Going over a not-so-great jobsite saw. This one has qutie a few issues. I did get this saw as part of a sponsorship deal, so as a courtesy to the sponsor, I don't mention the brand.
I hope some of the stuff I point out about this saw will help you in terms of what to look for when shopping for a table saw.

I personally don't agree with doing a "product review" without naming the product. There are some ethical issues with being known as someone who won't review a product badly. This makes it seem like you're the type of person who will gloss over minor issues so you don't have to withhold the name of the manufacturer, which defeats the purpose of a review. You even said yourself that at a certain achievable price this saw is worth purchasing. That's useless because we don't know what saw it is. Moreover, a company who sends you a product for review knows that there's a chance it won't get a good review. As long as you're fair about the issues you see that company should have no issues with you giving your honest opinion. If they do, they aren't an honest company that is worth advertising. I respect your choices here, I just disagree.

That's beside the point. If I was searching for a review on this saw I wouldn't find your review pointing out it's flaws. I may find others, but at that point why did you even review it? And that doesn't even address the other issues I brought up. That's not to say I was expecting a response. Just voicing my perspective.

Ethical issues with being known as someone who won't review a product badly? He just did that. Also, doing this proves that anything he does choose to do a real review on is something he genuinely likes, not something he is pretending he likes. Matthias just showed us a product he was sent to review, but refused to do so because it wasn't up to his standard. This way we know anything he shows us is getting a genuine endorsement by him. Matthias is not a review channel, but will review and endorse things that meet his standards, and this is just a case of something that did not, and he shows us why. If anything this increases the amount of respect I have for the guy, and I didn't even think that was possible.

Matthias did the honest review, most of us know the brand anyway and the rest can easily figure out. So this 'protecting' is really more of an symbolic act and I think it leaves clear message. Mentioning the brand could imply that other products from them are of the same quality region, which seemingly isnt true, so I completely understand why Matthias decided this way. Your complaint is far from being reasonable.
@thebeststooge
@thebeststooge 7 жыл бұрын
Krištof Pučejdl No, his complaint is very reasonable because if you are going to do a review you name names and show what is wrong with it or you lose any credibility as a reviewer. By doing what he did it means he doesn't want to hurt the hand that feeds him free stuff so his credibility is in the toilet. I don't know which company it is and a lot of people will not so as a reviewer he sucks and needs to go back to doing his other videos and leave the reviews to the proper people who buy the stuff to review so they are not beholding to anyone and can lay it all out there with names included.

soaringtractor if you're going to use it for rough framing it will get the job done. heck just go look at the lumber you get these days, at least here in central California finding a semi straight 2x is rare. My family has done rough framing since the 60s and my grandpa always swore by old school skilsaws and we had a massive DeWalt radial arm saw from the 50s or 60s.

soaringtractor yeah the new skilsaws are not the same by a long stretch. All of our framers used skilsaws all the time. Like I mentioned before we didn't even have a table saw on site. Skilsaws and Hitachi nail guns were king in those days. I remember when the first paslode gun was delivered by the manufacturer, he brought out a couple prototypes and they didn't last an hour before the tips broke. We went through about 8 or 10 of them before they changed the design. It's really sad what's happened to the tool industry these days, a lot harder to get good lasting tools.

For a saw that is presumably to be used for rough carpentry, I think they actually hit all the right points. Dust collection and cut quality are not as important as usability and safety features for this kind of work. it seems like a very usable saw, the only major problem is the run out, but that hardly matters when you are ripping 2x4s ect. Plus the design overall seems good, and they could probably improve the quality control of this product and it would be just fine.

I work for a high end home builder.. and none of the framers ever have a job site table saw, they only use hand held circular saws... But the finish carpenters have a full size saw that they put in the garage when they are trimming out houses.. I agree. This brand of saw often promotes itself as "professional quality" and charges a price to match. But I've found that most of their tools are several steps below the other leading brands that they try to copy. I'm very happy with my Bosch, and reviews have placed Rigid and the newer DeWalt as just as high. I consider this brand to be "home handyman" only, but won't buy them even for that because of the price they charge.

