It very well could have been there. He worked out at two different gyms back then one of which was a Gold’s Gym and then another one and I know it wasn’t the Gold’s Gym I was there all the time. My dad trained with a lot of the pro bodybuilders and wrestlers at that time.

The truth is... the trailer made me want to see this movie. Nostalgic and tragic. I wanted a serious movie about this time for the family, wrestling and the world around it. I'm glad they didn't shy away from the truth for a more Hollywood cliché and kudos to Efron - he's become one of those actors who genuinely appreciate taking on roles that they can make their own.

They didn’t shy away from the truth? This movie is loosely based on the Von Erich’s at best. Kevin was nothing like the way he’s portrayed by Efron. The guy that played Fritz seems to be the only one who watched tapes to study character and mannerisms.

Just saw it today. Im from dallas texas. Wasn’t born during the Von Erich’s era but i grew up knowing alot about them bc of my father and my uncles telling us stories about how they would go to the sportatorium and watch them perform. It certainly is a captivating film if you’re familiar with who they are it can be an emotional rollercoaster the movie can make you laugh, relate to the strong love/bond between the brothers, it can be exciting and also be so devastating bc of the outcome at the end. If you aren’t familiar with the von erichs i would still recommend the movie imo its good enough to captivate the casual viewer into wanting to learn more about the von erichs

As someone who got to see it early I can safely say it’s a powerful and amazing film, I could see why Chris wasn’t in it pacing wise but personally I also wouldn’t have minded to see a bit of his story too with an elongated run time overall. Zach Efrons performance was one of, if not his best of all time. The raw emotion and drive was clear with his take on Kevin Von Erich. Definitely worth a watch even if you don’t know much about wrestling! ❤🙏

The film felted a bit rushed at times and there's so much more that could have added that really did happen. When Fritz Von Erich was dying of brain cancer, he pulled a gun on Kevin, saying, "You'd kill yourself too if you had the guts!". Kevin went to a very dark place too and stole a rifle from a gun store in Lubbock, Texas, hoping he would go to jail. The guys at the store recognized him and said, "We love you, Kevin!" and ended up not stealing the gun.
@JoshuaRyanErwin

Actually, he did steal it. Came directly from his mouth. He had a breakdown, and when he couldn't pull the trigger, he returned the stolen gun. The workers recognized and consoled him but didn't turn him in.

I just watched this movie. Some of the characters look pretty good, like the Freebirds, but what were they thinking about Kerry Von Erich? Kerry Von Erich stood 6’2 with the shape of the Warrior. My buddy’s mother was in love with him. She thought he looked like Val Kilmer in the face. Instead, they have a guy that looks like a beefed-up Elijah Wood. If anything, Zac should've played Kerry Von Erich. Two actors, one 5’8 and the other 5’5, playing the roles of two guys that were 6’2 😂. There was one part when they were battling the Freebirds, Kerry looks like a midget

I saw this movie this past weekend but more importantly this is such a great video movie review. I had it on playing while i was doing work in the morning and was able to follow along while working - means the tone and presentation is stable and predictable. The topics you cover are more professional than the other movie review youtubers i follow(ed) - i stopped doing it because it was exhausting listening to what i thought was a dumbed down take on movies to increase reach and "engagement" in a sense, your review doesn't take the audience's intelligence for granted and that's refreshing. A couple of thoughts - firstly i didn't mind the changes to the plot from what happened. Movies are not a documentary and the changes they made really helped the movie stay integrated with its goal. There's a part in the movie where Kerry immediately gets himself injured when IRL it doesn't happen for some time. In other scenes, they treat the kayfabe aspect of wrestling like it's a shoot. Fritz talks to Kevin like he "has" to beat Ric Flair, as if the wrestling is real. Kevin iirc is the one that goes ham and gets himself DQ'd fighting Flair because he couldn't cope. These events never happened but was necessary for the character development. I thought it was innovative to blur the line between shoot and kayfabe. while I wouldn't jump to a 10/10 i dunno where this movie falls in release schedule - i think it was actually released in late 2023 so hopefully it will be considered for awards. Also while I don't watch many wrestling dramas, I consider this somehow even better than Aronofsky's (The) Wrestler which upon introspection only touches upon one aspect of the effect professional wrestling has on its entertainers. The topic is grim and not for the faint of heart once you peel away the kayfabe and peer into the shoot. There's a market in that, and as long as producers and hollywood take us seriously, there's a wealth of stories.

