@@threethrushes Sometimes we only see what we want to see...Jocko seemed conflicted at the end as Herbert did not follow jockos philosophy of leadership yet he still was on the right side of morals and the rules of war. The lesson i got was that Franklin was just building relationships and Herbert did not accept the wrongs he saw in the war so he could obviously not build relationships with those wrongs and the people who accepted them. And the reason the vietnam war got so out of hand morally and legally should be CRYSTAL clear: Too many Franklins and too few Herberts.That is a lesson you can take with you in every aspect of life not just war. When faced with unrighteousness there are only two paths , no middle path because that path will always end up at the bottom of a slippery slope.Even if your intentions for taking the middle path were good. As a wise man once said : You can not serve 2 masters, chose one. Righteousness or everything else.
@threethrushes3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDoe-yu2xw I was disappointed that Jocko didn't seem to reflect on the summation of Herbert's experience, and then get EC to go into a bloody advertisement for his supplement. Is that where we are? An ex-Navy SEAL commander really hawking a product on the back of Herbert's story? It was clear that Herbert had a very clear moral code, and that he was facing bad actors. To say that a man of Herbert's calibre would not know the importance of 'building relationships' is insulting his intelligence. Plus ca change.
@JohnDoe-yu2xw3 жыл бұрын
@@threethrushes As i see it Jocko was faced with an uncomfortable truth after reading this book : That the system and the war itself was morally corrupt all the way to the top.. The take then was that herbert did not build enough relationships and if he just did build a few more he would have some sort of victory in the end by the position of influence and relationships he buildt.The problem is that no matter how many relationships herbert would have buildt and how good of a leader and soldier he was the system and war would still be the same. This is an uncomfortable truth specially when the same system (us military/government) are the ones who made you and is or atleast was..your employer. Being faced with such a truth will make you conflicted and that will often result in resorting back to the lowest common denominator : your training/leadership philosophy = If only Herbert buildt more relationships he would "win" in the end.Obviously herbert still won no matter what the courts said because he did not sacrifice his morals to become a franklin type character. Thats my take. And the selling of products i have no issue with it , you can just skip that part if you want.

I think part of the reason why that’s changed since then is because of the widespread destruction that laid waste after WW2 from all the fighting.
