"Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment." So wild to hear my father's oftquoted phrase in Jocko's rumbling voice... Thank you for that. I can feel him smiling from the other side. I needed that today.

It does seem to be on the first hand BUT if you look deeper under the surface of his statements, he really does have the gift of simplifying the things (through movies - his passion) Jocko talks about, which some "normal" folks couldnt comprehend. Apart from that it amuses me A LOT and always bring a smile on my face during my commuting!

In fact I was just listening to an earlier Jocko Podcast were they are going on about giving their past selves good advice, it span off of 'if I knew then what I know now and Jocko observed that he had the option to know because the books and the experienced people were right there. Or something like that. It's when they are going through one of the USMC manuals. It might actually have been Ep. 81 and the serve to lead book.

I think what Echo is trying to say with mature, is that there are traits that we associate at being older/mature, and being able to articulate yourself properly is one. Jocko is exceptional at bringing ideas to proper and simple words that can be understood. There are other traits also but you can simplify them to a single word leader.

20:50 - I think that "projecting success/confidence" is essential in leadership. You don't do it to fool other people (although people will take you more seriously), you do it for yourself. It's like JBP told us to walk upright with your shoulders back. Again, it's a balancing act. Get to equilibrium.
@AngryOscillator
@AngryOscillator 4 жыл бұрын
How about just be successful and confident? To achieve either or both, you work hard. Simple as that and as hard as you choose to make it. The harder, the better. (within reason) Walking with your shoulders back is a matter of personal pride and respect. Its about being mindful of little things and choosing to hold them with good grace and composure.

My Goal: to run my first 25k trail race this October. My plan: to run my ass off for the next 16 weeks; 5k runs 3-4 days per week, plus a 12-16k run 1-2 times per week for 4-6 weeks. Then build up to the point where i can run 16k 3 days per week plus 1 long run (20+ km) per week, and keep it at that for the next 8-10 weeks before race day and work on my proficiency. And then go ruin the trails on race day! I want to finish in the top 10 for my distance.

Hey Jocko or Comment Section, Been watching Jockos Podcast for a couple days, and it’s really encouraged me to stay determined and continue to execute my everyday positive habits such as working out, reading, meditation and etc. Getting after it, I’ve graduated high school in 2016 and never really found what I truly wanted to do it is now 2020 and most of my fellow high school classmates have graduated from college. Leaving me behind and having regrets of not fully getting after college I’m going back in the fall and plan on absolutely crushing it. However I still feel really bad on not getting after it upon the completion of high school any advice when going back. Probably a minor issue to many just wanted some thoughts. Keep getting after it! I’m 21 years old

Hello friend. When I graduated high school, I too did not know what I wanted to do in life. I got into college studying as Medical Laboratories Technologist. Even when I finished that, I still felt it wasn't what I wanted in life. At age 33 I finished college yet again on a different subject, this time Radiology Technologist. So, my personal advice is, just keep trying things out and see what you like. I know people push to "get their shit together" until X years old. You don't have to. Nobody has to. Just keep trying stuff and once you find something you like, BOOM, go beast mode on it. Cheers from Greece!

Not sure if I agree with the operating on lack of sleep is fine. Studies have proven over and over performance is affected not to mention the negative health effects on ones body. Being tired while on stage at a muster has no fatal consequences for mistakes. I'm not going to consistently show up to fly an aircraft load of passengers or on a mission while I'm sleep deprived. Sure, I might get away with it for years (same as a complacent attitude) but there might be one day when I need that extra mental clarity to help make a good decision to get me out of a tough situation. If i get myself killed thats on me. If I get others killed thats not right. It's my responsibility to show up stacked with every advantage I have to "win" every day. I can't hope that adrenaline will get me out of a tight spot on a daily basis. Matter of fact I would rather not have adrenaline involved to any great degree. It's easier to remain calm and "detach" without adrenaline. Sometimes it's not possible to show up well rested and I get that. But I think I owe it to others to be at the top of my game when lives are at risk so I make the attempt. Just my opinion based on 30 years of flying including a few in Iraq and Afghanistan. Awesome podcast. I wish I could have gotten all this info "back in the day"!

i stopped watching bc he keeps apologizing for wierd crap and I don't like that. too ambiguous in way too many places. its like he keeps getting stuff backwards. the logic is kinda loopy too. no, just no. i could kinda tolerate that kind of stuff when it wasn't about actual war topics and events. Like with some of the Peterson stuff. But in war context and stories I just can't take it. The impulse to use a very high degree of sarcasm is too great. or to edit it. Basically, i think im allergic to the ambiguity. I'm here cuz of the TedTalk. It wasn't ambiguous. I was 100% excited about the concept of "the thread", but after listening my ears were in "knots", haha. Its like when you're super excited to eat candy and then you try it and realise....you're super allergic to this particular brand. I usually don't do a full 180 but in this case....full 180.
