I knew since nursing school that bedside nursing was not for me. I am a psych nurse for an organization and love it. I get really upset because I get many comments from other nurses and non-nurses saying psych nursing is not real nursing. Just because I am not at the bedside does not make me any less a nurse!

I’m a psych nurse too!! I love my job and the mental health field so much!! Bedside nursing and acute care are not for me either. Psych nursing is truly a a hidden gem in the nursing field and it takes a different skill set than other nursing but we are no less than other nurses !

I worked for over 20 years as a nurse coordinator in a specialty clinic. Patient care, plus so much more. Took critical thinking, assessment skills, education, loved it. I was able to use my nursing skills but worked 5 days a week, supposedly 8-5 but always longer.

Great video! I do wish you would touch base on not all home health nurses work at numerous homes. I do peds home care and I go to their house at 8am for my shift and I work until 5:30pm when mom/dad come home from work. We stay with one client the whole shift who needs high level of nursing care. Many nursing students don't even know about Peds home care! I get experience with trachs, ventilators, g-tubes, etc! It is awesome!

francesca paleracio Get your footing in bedside. A lot of home health companies do minimal training and it can be a lot to learn on your own. I’m a new nurse and I ABHOR bedside it’s the absolute worst. I’m stuck for 2 years, I know at the end I’ll have tons of knowledge and experience that’ll help me be a competent home health nurse.

Yes! I love doing peds home health :) It is so gratifying to build a relationship with the munchkins, babies, and kiddos as well as their families. You get to witness their progress developmentally and medically over time. Helping to wean off of vents and g-tube feeds is difficult, but so gratifying to help facilitate. Some of the patients are quite high acuity, and stable enough to be at home is not really stable so much as it is "stable". Many peds home health patients are very medically fragile and clinically complicated. It is definitely a different level of self-reliance working nights in this specialty, but one that I love more than anything else.

@@fdpc517 Not sure if you are still considering it, but I would definitely recommend applying to peds home health agencies. As long as they are willing to train you, and provide you with a good preceptor it's definitely worth considering. The pace of learning is not quite as overwhelming for a new/new-ish grad as a hospital setting. You learn each patient's routine, medical history, care, and baseline 1:1, which allows you to build a stronger holistic framework for understanding all aspects of your patient's care.

I started as a NICU nurse then switched into clinical research. I still have clinical days and some hands on nursing skills without having to be on my feet 12hrs a day, don’t work nights or weekends!

The only difference in what a RN and myself is pay. I make 50,000 a year while a nurse can make way more, but I don't have a college degree. Currently in nursing school prerequisites!

I like to work with different patients quickly and efficiently, the more people I can help and send off I am happy. Sounds like you’d do better in an OR setting or something in the background like infection control.

Anticoagulation Nurse here! I love it! I work from home, get the patient's INR lab results over EPIC, review their chart since last INR, and then manage their warfarin dosing telephonically. We work fairly independently, and develop keen communication and assessment skills. No two days are alike. I hope I can do this job until I retire. Never had a job I could say that about!

Community Outreach Nurse here! I started my career in cardiac step down unit and then a trauma floor, but I always wanted to be a community outreach nurse. Now I've been doing my dream job for some years. I have hours at the clinic but I mainly go were my clients/patients need me. I work mainly will vulnerable populations: sex workers, people who are homeless or in unstable living situations, people with substance use issues, and more. It's not a job for everyone, but I really like moving around the city with my backpack.

I was a psych nurse for a year and found that it was not for me. I never wanted to do bedside nursing, so after leaving psych I did phone triage for a primary care company for a little while. I now do utilization management and I have the golden schedule. M-F, 8a-4:30p, no weekends or holidays, quarterly bonuses. Sometimes I get down on myself for not being a "real" nurse but I have the schedule i always wanted and I'm mentally in a much better place than I was working in psych or doing clinicals in the hospital!