My problem with jobsight saws that I’ve owned is that you can not get a smooth and precise cut with them. Which, is completely acceptable for making those jobsight type of cuts. But, even if you’re a just a hobbyist but want a smooth cut and don’t need to transport the saw, you are MUCH better off getting a more solid, heavier saw with an induction motor and iron table. In my experience the ONLY thing you get is convenience and mobility out of one of these saws. While you can spend a lot more on a heavier saw, there are some inexpensive and affordable non mobile saws on the market and even with those, to me you can’t even compare the performance to that of a jobsight saw of the same or even more cost. It’s night and day. The problem is that we get sucked into the mobility feature of them and become dead set on wanting one because it’s lighter weight and has wheels. I personally regret that I did as well although on a positive, I got the real world experience from it and now know how inferior their performance is. In many cases you’re better off getting yourself a solid saw with a cast iron top for the home or shop and if you really need a saw on a jobsight, you can get by with a very cheap low quality and lightweight saw as a backup and not get stuck with a mediocre saw for all of your needs. If only they made a jobsight saw that performs closer to a stationary saw for the money. The sawstop costs as much as a very well performing stationary saw and although it is a bit higher in quality, you’re still making the same sacrifices. I’d really like to try the new jobsight Skillsaw though, it seems to be a very good compromise.

It would be nice to know what brand of saw sucks, but you've covered the brand and didn't think it "nice" to be negative when a company gives you something to review. You need to be less sensitive and more business like in these situations. If a company wants you to do an unboxing or review something, your most credible action would be to provide a systematic and repeatable approach, demonstrating to us the performance and rate the results. Don't be such a wimp in these situations, you have no trouble puffing and bragging as well as putting John Heisz's items down. Let's get serious, either accept and provide tool reviews, regardless of results or return items and let them know you don't do that type of video. In this case, you accepted the tool, didn't show us what to avoid (brand) and have the tool, which is the "payment" for your review which is useless since we don't know the brand. So you basically have received compensation for nothing back to the company which sent you an item of value...you win and they're screwed out of a saw. Don't / stop worrying about companies "feelings", they are entities and don't have anthropomorphic anything. They are in business to make a profit, period. If they ask for a review, let us and the company know as you go through your systematic review and your honest opinion (which again, not right or wrong) to provide both us, your subs and revenue generators as well as the company value in the form of an honest review. Your being s professional and honesty is never impeachable!!

It's got nothing to do with "sensitivity" or "wimpiness". You say he should be more business-like but that's exactly what he's doing, he's being professional. A company sponsored him and he's respecting that arrangement so he can continue having a relationship with that company. He doesn't have to do that, but he chose to and that's respectable and entirely his right to do. This wasn't a tool review video like what you're describing. Matthias said that this isn't a paid review. The company gave him the saw, but this isn't a sponsored video nor a video about that particular saw. It's a review of jobsite saws in general. He uses this saw to demonstrate problems with jobsite saws, not the problems with this specific saw. And he does say a lot about the pros and cons of jobsite saws, and when to buy one. You say he "didn't show us what to avoid (brand)" but he did; he explained the various features that are common problems with jobsite saws like this one. And you say that he "accepted the tool...which is the payment for your review" but he didn't; this wasn't a paid review, they just gave him the saw without a requirement to do a review. And that's the crux of it. He chose not to do a specific product review because he didn't want to do a negative review of a sponsor's product -- something he's not obligated to do for his viewers. But he still wanted to take the opportunity to make an educational video for us and so he found a way to do that that he would be comfortable with.

Mathias I have noticed in a lot of your project videos you spread glue on both surfaces of a joint, I'm curious to see if that adds any benefit to the wood. I know you have done test videos of joints in the past do you have one pertaining to this subject?

Do you mean there could be an issue if you squeeze the join too hard (I remember there was a test on this), or that if you let it set for too long before bringing pieces together it wouldn't soak well to the other piece?

I know this is a Maximum (Canadian Tire) saw, but google brings up your video every time I try to find information on King Industrial KC 5100 portable jobsite saw. It also appears that this base model is almost identical to the Ryobi, Ridgid, Skil, Delta Kobalt...I am going insane trying to find a portable saw that I can be a beginner with without the $$$$. I can't spend 2000$ on a saw, and wouldn't pay 800 either, nor do I want to pay for a used one that I have no warranty that it hasn't been abused by the owner...

I have the cheap saw that you said was about $100, and I've built decks and cabinets with it. To be fair I had to sand and polish the arbour completely flat but it wasn't much. As for the pretty easy alignment, but for $15 I cannot complain it's fairly accurate, to be honest.

