In SAC (Strategic Air Command), we had a saying. 'Reward for a job well done was minimal punishment'. I could tell you some stories. My second Aircraft Commander, when he was a copilot, was brought up on charges of munity for rightfully following three engine takeoff data on a training mission and was told he could face the death penalty. True friggin story. The ridiculous case was dismissed, after he and the navigator, also brought up on same charges, hired a civilian lawyer. The AC was an Academy graduate. Both were outstanding officers and operators. Both separated after their first term of service was complete.

@jocko - would love you to expand on the “Competitive being good” thing more. As someone who was highly competitive myself - i know first hand it comes with a lot of costs. Ego, can’t accept criticism, Needing to win every argument, constantly comparing yourself to those around you (trying to look good relatively rather than focus on your own performance), setting up everything into a competition often at the expense of relationships. Competitiveness is masking a need for security - I need to ‘stand out and be seen’, people’s self worth rides on winning or losing. Ultimately it’s an external driver - a need to impress others and therefore they have control over you. Instead of Competitive Lets think in Achievement terms: a focus on my own performance excellence, achieving self set standards (rather than a relative ‘competitive’ one), focusing on the long term objective and breaking it down into steps rather than a just a short term focus. A focus on performing the process well rather than exclusively on the outcome. If we do these things well then we will get the results - we’ll win in competitive situations but that isn’t what drives us. Maybe this is what you are saying when you say “competitive is good” because I know you also wrote an entire chapter on “check your ego”. But Would be really interested for you to go further into the topic of having a “competitive mindset” vs an “Achievement” mindset as described above.

Its strange how in the age of melee combat from the Paleolithic onward to the 1600s, male fighters had long hair. Yet in the age of kinetic weapons and distance fighting short hair became prominent. The first instance of cutting hair in a military was in Alexander's army when they had the Macedonian men (who came from loosely related hill tribes) all cut their hair down to the same length, the reason being to give them a sense of uniformity.

I mean much like any major academic, he was right and wrong about a whole schlew of things. Outsider looking in... But just like the Spartans didn't know how to use corps or machine guns, when you're earlier to the game you make more mistakes. Like you said earlier, we tend to want to promote the generals who made no errors than the successful ones who made errors. But this doesn't accommodate that errors are part of a move towards academic knowledge just as they are part of the movement towards military success. Blanket assuming everything Freud said was wrong will lump what he was right about into the wrong category. Besides that, *many* medical and legal professionals do cocain. Hell: "Nearly 36% of physicians enrolled in physician health programs suffer from opioid abuse." According to other sources, substance abuse problems among doctors and nurses account for the highest workforce addiction rates.