Love your videos Blake!! You are spot on, and as a nurse for over 30 years, and you make me laugh out loud even after all this time. The one thing we have as nurses is the ability to make each other laugh!! Thanks for showing all the opportunities out there. I hope the nurses who are starting out really think about the most important member of the team- the patient- as I am reading a lot of comments on how much nursing "sucks, etc?? There are a lot of opportunities, but before you jet off to work at a resort, or any other nursing option, take the time to really learn the profession, and how to BE a nurse. With COVID 19, my mantra of "everything begins with Med/Surg bedside nursing", was shown to be accurate in spades!!! Some of the craziest, beast-mode, like being at a war front, terrific nursing ever seen at my, and other hospitals!!! In the pause, I encouraged nurses who had never seen or done the things they had to do, to be proud, and to take the experience for what it is. Now the confidence level and appreciation for the job is palpable, even on tough nights. Nothing bothers or throws them off kilter now!! Kudos to all nurses out there and be safe!! No matter what type of nursing you decide to do, remember that you represent ALL of us. Corny, maybe, but true.

I worked as a CNA for 10 years and if it wasn't for kidney failure that got me before moving onto LPN and RN...I ended up on dialysis instead. Would you be able to help me find a program so I can advance further to LPN....or any other position where I am not so much "bedside" but more axillary...office, homecare(which I was an aide for several years so I know about care plans etc) or anything else I don't come into contact with those that are sick because of my weakened immune system. Love this, Blake. But I’m a Home health RN... I definitely don’t make my own hours and there is definitely not stopping between patients for a mandatory lunch break let alone a starbucks lol. I think things always seem a bit different then they are in reality. I suppose there are those that work per diem and make up their own hours. But not most of us. The thing to know about Home Health for those interested in it is to know you are out there on your own with your license flying in the wind so you should have a lot of varied experience because you see everything from new stomas to educate on, diabetics new to insulin, wounds of every kind you can imagine from wound vacs to profore leg wraps. We do IV maintenance and dressing changes/ foley care / gtube instruction/ suture removal and post op incision check from CABGs and +++. And the pt doesn’t usually have a hospital or electric bed so we are bending over beds and finding places on the ground to sit while we do leg wraps or wound care because sometime you go to a home and they literally don’t have a chair for you. The nice homes with AC in the summer are awesome, but more often than not you can be driving down a street of beautiful homes and the one we end up at is the broken down home with no AC, no parking close by and we are shlepping our equipment and supplies to get there. And the charting in a Home health environment has different regulations than other kinds of nursing since medicare guidelines govern our services. But if you’re a person you loves to be out and something different but likes to form relationships with your patients because they are usually on service a while... and you have a strong back lol, it’s an awesome job!

I worked as an agency nurse for a while and one of my many jobs was vacation relief one summer at a home health agency. I mean to tell you - these folks work hard! And often in very poor conditions. You have to get started very early because you will have a list of diabetics to get to and give morning insulin, and make certain they have something to eat. Then you'll start on your patient list for the day. You dictate your nurses notes as you drive between patients. It was exhausting and very long days. I would get home quite late. I would like to say that I really enjoyed working for the nursing agency. I was open to try anything so I did a lot of very interesting jobs : Plasma bank, IV team, every hospital unit from ER to psych to burn unit - I did them all because I was a certified critical care nurse. I think my favorite was recovery room.

I've enjoyed your videos so far. But I was disappointed (though not surprised) that geriatric nursing (AKA LTC) was not included. Congrats on five years as a nurse. I've been a geriatric nurse for THIRTY five years. I've tried other things, but this is what I love. We have no backup specialists. We are psych/urology/trauma/hospice/med-surg/respiratory all in one. And these days, we've been getting admits straight from ICU. Anywhere from 17 to 50 patients/residents. And in some places I've been the ONLY nurse in the whole building. But for those who want long-term relationships with residents and families, this is it.