I think people misunderstand his intentions. He's not naming the brand for fear of missing out on any future perks that he might get. He's not naming the brand because he was nice to consider their dealings before. He's reviewing it because some people asked about it. Every company carries products that don't fit some people. This might be good enough for some people. Doesn't matter whether he got it for free or was paid. As long as he stated what's good what's bad, you just have to take that and decide if you want it or not. Nothing else matters nor is it your business. If this review is not good enough for you, go find another one that will give you enough info to make a decision. He doesn't owe it to anyone to deliver a perfect review.

I really don't think you should hide the company name Matthias. You gave a fair review with not only negatives but also positives. And the saw is clearly aimed for mobile use for the middle price market. And we both know the company that made this aims to between the cheap and the expensive companies so you don't do them a favor because you are hiding their name from their target audiance.

hi, I have that really awful saw so on the left. don't be so mean. But yes it is terrible. The on/ off switch broke immediately, the fence does not lock parallel to the blade so i have to use a square to double check (and the handle broke) and the miter gage is also no good. But it did only cost 100 bucks and I have used it for over 10 years.. so for that price, I got what I expected and it works well enough for home diy projects.

It would prove that they listen to their customers and there is always room for improvement... so do not be afraid of it. just my 1/50th of a dollar...

Alex Your wording is a bit off, do you mean you have the Mastercraft saw shown here? It does seem old-manish to say "things were better in my day", but when it comes to tools it can't really be refuted that they were built sturdier and to last longer. My Ridgid saw is less than 10 years old and the model has great reviews, the newer version looks almost identical but has mixed (including very poor) reviews, there's no doubt that the quality is decreasing even within a few years.

This is a really interesting and useful (and I *hope* ultimately correct) way of approaching this situation. I see the inherent tension experienced by full-time making/building/educational KZbinrs of your variety. On the one hand, you've built your audience - in part - through an earned reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. On the other hand, *you do this for a living*, trying to earn a reliable middle class income thorough this alone, and paid sponsorships and product placements and reviews can have a legitimate and necessary place in securing that. So I understand you not wanting to jeopardize that. So this strikes a good balance: you were appropriately critical of a sub-par product, without being savage about it. You didn't name them, so nobody can say "Matthias slagged [Brand]". But any of your viewers who are in that market and who care will know exactly what brand this is, or at least will know what things to look for and what trade-offs they're making, so it's just as useful. And if it turns out this pisses the company off, then I don't think they've thought about this very hard: this is a job site saw, and as it turns out, an uninspiringly typical one. You're not a contractor or job site worker. You're known for engineering-level precision in your work. So that's predictably going to set your expectations. Why would they think you're going to be an enthusiastic reviewer of this particular piece of equipment?

As a longtime viewer, I'm uncomfortable with the ethical issues raised by this review. Matthias' motivation for hiding the name of the manufacturer clearly underscores that he has a conflict of interest, and is resolving that conflict by being less than forthcoming. Yes, he faithfully pointed out all the flaws, and that's good. But he also refused to attach those flaws to the brand because they've paid him for videos in the past. That's a clear conflict of interest. The right thing to do would be to refuse to review the saw, or to review it with the name attached. Straddling the line between those two positions does a disservice to the viewers.
@MadebyJester
@MadebyJester 7 жыл бұрын
A) Matthias went out of his way to obscure the brand, and made a point of telling us that he was doing so because he had a prior business relationship with the company. That's a conflict of interest. B) I didn't see the places where the brand name was visible. And I'm not likely to go watch again just for the satisfaction of knowing. I don't care who makes it, I care that Matthias isn't being entirely ethical. C) Calling people stupid for highlighting ethical concerns says more about you than it does about me.

Parts isn't too flimsy if it made of proper alloys. And i don't really care about fewer bearings, since it works decently for years and doesn't break out of the blue unlike most other tools. Really, i've seen 2000W skilsaws with nylon gears. That IS flimsy.

Festool have a very "toxic" fanclub. Just look how they overreacted when AvE did his review of their saw. And they are a little bit overpriced but if there are people willing to pay for it then so be it. Btw there is nothing wrong with using bronze bushing instead of a bearing in certain applications. In fact i bought a second hand AEG circular saw that was made over 20 years ago in germany. Bronze bushing and after all those years there is no problem with alignment or wobbling shaft(actually you can't move blade side to side without bending it, nice for a 25 US $ buy).