I grew up in the Carolinas, so I was a Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling / World Championship Wrestling (WCW) so I didn’t get to watch a whole lot of WCCW but I remember on one of the ESPN channels world class was on there for a little while and of course I remember Kerry Because he went to the WWF for a while, and I never knew he was missing his foot that entire time, but I remember in the wrestling magazines when he died, and just how sad everybody was. I guess if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you knew this story so those of us that knew it it wasn’t as shocking to us but this was a great movie. It’s very interesting to sit back and watch reviews and reactions on KZbin to people that did not know the story, and just watch the shock on their faces as the story unfolds. I guess if you didn’t grow up and it’s just something you have known your whole life this is shocking, but this movie was done so well. I agree I think it is probably the greatest movie that touches the world of pro wrestling ever.

The Real Kerry though, the one who looked like an 80s action figure come to life far from the 5 foot 6 inch guy we got in this movie. It wasnt just an hilarious miscast of Kerry & a total omission of a brother that I had a problem with. I went into the movie knowing both & was ready to forgive it all if it was a good story. It wasnt. It was a total one note, shallow rush job of a story that has been vastly overrated

Anyone who is interested in this film should see the a episode from “Dark side of the ring “ the Von Erich’s really good watch the last brother is on it and goes through every detail of what happened in his family if it wasn’t for that episode I would’ve never known who these guys were and how legendary this family once was.

I grew up with World Class Wrestling and I had been to the Sportatorium to see a Von Erich match when I was a kid. My Brother and I would watch WCW in the hopes of seeing Kevin Von Erich and when he did show up, there was more hope that he'd use the Iron Claw. Then it seems as if Kevin just dropped off the map. I wasn't a big fan of David or Mike at that time. I did like Kerry, so I followed his career as much as possible and then he sadly passed away. Living in Dallas the rumors were ALL abuzz. David's death, from my Family's perspective, was that David was poisoned in Japan and Kerry and Mike were murdered to make way for other contenders. I didn't know what to believe. All I knew was that they weren't around to watch anymore and that's when I quit being interested in Wrestling. I just saw this movie last night and it was incredible. I did find it odd that they opted to mix Mike and Chris's character together as one for narrative purposes, but I guess it worked out ok. There was one interesting scene towards the end that if I were to meet the director, I would ask him about it. After Kerry dies and his soul awakens and gets on the boat, he leaves behind the coin that was tossed by the Father to see who would take David's place in the Heavy Weight Champion bout. This could mean that the coin was payment for the "Ferryman" for crossing the river. Or it could mean that the coin toss was the pivotal moment for Kerry because if it had gone to Kevin, things might have turned out different for everyone. I am curious if he meant it as both or one or the other.

I grew up in Plano Tx watching the Von Erichs. Loved World Class back in the day. Jeremy is a great actor but casting him as Kerry was a miss considering hes about half the size of Kerry. Still cant wait to see the movie!

The movie was good however, there were a few things that bothered me. One, Chris was never mentioned. I know he was the way younger than Kevin & Kerry, but he also wrestled and sadly killed himself too. They didn't delve into how tough on his son's Fritz was. Lastly, while Zac Efron is a good actor, he was way to buff to play Kevin. Plus Kevin has/had blond hair, Zac was in a dark wig.

Thanks for doing this. I loved the movie, but I have one nit to pick - no "Stranglehold"? Kevin VonErich was the main character, "Stranglehold" should have been in there as well. (The fan in me also wants "Bad Street USA", but I would go to a movie about the Freebird-VonErich feud.)

I have never cried so hard watching a movie. Since 8 Below about those Alaskan huskies has a movie had me sob all the way through. I grew up as a kid watching these guys in their prime among with my brothers and my mom. Really hit me feel watching this. Zac was incredible, as was Jeremy. So good. RIP Chris VonErich 🌹 Note: The guy who portrayed Flair was a fail.

A 10 and an 8. I hate Chris isn't in it but maybe for the story that was being told it was to lessen the darkness of the story. I'm still going to see if and I'll likely be crying my eyes out with the rest of the wrestling fans who are watching it

He did work in Kansas City and some in Georgia (with his brothers) and one WWF match in the early 80s as a favor from Vince Sr to Fritz (i believe David had one too, and the two older ones started earlier than Kerry who was still at U of H on a track scholarship).

I was at the premiere in dallas also. I'm the guy in the red shirt at 8:37 and as a texan that grew up with wccw the movie was a 6 out of 10. The pace of the film was extremely fast time stamps would have helped with all the major time jumps. A more in depth look at why Lance was brought in instead of a flash sequence would have been better and the fact that Chris von eric was left out was very distasteful. The few scenes of the actual wrestling was all over the place with the camera work on some scenes. The gentleman playing fritz was amazing the person playing flair just pure trash the film is decent but not great A24 could have done better. The film is a solid 6

Many fans have expressed dissapointment that in the world of the movie; Chris does not exist. I enjoyed the movie but thought through out that this change wasn't right. I think I love Kevin more, each actor really connected to those they represented. Holt as Fritz was so real, it was freaky, and these actors are really wrestling.
