intended conclusion: Sam never returned home because he chose the selfless path, continuing to leap through time to help others rather than return to his own life. This is even foreshadowed in my personal favorite episode, where Sam and Al switch places and Sam remembers he's married but Al never told him. His wife in the future pleads with him to stay with her there, but Sam re-enters the machine to leap into Al and save his life, even though that means he returns to leaping and will even forget his wife again. But he does it because he can't leave Al to die in the past, and it's the right thing to do. So when God the Bartender offers him the same choice (choose to go home to your old life or keep helping people), Sam doesn't return home. The alternate ending completely undermines that sacrifice, which is no doubt why it was cut.

I hear what you are saying but Sam couldn't continue leaping into different people without a guide or an operation to look after the leapees in the waiting room. The show has demonstrated this over 5 series. I think that as another commenter suggested, that he changed Al's life which meant that he popped out of existence. Hence making an incredible sacrifice like Al had done for him and his brother. That, to me, is why he never got to go home.

The episode wasn't intended to be a series finale, but a setup for a sixth season, the idea that Sam could now leap into the future. The cut ending was nixed by NBC who were also responsible for the onscreen text because they weren't going to renew the show and therefore it seems they didn't want it open-ended.

Watched the Leap Home 1 and 2 when my Mom was dying of terminal cancer. We both had tears in our eyes at the scene with John Lennon's imagine.

Loved this show. With all the old shows coming back I’m surprised they haven’t already at least talked about a continuing the show

There were some articles online earlier this year where it was being considered again. The casting would have to be spot on with great chemistry, though. That's one of the biggest reasons the show is so loved. The chemistry between Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell is fantastic in this show!

@@Sunflower8587 Their chemistry was so good that they brought in Dean Stockwell for a guest-spot in Enterprise as a very bad, bad-guy of the week. They got to play off each other in some pretty intense scenes, that I don't think would've worked without prior trust between the actors.

@@mandisaw Dean Stockwell also had a guest appearance as a bad guy on NCIS: New Orleans in 2014 with Scott Bakula. ❤ Everyone was excited about their reunion on Star Trek Enterprise when it happened. We were all waiting for an "Oh Boy" as a 😉 to Quantum Leap. It didn't happen but that's ok. It was just great seeing them acting together again. 😎🙂
