Currently doing my medical internship and I respect nurses soo much. They deserve the same respect the public gives to doctors. When I was doing my obs rotation I learnt so much from the midwives, and currently doing my surgical rotation and I’m intrigued by how they manage the OR. They truly are the heart of the hospital ❤️

I'm a new grad and I've been on a med surg floor for about 3 months now. I like the floor but I don't feel like I'm being mentally challenged. When I graduated, I didn't have a speciality that I knew I wanted to go into so I thought med-surg would be the best fit because you get a mix of everything. I plan to do at least a year on my floor and then try something new, I think I want to go back to school and this video helped to show me all the avenues I can take. Thanks!

For clarification bc many people don’t get exposure to the OR: OR nurse, surgical nurse, and circulating nurse are nearly equivalent (there’s three spots on the list for basically the same specialty). Some both circulate and scrub or some only circulate or only scrub. Great list by the way.

@NurseMasterCharlieRN 3 жыл бұрын
Well, that's the beauty of nursing...During nursing school, your will do "your clinicals" in and on various floors/units. You will see which ones you like...and it is totally personal. For example, when me & a friend did our surgical rotation...he loved it, I didn't care for it much. I enjoyed it, but I could not see myself going day to day. Now, general med-surg is basic area to get exposure to being a nurse, become skillful, and fluent with time management. After about a year some nurses just love it become experts in med-surg. Some want a new challenge and venture into a new specialty. Sky is the limit... I have worked in Critical care---to management---prison nursing---education. Good luck in your decision, but you can work in whatever specialty you want to, and if you need a change...there are options!!!

Im graduating in 2022 from high school👩‍🎓 I had a question as to does the amount of years in certain medical fields should stop you from becoming that nurse ? I was thinking of becoming a ER nurse but a lot of the people I’ve talked to about are saying things like “ that’s so many years of school “ and it has got me mixed feelings about it. What advice would you recommend? Btw your videos are so helpful!😁
@NurseMasterCharlieRN
@NurseMasterCharlieRN 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica...I'm glad the videos are helpful! As for any nursing specialty...the years of school are the same...2 years for an associate degree RN or 4 years for a bachelors degree RN...Either one can become anytype of nurse...for example an ER Nurse...there is actually no "etxtra time" to go into a specialty. When I graduated, me and all my classmates graduated with an associates degree (ASN or ADN--whichever you like to call it), many of us went into specialties...ICU, ER, OB / Labor & Delivery, Ortho, and Med-Surg right after graduation. So there is no additional schooling necessary for specialties. We worked along side of new graduate BSN nurse...cause the degree doesn't change the years needed to go into whatever specialty. Sometimes people get nursing confused with Medical school for doctors....Specialties for MD.s does require many additional years of residency, and fellowship after they receive their doctorate degree and become an MD (general). I hope this helps!

You can possibly work in a OB/GYN office clinic, and or a health-related clinic as a nurse, however, positions may be limited to pregnancy / sex education, or general education, testing, screening, and or counseling. As for far as the pay, most hospitals pay a little better than a clinic. Those positions may require additional training, but not a "degree". It just depends where you live and what types of clinics and programs are available.

To answer your question...I am unaware of a spreadsheet for the various types of specialty certification...and i can attempt to help you...by sharing this... most all specialties do have certificates...such as ICU nurse have the CCRN, ICCU nurses have the PCCN, Emerg Nurses have the CEN, ...I would consider visiting the BRN (Board of Reg Nursing) website...and also maybe just google the type of specialty you are looking for and most will have an organization who "certifies" the nurse. Hope that helps!

@@NurseMasterCharlieRN Thank you so much for your reply! I have been grinding and learning rapidly! It is so awesome getting to talk to nurses all over the States. Already helping change some lives by increasing their income a tremendous amount in one case I'm working I may be able to help a single mother move jobs just an extra 30 miles away and jump her weekly pay by $1,000. I am going to look at the BRN for sure because as I get more comfortable/confident I do really want to get my lingo down, while understanding what the nurses I am talking to may be dealing with on a daily basis. Its hard to empathize when so much of what someone may be telling you sounds like another language. Really enjoyed the video and again thank you for the response!

First...Congrats on nursing school! As for becoming an NICU nurse..I would recommend some med-surg foundation, however, if you can work as an student nurse intern, a "tech" in a NICU, that would help you become ahead of the game, so when you do graduate you already have your "foot in the door" and have gained experience.

how do you become a nutrition and fitness nurse?
@NurseMasterCharlieRN
@NurseMasterCharlieRN 3 жыл бұрын
A fitness Nurse is a nurse who after becoming a nurse can acquire a certification in training, like a personal trainer. They can work to develop plans of care for patients to help them recover , or in day to day abilities. Kind of like a physical therapist. A nutrition nurse, can be one with an advanced degree like a clinical nurse specialist, and or training in nutrition to help patients with dietary issues, stomach problems, etc.

OR vs Circulating vs surgical nurse, what's the difference? I cant really seem to find it (:
@NurseMasterCharlieRN
@NurseMasterCharlieRN 3 жыл бұрын
They are very similar…a CIRCULATOR NURSE can work in the surgery suite ensuring sterility is maintained, and count supplies; the OR NURSE can help prep the patient before, during, and after in recovery of the patient…kinda similar to a PACU nurse; a SURGICAL NURSE can include both, but can also be a surgical “floor nurse” . I hope that helps.

@NurseMasterCharlieRN
@NurseMasterCharlieRN 3 жыл бұрын
Well, to become a nurse anesthetist, you must first become a nurse...whether a ASN/BSN...eventually needing a BSN, MSN...then on to nurse anesthetist school. To come an anesthesiologist, that requires medical school, to become a doctor...then specialize in anesthesiology.

Studying and becoming a nurse is the first step...if you are already a nurse, then usually you have to work in critical care for about a year...and also have a BSN degree.... then you can look for CRNA schools. CRNA school is usually a 2 to 3 year program...in the UNITED STATES you receive a doctorate degree!!!

Well a nurse can possibly work in the dental setting, as a nurse or nurse anesthetist...or a nurse can go to Dental School after fulfilling the undergrad work. BUT...Dentistry is a doctoral degree in dental medicine...the equivalent of a medical doctor's MD. You can't just go from a nurse to a dentist...there's a lot of schooling involved.

Is mental health nurse a specialty?
@mimim875
@mimim875 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, it is a specialty with different roles too for example Dementia nurse, drug addiction nurse, non medical prescriber nurse, community mental health nurse(CPN) just to name a few.
@NurseMasterCharlieRN
@NurseMasterCharlieRN 3 жыл бұрын
Yes... It is very much so a specialty...In the acute community setting, it is taking care of patients with many mental health issues such as schizophrenia, personality disorders and those who have attempted suicide...through monitoring, sitting in therapy sessions. In the community outpatient setting... kind of similar, but monitoring medication therapy, assisting in ensuring the pt is caring for themselves. I have work in a Prison Mental health area where nurses dispensed and ensure medication adherence and sat in group therapy sessions. Mental health a not a popular specialty, I believe because of a type of lack of awareness of mental health as a disease...like diabetes, etc. I hope that helps.

@NurseMasterCharlieRN
@NurseMasterCharlieRN 3 жыл бұрын
I would start at the BSN level...even though you have a pharmacy degree...Nursing is total different. You could do the accelerated BSN...that would let you bypass certain classes. I would get grounded in nursing before pursuing a MSN...as you will need a source of reference to apply to your MSN...and without a ASN or BSN, it would make it a little more difficult. Plus you would miss out on growing your nursing skills and assessment.