@@oscarg1006 most of the time those places are hospices, there are for the elderly population that cant stay home because they dont have the physical and/or mental health necessary to take care of themselves. Those nurses dont work alone for 60 patients, that would be really dangerous and kind of impossible lol. The nurses have a team with them of LPNs and PSW, they manage the floor to make sure that everything is ok and provide care like vital sign, wound care, medication, mental assessment, admissions, palliative care... So yes there almost all in one nurse :)

@ChubbyBunny Rivera once you graduate it's pretty easy to get into Psych nursing which is basically a completely different field from bedside nursing so you really shouldn't be bummed out about it. Its basically night and day. Also correctional facility nursing is really different from bedside nursing as well.

I always tell people to work as a CNA in a hospital for at least 6 months when they ask me about becoming an RN. It gives you some idea of what you are about to go through as a nurse, especially if you have never worked in health care. It is rough and not for everyone. What do you dislike about bedside nursing? The answers will be a good place to start to let you know if you want to stay in nursing or get out. It is a very stressful job, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Your coworkers may be able to help you think of some other areas that you'd like better if you think you want to stay. You could start looking for other opportunities in your hospital system that are not as labor intensive as bedside nursing such as endoscopy or outpatient surgery. of Best of luck to you!

You can also work as a nurse for a liability Insurance company - reviewing claim files. Your patients are on paper only. You get to review the reported injuries, treatment plans, etc and advise the insurer if the plan is reasonable. This helps the insurer avoid doctors trying to pad the bills. It is a 9-5 office job.

I did clinical documentation the last 6 years of my career. You make sure the physicians are documenting all the diagnoses to capture the severity of illness and proper reimbursement. My long clinical experience really helped.

I have worked as an Investigator for our state mental health hospital. We investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults. It was a very challenging and rewarding experience. You forgot Telehealth nurses who answer for doctor's offices after hours and provide medical advice. They work in a call center and now they could be working from home. They provide medical advice to patients and can page out the doctors as needed, even advising patients to go to the ER if their condition is serious enough. I think some insurance companies may offer a nurse advice line for their members also where they provide medical advice and educate patients on their chronic conditions and how to manage them. I even heard an ad for I think it was a heating and air company promoting a nurse advice line for children that parents could call in for medical advice for their children.

I started as a CNA in a skilled nursing facility. Then a TMA in skilled nursing facility. Some assisted living experience too. Then LPN in 2013 I did skilled nursing, cardiology clinic, & foot care "in the home", ie home, assisted living, skilled nursing & senior rec center clinics. Then RN in skilled nursing, assisted living , & clinic phone triage. Next, Hospice Case Manager 😃

Ambulatory nurses wasn’t mentioned. We work Monday through Friday in out patient clinics. Many clinics have a nurse that works in a specialty. I am a phone triage nurse that will give medical advise to patients that call our office. I also give injections and manage warfarin dosing by checking INR’s. If you are burnt out from the hospital and want a career change, check this nursing job out. You are off weekends and holidays

As a veteran RN 32 years, I suggest bedside nursing at least one year out of school to get experience. Internship in ICU good too. Learn your heart rhythms 💜 and basic med-surg.

I agree with Celeste that a year of hospital experience is helpful for your entry level job. I learned pretty quickly that it wasn’t for me, but the hospital experience was something I was still drawing on decades later.

Agree, you'll need at least a year if bedside nursing in a hospital or TCU. Then consider Triage Nursing in a clinic. Wonderful experience!

I'm a community health nurse. I work for our county in a primary care setting. We typically work with underserved populations, and our patients face a lot of challenges. It is a rewarding job, but also frustrating. 70% of our patients are smokers, compared to around 16% of the general population. Our patients often struggle to just make it to their appointments, so when they are there, we really want to maximize this time. We have team-based care, and are part of a Coordinated-Care-Organization. I love my coworkers, and I have the best hopes for my patients. After two years I figured out that bedside care was not for me, but I am happy to be making a difference in the lives of my patients in my home county.
