This video is a play-through of the bassline from Jocelyn Brown's 1984 hit song 'Somebody Else's Guy'. This song features a fantastic bass part, which is performed using a combination of fingerstyle and slap techniques. It's got a great feel and is a lot of fun to play.

I'm a metal guitarist BUT grew up in NYC my entire life and grew up with all these funk songs in the 1980s. I'm literally thinking of getting a Fodera Imperial, just to get into funk/ groove. Funny enough, I spent 30 years as a professional photographer and my very first commercial client was Fodera, since I grew up a few blocks from their 3rd avenue factory. All the photos from Fodera's very first website were taken by me!! Vinnie and Joe L were always amazing! During the film days, Vinnie would drop off film at CostCo a few blocks away, and that's where I met him and offered my services, since I had moved into digital with the Nikon D1 in 2000. : )

Hi Stuart, I'm not actually commenting on THIS post (even tho it is stunning) Just wanted to say thank you for all the BASS LICKS OF THE WEEK. As an oldie beginner I'm making my way thorough them (plectrum only). Your lessons are superb, and really pushed my playing to new heights. Thank you mate 👍

Sounds great. The slap and pluck is on point. I play with a pick, so I get a similar slap sound by hammering down on a string with the pick, and instead of plucking with my fingers, I get the pick under the string and pluck upwards. I'm diabetic and have to prick my finger tips several times a day to check glucose levels, and so I either play with a pick, or don't play at all because my fingers are way too sore.
